Unboxing of the new Lenovo ThinkPad T470 with one terabyte NVM-e PCI-E solid state drive and 32 gigabytes of RAM. Comparison in size with the Lenovo t450s.
Did you get it in Yuiun? Can you provide some insight? I heard lots of conflicting reports about an adapter being needed to use a PCIe NVME SSD if someone orders with a 500GB HDD with intention to replace ourselves.
I got it from the Lenovo official website. I ordered the regular SSD version (not the nvme one). What I heard is that the original port is for HDD, and they add an adapter for SSD. I would recommend the regular SSD version and replace it with nvme SSD in the future if necessary. The intel 180GB SSD hard disk works pretty well and I doubt how much faster the NVME one would be considering the huge amount of money you need to pay for the upgrade.
Thanks so much for the review - especially for comparing the T470 against the T450s! I have the T450s and the T470p, but am thinking about picking up a second-hand T470 (they're so cheap now!). I'd love to get my hands on a T480, but the price is way to high for me at the moment - I'll wait until the second-hand T480's hit the market. BTW - I run Linux on a T450s, and it's still awesome. I haven't had any issues with speed or performance for what I use it for. I have noticed it kind of struggles when I try to screen-record 1080p at 60fps, but it still manages to get the job done. The only reason why I'm going to purchase a T470 is for the Thunderbolt port - I want to use an eGPU. I know the T470's Thunderbolt 3 port is only wired up to 2 PCIe lanes, meaning max throughput is something like 16Gb/s, but that's okay with me (I'll mostly be doing CUDA stuff, so I'm not too worried about driving multiple 4K displays). Anyway, thanks again for the review - I'm a huge ThinkPad fan.
I just ordered a T470, I like that it''s easy to upgrade. Mine is shipping with just 8GB of RAM, I plan to upgrade it to 16 GB so I'm really hoping that it arrives with one 8 GB stick rather than having both RAM slots filled with a 4GB.
I am glad they changed the finish on the lid, and the plastic on the palmrest . If they would put the old hinges and the keyboard with the blue enter back like it was on t420, this would be the best laptop.
The internal 'non removable' battery is actually user replaceable in that it isn't soldered in. So since you can open the laptop (with some pain :-) ), you can replace that battery when it goes EOL. Unlike a Macbook!
I was looking for a good comparision laptop for my X270 and find this video on the T470. And as always after wacthing video's im reading the comments. And found out he already past away? It's hard to believe. May God bless his soul.
I used to buy sell laptops so ive had a few shall we say and hand on heart this machine is exactly what i needed i do lot of video work and it handles everything no lagging great battery as well i carnt fault it really need to be recommended to you out there if your thinking of a new laptop lenovo thinkpads all the way!
I had a T410s previously and it held up well but it had limited storage options and poor battery performance. Just grabbed a T440p, upgraded to a backlit keyboard and SSD. Super easy to work on. Doing a trackpad or palmrest swap looks a little more difficult but not impossible.
this may have been posted already but your shutdown startup test was with the windows 10 quick start feature enabled (which is on by default). it did not shut down completely (it is basically hibernation). you can see that by the power led blinking before going off. I turn this setting off as I often boot to Linux os via USB and or dual boot. pcie in this laptop makes a difference but it cannot fully utilize the latest m.2 drives as it only has 2 lanes. still a great laptop either way.
Just purchased the T470 this week, runs very will with only 8GB of memory but have already purchased an additional 16GB taking the memory to 24GB. Let me know how this system performed for you overall. Thanks
As your video is the only source to get to know more about t470, would request you to post another video to show all ports, internals such as where to insert sim card , performance , thunderbold port and any other details which would help people willing to buy this one. So far lenovo site has the HD display option. Not sure which one you have. If you post the video that covers display quality etc.. would be a great help. thank you.
Sudarshan sridhar All the ports can be viewed on the Lenovo website. They have lots of high resolution photos that show all of the port locations, which is why I didn't bother showing them on the video. This is the 1080p Full HD IPS screen. It is very similar to the Full HD screen that I had on the T450s. If screen quality is really important to you, you may want to wait for the higher resolution screen with better color accuracy that will be available with the T470s.
I am confused between X1 carbon and T470. I have used T460 and loved the keyboard. Not sure if X1 carbon has same key depth or response. please suggest
It's sad to see you struggling to open the laptop just to replace minor parts. It seems that Lenovo is trashing the good old "form following function" design of ThinkPads and is trying to become more like Apple. Less user-friendly, thinner and lighter design by compromising many classic features, etc. ThinkPads were the favorite of many people because they were easy to deal with, but unfortunately Lenovo is making newer ThinkPads less appealing to those people. We should have realized what was going on when ThinkPads started to have 16:9 screens and 6-row chicklet keyboards.
