She didn't fail. She did the best she could give who she is. Leonard finally understood that he needs to accept her for who she is, rather than expect her to be something she's not. Most people never reach that realization and their relationship with their parents remains stuck. Those that accept their parents as humans full of flaws are rewarded with a mature relationship that can finally grow.

@@OneEyedJack01She failed as a mother to Leonard because irrespective of how peculiar she was, she showed that she could do better . Look at how she is with Sheldon and even penny. Leonard has also talked about how she favoured her other kids over him. She just never cared for Leonard because she considered him to be mediocre. So, yea she did in fact fail horribly, she could have done more but she didn't care enough to do so.

It doesn’t justify any of her actions and behavior towards her son and family, but Beverly is essentially a further set in her ways version of Sheldon or what Sheldon could’ve become if he hadn’t met and then started having more people that he would eventually call his friends and family come into his life. And this is just my speculation here, but since she’s a worse version of Sheldon, then I don’t think it’s too far a stretch to think that she truly isn’t aware of the impact of her actions outside of the ones that she intentionally does to cause harm or discomfort or disrespect… She’s emotionally and socially… Immature? Compromised? Ignorant? Basically, she doesn’t see or understand why others react - in this case Leonard - the way they do to her actions when they aren’t done with a negative intention. It reminds me a little bit of when Sheldon ended up offending Dr. Emily and apologized to her on the party bus to Vegas. Again, it doesn’t justify the things that she’s done because she has purposely done shitty things without caring or taking into consideration the long term affects, thoughts and feelings of others - Leonard’s many tales of all the “heartwarming memories” from his childhood growing up in the Hofstadter home in Jersey is plenty of evidence along with her visits to Pasadena… It would be too easy to just call her an evil person or just a bitch, but I think more than anything she’s just a deeply flawed individual who wants to “connect” but doesn’t know how. It certainly would explain her reaction to all of this and why it felt good for her son to forgive her… And why she almost timidly hugged him.

I can't help but think there was a moment before this, possibly *years* ago, when she had a moment of clarity for how her actions affected Leonard but simultaneously realised that no matter what she did *now* it wouldn't erase the past, so she just accepted that their relationship was irrevocably broken and it was on her and she didn't have the emotional capacity to fix/make up for it. She never thought she could be forgiven so him *actually* forgiving her was both unexpected and a relief that she probably never expected to happen anywhere but her deathbed. Or maybe I'm giving her too much credit, who knows.

So well-acted, very moving scene. I always identified with Leonard a tiny bit in his difficult relationship with his mother. My dear mom was not really very much like Beverly, but she *was* blunt and abrupt and impatient. With 5 kids, me being the youngest, I get that… but my tender sensitivity was always a little shattered by it. She loved us fiercely but wasn’t demonstrative with it. I did totally forgive her for any unintended hurts (and they were ALL unintended - she did everything that she did out of the best, selfless reasons, truly). I never told her that because I think that would’ve hurt her greatly to know I was hurt by anything she did or didn’t do.

Keeping scoreboards and thinking it is necessary to "even the score" will never build a healthy relationship. You forgive, accept, and move on, or you end the relationship. @srntnjl523
@srntnjl523 28 дней назад
What I can see in this scene is that Leonard did the "forgiving" more for himself than for his mother. Sometimes it's better to just let go of something than to stubbornly cling hard on to it despite not getting what you want. Do note that part of why Leonard has issues in himself is that he is trying very hard to gain Beverly's approval even when it doesn't seem that she will give it to him. The relief Leonard felt when he chose to "forgive" her than to call her out for everything that made her a failure of a mother is proof of that. Leonard realized that from that point on, he doesn't need to gain his mother's approval in order to complete himself. That there is emotional maturity. Some people may not like how he addressed the Beverly issue, but it is a valid way to do so nevertheless.

COME ON how is this not a retcon? the writers should've owned up and said 'pretend the scene with penny never happened and now we're doing a new thing' Sheldon even had that catholic confession thing w/ Tam over something not as big as adultery. And you think Sheldon would keep quiet over adultery??!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA the writers should rewrite that scene with sheldon & penny. What they could've done is say 'hey we changed our minds. Actually it makes more sense Sheldon's dad isn't a neglectful drunk. Sheldon's dad's support is a big part of why Sheldon is so successful. We'll rewrite TBBT scenes later. Bear with us please.' I’ve always been under the impression that the authors wanted us to believe that Beverly loved her son, despite her countless Flaws as a mother. And there was some kind of development in that regard, like when she was so happy to see him getting married and approved Penny because she could see how the girl Made him happy. But they should have handled the ending better, it was way too rushed and that woman took a huge step back with that experiment shit. What a shame. In the end I still like this though: he did it for himself, not for her. And it was the right thing, he deserved it. She didn’t. (Possibly bad english, I apologize.)

