In 2008, a historic event took place: The New York Philharmonic, under the baton of acclaimed conductor Lorin Maazel (1930-2014) traveled to Pyongyang, North Korea to perform a concert at East Pyongyang Grand Theatre. It was the first time since the Korean War that significant US-American cultural representatives were permitted to visit the secluded country. This event captures a historic moment in which music found itself navigating sensitive political realities, and revealed its unique power - the power to awaken human minds and to push for change by creating moments of communication, unity, and hope.
The New York Philharmonic began the concert by performing the national anthems of North Korea and the United States, followed by a program that introduced the audience to European and US-American classics (such as Richard Wagner, George Bizet or Leonard Bernstein), and created moments of symbolic meaning: After performing pieces such as Antonín Dvořák's Symphony "From the New World" and George Gershwin's "An American in Paris", the orchestra closed the concert with the famous Korean folk song "Arirang", which is beloved in both, South and North Korea.
Directed by Michael Beyer
Produced by Paul Smaczny
2008, EuroArts Music, in coproduction with Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation, ARTE France, Thirteen/WNET New York, in association with New York Philharmonic

I remember hearing this live over the radio. But seeing it, the whole orchestra playing with the podium empty ... it's deeply touching. Lenny Lives! I hope the orchestra truly feels the affection that Loein Maazel says they do.

1:42 starts Also the best recording of this Overture. Kind of funny to think this is in North Kora.

Agreed. I've heard it performed multiple times per different ensembles and conductors, but for me this has the absolute best version of the horn section doing the counter melody after the solo is shared between the principal and co principal players. The section absolutely soars in this!

I love Lenny, I love Lorin. I prayed that their music might inspire more than it did in North Korea. But after a few minutes of reflection, I realized there is no force of art and beauty on earth capable of penetrating all the walls and bullets and bombs that keep in and keep out our fellow humans from where they want to go/need to go/SHOULD go, for the sake of the human race.