Is it really thinner? Have you noticed that rubber stands on the bottom has been redesigned? If you want to compare sizes of these two, please lay them upside down.
I would like to thank you for time and dedication you took in answering all the relevant questions. I couldn't make up my mind what to get between the Dell XPS 15 9560 , T407 and the T407P Still confused though-They seem so similar
Bear in mind, there is no power on light on the brick, no HD activity light, no WiFi hard switch, and hard insert/remove SD card, no latch on the lid, no finger indent on lid, and hard to read F keys.... Opening case, will guarantee breakage of plastic tabs.... all form over function.
I've never bought a new Thinkpad lol, always used after 3-4 years. Currently I'm rocking a T450, bought it a week ago, it came with the shitty TN 768p panel but I've got a IPS 1080p upgrade coming in the mail.
Thanks For the Video. I am going to purchase T470 Model: 20HEA02EIG (India) One thing I would like to Know about This laptop is Does this have WWAN port? So I can upgrade Second Hard Disk ( SSD )
Hey - How do you feel about the screen quality? This laptop seems 99% perfect for me but I'm worried about how good the screen would be? I would've loved the 1440p option but it doesn't allow you to choose it with the T470. I program on a 27 inch 1440p screen at the moment and I think I may have become "used" to it.
I am ready to buy this except that I hear the screen is very dim on this model. It reportedly only has 230 nits. What has been your experience with it? I will be doing some graphic design and video editing but most of all, coding.
What is the cable with the AC adapter to the left of the laptop for? And what cable are you using for power? I have a used T-470 and a dock.and the dock is powered by a USB cable plugged in the back that has a AC adapter like the one in your video I was asking about. I also have another power cable with AC adapter also that has a USB-C at the other end that I use when I take the laptop somewhere. There is a port on the left side towards the rear marked with a power symbol. Do you have a cable for that one? I did not get a cable for that one.
RIP to Robert Yale. The bottom cover design for the T470 looks horrible. I saw our IT guy completely mangle the clips after mine spontaneously died to get into the inside. Almost every video I have seen, people break the clips, then the bottom cover never seats properly. My old company dell e6440 laptop had 2 screws and bang you were inside. My mother's company HP just had one screw to take off the bottom cover off.
I was set on getting a Dell Precision 13 but after seeing this I'm in 2 minds now. I'm after a business laptop with touchscreen and long battery life. Is the processor Kaby Lake and is the battery hot swappable?
Thank you for the video. I am having a T420, the last one before they came up with chiclets keyboard and p,s versions. Guess there is no type C isn't? Could you please 1) post the link you bought the RAM from 2) also the link where I can buy the exact screw driver. I see that T4X0s wondering whats the difference between a T460 and T460p.
Nice video. Thank you. :) I just got my T470 with 4 GB of RAM and intend to add 8 GB. Could you please provide a link for a compatible RAMam? Either Crucial or Samsung? Also, will I be able to make use of dual channel with this 4 GB + 8 GB setup? Or do I have to have 8 GB + 8 GB? Thanks again.
MrDreamie I don't have the T430s anymore, but I can tell you that the T450s is smaller than the T430s on every dimension, so the T470 is noticeably smaller compared to the T430s.
Hi, thanks for awesome review! )) Could anybody tell me, does touchpad has such good work with gestures as dell xps 13/15 (9350/60, 9550/60) ? Course Thinkpad t560 has poor work with touchpad gestures in comparison with dell xps. Thanks a lot!
So I tried T450s and T460s and I hated the touchpad. Such a deal breaker for me! Also the battery life on the T460s was around 3h for me. I have a T420 right now which I'm quite happy with except the weight. The touchpad is much better than the 450s and 460s. I'm not sure how can such a thing happen. Is the touchpad different on this one ?
How is the heat dissipation (excess heat, fan noise, etc) and battery life on the i7 variant? I'm currently on the fence between an i7 and i5 in this laptop, but I've heard i7s in portables sometimes have issues with thermal throttling and battery life.
Cutty Fred Haven't seen any thermal throttling yet, even when doing processor intensive workloads... The fan does speed up and get noticeably louder under load, but it seems to keep it cool enough.
