Lenticels permit the exchange of gases between the environment and the internal tissue spaces of the organism. This quince tree had its roots in water for almost 6 weeks because of the lenticels ability to exchange gasses through the trunk the tree did not die while submerged. In fact, it has grown a feeder root system that will kick in as soon as the tree is planted back into the earth.