It's good to forgive. But that woman was absolutely toxic to Leonard for his entire life, and she never changed. After he left home, he should have never let her back into his life. She's an accomplished author in child psychology and knew exactly what Leonard needed in terms of emotional wellbeing. But she didn't give him that because she "simply had no interest" in putting in that effort. And she never had any remorse for it either. It would have been much healthier for him to forgive her while also distancing himself from her until she did show true remorse for her actions (or lack thereof).

Well, the final of the show was left pretty open ended so that could possibly be what ended up becoming of their relationship… Either this ended up giving them an opportunity to at least have a more civil relationship with her being more careful/thoughtful, which I don’t think Leonard would be entirely against now that he has his peace… or… She doesn’t change and he is civil, but now he’s finally doing something that he’s been needing to do for a very long time - setting boundaries and maintaining those boundaries.

She knew but she does not have the capacity to actually IMPLEMENT it herself. Don't you get it? Beverly has a lot of disorders. Anti-Social probably. A lot of other psychological problems (ironically). I can understand a bit since I hate socializing too. I KNOW HOW, but I do not have the capacity to do it. I rarely pick up on social cues and I only see my own well being. Even if I hurt others. When your belief contradicts what is drilled into you, it becomes a war within you. And most of the time, you choose to ignore what is taught. Truth is, Beverly should have been reported to the DCFS the moment they discovered that she used Leonard for her "experiments". She was unfit to be his mother. She was the culprit in ruining Leonard's life yes but she is a victim too. Sheldon would have become like her if he did not have Mary. Or worse. Beverly was not so lucky in having her parents.

Trust me, this is realistic. You're never going to have that big fight moment when you tell everything you don't like about you're family, and they'll apologize to you. And if you do, it won't go as planned. Everyone will always have flaws, more or less toxic, and you can't change that, no matter how munch rage you put in you're facedown with them. But someone can try to live with they're flaws. So either you hate them forever, or you learn to live at peace with them and their flaws, with the hope that they'll to. And his mother? used him as a lab rat entirety of his life and played favorites among his siblings and neglected Leonard despite him very academically successful. Badly handled. Chuck Lorre is an idiot that always mixes these themes up and ends up with a GARBAGE result. The reason the last four seasons were ASS, is because they had TAAHM humor in them.

Chuck Lorre seems to have strong starts with shows but fails to end them on a high note whether it’s the beef with Charlie Sheen or dragging TBBT for too long as I feel it should’ve stopped around S6 or 8

As much as I love this show, the way all the women are portrayed leaves a lot to be desired. Beverly is portrayed as this uncaring robot because she dared to be a careless person, the same could be said for Bernie as well which isn't a bad thing at all yet the show makes it seem like it is when it isn't and this, along with the other problems with the show leaves the show with a tainted look despite the success this show has had. On the topic of this scene alone, it's cool that Leonard got over his mommy issues( I'm personally against parental issues in media because it's usually handled in a rather unconvincing manner ) however his mommy issues *CAME* *FROM* *HIM*, *NOT* *BEVERLY* (per se) and yet the show makes it seem like Beverly was bad for merely being careless which is completely unfair to the character of Beverly but like I mentioned before, none of the women on the show are portrayed fairly here. Beverly wasn't a ''bad mother'' at all, she was just someone that clearly valued her work and others' accomplishments more than personal feelings and there's nothing bad about that at all. My problem here is the show's kind-of-but-not-really insinuation that a woman like Beverly is evil for valuing accomplishments over personal feelings as though it's bad to value accomplishments in the first place when that's not true at all. Beverly simply needed to recognize that Leonard needed recognition from her *AND* Leonard needed to realise that he should live with his own life and not seek validation. I apologise for for this long comment but I *JUST* can't overlook the minor problems of the show as they're so apparent that I can't help but think that the show's success was born out of a fluke but it obviously wasn't, the show's storylines and plotlines are consistent but it definitely could've been better in some areas.

Bev got off way too easily. She should have been called out on her atrocious behaviour and paid him a ton of money for putting him in her book. In the end, he should have disowned her and kicked her to the kerb. Personal note: It's not the first the writers and lorre have raised some fuced up shiz disguised as humour. In later series, human experimation, pedo, and misogyny are all used as a source of humour. Sick stuff.

@TankPunisher-kr2yz Forgiveness requires a person to rise above their hurt and resentment to let go of negative feelings towards someone who has wronged them. This act can be empowering because it allows individuals to move forward without being burdened by past grievances. Generally, the ability to forgive is more commonly associated with emotional resilience and maturity.
