Leonard Cohen Interview (1980): CBC 'Authors' with Patrick Watson

Extensive interview by Patrick Watson, broadcast on CBC february 8th 1980 in the show 'Authors'. With poem readings of Death of a Lady's Man. Leonard talking about drugs, writing, marriage and many other things.
I've reconstructed the interview by using two sources compromising between the best quality and the completeness of the interview. This explains the differences in quality of certain passages.
"It's too late to change my name and it's too late for suicide"

Leonard here and Leonard at the last two decades are drastic… it shows in his speaking and in his eyes and softening of his face. I’m so happy to know he found peace in the end. LC in London in 2008-2009 was such a treasure. Austin City Limits was another great small concert. ❤🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻❤️

“I don’t want to move around much anymore - but that’s because I want to try something big, and I need stable surroundings to be able to really take flight.” That's hard won artistic experience there. It's take me 25 years for me to realise that myself.

It's always a pleasure to listen to Leonard's soothing voice..discussing such deep matters whilst holding a somewhat calming demeanour. It almost makes you feel reassured in a sense, hearing somebody talk so simply about things but staying poetically meaningful as well. It sustains the authenticity of honest emotion. It was his mother tongue after all. Thank you for uploading this rare treasure.

“Events rush in too quickly for me to have a program about it” ~ LC was a person who slowly over time became more open to many aspects of what life had to offer. I believe that he had no artistic program to follow but rather developed his own groove in response to the life he had personally experienced.

Interviewer was spot on, listening an staying with Leonard. Thoughtful with the answers he got. Excellent camerawork bringing it all together in soft cohesiveness. Like very much the interviewers smiles about his subject showing how he liked his man. The cigarette holder is fun. Hadnt known he was such a cute guy back in the day. Do remember well listening to his early stuff in the wonderous 60s while at UC Berkeley reveling in all of what we had then.

Oh! I so enjoyed listening to this conversation. It’s like we get a glimpse into Leonard’s mind heart & soul - why he fashions his lyrics and poems the way he does. And to be able to get really lost in his eyes! Yes! Thank you so much for this upload! ❤❤❤

What a wonderful conversation! Patrick Watson is a contemporary of Leonard's, and a writer, actor, and more himself. He asks penetrating questions, LISTENS to Leonard's responses, and obviously appreciates Leonard's work. Very enlightening! Leonard might have said "true." Thank you, ALBIAS, for finding this and sharing it with us!

Leonard appears more remote, intense, unsure, and self protective here than in his late in life interviews where he appears humourous, more self accepting and content. Im glad he was more comfortable in his skin as he aged. Perhaps he used less drugs and alcohol later in life.

The ongoing lawsuit battle of overcoming that sin to win freedom from it's capturing oppressions. The suit of cards one is dealt and are holding from the drawn cards of life. The pursuit of happiness one has drawn believing they are free. It can mean many things other than Armani or Sears Sucker. ~Just another one of those many ones of we who's awaiting...
