I thought of this song today after reading about the heroic Ukrainian resistance, and their willingness to risk their lives for freedom and democracy. Basically what Cohen sings about in this cover of the "Lament of the French Partisan." The Ukrainians in most cities and town have not had to go underground yet, but some already have had to. And when the soldiers came across the border, almost no one surrendered.
Which resistance and democracy? Stop listening to CNN and CNBC. Ukraine is a fucked up place. Democracy where you have only a government owned TV station?
It's a French song written during WW-II by Partisans (French Résistance) composed by Anna Marly who was of Russian origin, lyrics by French Resistant Leader Emmanuel d'Astier de la Vigerie, this song was later translated (very close to the original text) by Leonard Cohen. Very good session, here. Hats up. Have a nice day.
Leonard Cohen was a genius and the Poet Laureate of Canada. He spoke multiple languages, and both sang and composed poetry. He is passed now. His brilliance will be missed by all freedom loving people!
It's a song written by French Resistance in WW-II. Musical theme by Anna Marly (Russian-born), lyrics by Resistance Leader Emmanuel d'Astier de la Vigerie. Have a nice day.
@@danicoal The addition of that wonderful string work adds a historically vital Eastern European element to the performance -- I'm speaking of the balalaika-like instrument used in mid-song solo (sorry I'm unsure of its name, sorrier still I do not know the musician's identity).

The instrument is not a banjo,I believe it is a Lute to the person asking who is that on the banjo.Who it is I don't know but he has a great gypsy style of play.