I think you should turn on the computer, enter the BIOS and shut down the internal battery... or when you open the bottom of the machine, manually disconnect the internal battery from the motherboard. Otherwise you may damage the computer...
sure, but the slim model surely should be the one to have features missing, in order to achieve its thinner form factor. As I understood it the non-slim is basically the one that should have more feature options at the expensive of a little thicker form I'm upgrading from a t440s and only just discovering how lenovo have been changing things in the past few years, my main concern is not getting the swappable battery at the rear like i can in my 440s. For that reason i will probably be forced to get the 470 over the 470s. But I would really like the 1440p screen. The 470s not only has a lack of power delivery due to relying on the lower capacity in built battery, but it has the more power hungry screen too... The 470s is also the one with thunderbolt port! They should really simplify their line up, and surely all of the features on the 'slim' version should be available on the non slim version, at the very least
the T470 does have Thunderbolt 3. It's the T470P version that doesn't, which is some really mind puzling stuff considering it is the "workstation" of the 14" thinkpads.
What made you buy the Thinkpad when the Dell XPS 15 provides similar specs, and build quality, with a much better screen, battery and an much more powerful graphics card ?
Nachiket Vartak the XPS is a much larger computer. I have no desire to lug around a 15.6" screen laptop. And I have yet to find a Dell (business series or otherwise) that has a build quality that comes anywhere near that of Lenovo.
Thanks for your reply. Though you might be surprised that the thin bezels on the Dell XPS make it only about 1 inch wider than that T450S. The weight difference is 200g. the XPS series is aluminium + carbon fibre, compared to Lenovo's magnesium-aluminium alloy. Build quality is on par. I suppose I am a little disappointed that as a Thinkpad user, the performance upgrade options Lenovo offered in late 2016-early 2017 were devastatingly mediocre. I mean, Intel Graphics 620, 46 Wh battery, last generation dedicated low end GPU (if at all) for a 2100 € laptop. Poor show.
I've tried typing on XPS 13 keyboard at a shop but it was frustrating. Especially the arrow keys are cramped. I suppose XPS 15 has the same sort of keyboard. The only thing I dislike about the thinkpad keyboard is that the position of Fn key is where the CTRL key should be...
syaosakucouple used it for almost 7 hours on battery today, doing mostly Office type work, with WiFi and bright screen. this has the Intel HD Graphics.
If anyone can help me on this question much would be appreciated. What is the screen like on the HD option 1920x1080? what could I use to reference the quality from in terms of another laptop? The computer stores around me do not sell the thinkpad series.
Can you drive 2 external monitors simultaneously? e.g. 1x 1080p and other ultra wide 21:9. Resolution, 2560 x 1080? Do you know if 2 external monitors are supported by video card or is more like DisplayLink technology?
Bartek Sońta With the new Intel 620 integrated graphics, it can drive dual 4K monitors (3840x2160) via display port if you use the ultra docking station. I currently am running dual QHD screens (2560x1440), and it works beautifully. I just ordered two 32" 4K monitors, and will update you on how that goes. In any case, this will run the monitor resolutions you are interested in with no problems over either HDMI or DisplayPort.
ThinkPads work extremely well with Linux by and large. This particular one is Ubuntu and RHL certified... certification.ubuntu.com/hardware/201702-25371/ support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd104608
ishmail matake I use a friend's IBM employee purchase program login to get EPP pricing. this system as configured (1080p screen, 1TB PCI-E SSD, 16GB RAM, fingerprint reader, Windows 10 Pro Signature edition, backlit keyboard, Intel wireless, etc.) was just under $1500 USD. I added on the 3 year warranty + accidental damage protection, the ThinkPad Ultra dock, and an extra power cable and the entire purchase price was just over $1950.
Eric Mark Very solid on both sides. No noticeable give on either when placed on a hard, flat surface. A little give on the left side when docked in the Thinkpad Ultra docking station, but that is from the dock, not the computer.
Alex E You can put a standard HDD in the main HD caddy, and a small SSD in the m.2 slot. But you cannot use a PCI-E SSD and a 2.5 inch HDD at the same time.
Oh I get how it works now (sorry I'm new to this). Is it ok to mix memories? I bought mine with 4GB can I buy an additional 8GB for a total of 12GB or am I stuck with only adding another 4GB?
You can add 8GB in the second slot but that means you cannot use "dual-channel configuration". It requires two modules of the same size and has a significant impact on the iGPU performance (20-30%). 8+8 is a good choice and an upgrade will be still cheaper comparing to the Lenovo website.
Around the 12 min mark you _could_ use the Speed feature in your NLE to speed up the video...otherwise it's like watching toast brown or a kettle boil...Boring. I've got a 12 yr. old T61 that still works great. Just needs a new hard drive (have had a 160 Gig WD in it sinc 2013) and maybe more RAM.
Thank you for clarifying. Does "internal mobile broadband" option is sufficient to use 4G LTE/ 3G internationally (for me its in India) or do we need to buy the other option qualcom which adds up extra $130?
brianyjkim They are pretty similar to the past T-series speakers. They are fine for casual listening, RU-vid videos, etc., but if you want to listen to music or watch movies, you'll want headphones or a set of powered speakers.
