Warren, as far as I know, only sang this role early in his career. Sound from this live recording ( a 40’s MET broadcast probably ) is only adequate but still gives a good representation of Warren’s unique sound although I feel Merrill on the first Sutherland recording & Pablo Elvira on a LIVE MET broadcast (as well as in a Live Prospect Park in Brooklyn in 1989) are Warren’s equal in this opening LUCIA aria anyway. Warren’s dark sound & superior dramatic qualities are somewhat wasted in this rather one dimensional character which Merrill himself deemed the lousiest baritone role ever written. Good to finally hear him here but his wonderful art was served better by other roles like RIGOLETTO for instance.
