Hmm its hard to say. I think there were moments where he was ok but I wonder how much of the bad was him and how much was the god awful dialogue. Perhaps if George had gone the original route where he comes up with the story but has help with the script and has another person direct we couldve maybe had much better films.

Even after being asked to spy on the Chancellor and witnessing the Jedi Order's hypocrisy, being denied the distinction of defeating the most influential and powerful Sith lord, he still defends the Jedi. Remember the Opera scene, Anakin specifically tries to justify attacks on the Jedi from Palpatine and he says they use the power for good. Although Sidious does succeed in planting the appeal of the dark side, he also highlights and uses that desperacy of Anakin's emotional distress for his wife to turn him. By doing so, Anakin's ideals of a dictatorship is also brought out of him and he believes in the what the Empire stands for. Anakin is a devil's advocate for the first half of III. He believes the Jedi Order is flawed but not enough for them to be destroyed. Mace Windu was killed by the best villain of all time and he was crucial in the rise of the most tragic hero of all time...so not a lame death. As for the fight choreography, you probably should have seen the behind the scenes too. Lucas specificaly points out how this is a Jedi Golden Age, and how they fighting and dueling skills are prized in the Order and all the Jedi are trained for it their entire life

It's not bullying. Leo was a legitimate candidate for the role back in 2000 but decided to pass on it after prelimintary talks. This is something some of us have always wanted to see. No disrespect to Hayden but Leo is a different class of actor.

Hell yeah, the only thing the sequels has over the prequels is dialogue and acting, and that's only in certain instances, however other than that, the world building, lore building, adventure, storytelling, Action/Battle sequences, characterization, characters, set pieces are all much better in the prequels.

believe it or not a decent actor makes amendments to the script and most directors admire that. What makes Hayden so bad isn't his line delivery, its his lack of creativity in wanting to make his character stronger. I'm not going to presume Leo would have been right for this role, but Leo has made some major improvisations in his movies that have made them cult classics. Christensen is nothing more than a line reader and only cares to collect a paycheck. A true actor owns his role and only uses the script as a template. I'm sure Leo would have said something other than some dumb dialogue concerning fucking sand lol.

Daniel Carlo Believe it or not, professional actors are expected to do the job they’ve been hired to do, quickly and efficiently, and without a fuss. For the most part, that means speaking the lines as written, and making sense of them the best they can. They are not hired as writers, and many directors do not at all appreciate being told by actors that they think they can do better than the writer. Writers appreciate it even less (not to mention the writers’ union which, not surprisingly, has a problem with it). Crews tend to view actors who hold up proceedings by standing around saying things like “my character would never say that” as pretentious wankers and prima donnas. It’s not a quality that is broadly admired or encouraged in a young actor. When the writer and director are the same person, it’d be an especially ballsy move to tell him that his dialogue sucks. Harrison Ford famously did so and got away with it, but his situation was wildly different to Christensen’s. He was an older, more experienced actor, working with a young director (younger than himself) on what was, relatively speaking, a small independent picture. He and Lucas had known each other personally and professionally for years, and had already made American Graffiti together. Mark Hamill has said he had no idea that changing your dialogue was even something you could do as an actor until he saw Ford get away with it. Yes, actors sometimes improvise, and sometimes change their dialogue. Some directors specifically work in an improvisational style, where such input is welcome and encouraged. But it is far from the norm. Actors who feel comfortable doing it, and who get away with it outside of an explicitly improvisational context, tend to be high profile, experienced actors who have amassed a degree of power and influence that rivals the director’s - as has been the case with DiCaprio for most of his career. That was not Christensen’s situation. This was his first high-profile job, as a cog in a massive unwieldy machine with a thousand moving parts going a million miles a minute. He was working with arguably the most famous film maker in the world on the biggest franchise ever. The last thing he would have wanted to do would be to alienate Lucas by shitting on his writing or coming across as “difficult”. Also, rewriting dialogue was simply not part of his job. In any case, it’s clear from the end result that one of two things was true: either Lucas was entirely unreceptive to any suggestions of improvements to his script, or else EVERYBODY (not just Christensen) was so intimidated that they failed to make the suggestions in the first place. Christensen may not be a great actor, but his reputation was incredibly ill-served by Star Wars. Everyone looks like a bad actor in the prequels, especially in their first appearance. Liam Neeson, for example, is a wonderful actor, but you wouldn’t know it from Phantom Menace. But he, and virtually every other actor in a lead role, had the advantage of already having a substantial body of work behind them that audiences were familiar with. Christensen, on the other hand, was introduced to the world, in the most high profile way possible, as an inexperienced actor speaking terrible dialogue, to CGI characters in a CGI environment he’s having to imagine, and receiving almost no direction, and never really got the opportunity to put that behind him. It’s incredibly unfair to judge his entire capacity as an actor from that impossible situation. What’s even more unfair is to hold him responsible for the dialogue written by the guy who put him in that position.

And no-one spends as much time with a character as its actor, so the „my character would never do that“ argument is usually valid. (Sometimes the motivation is a secret to be revealed in a sequel, then the director explains it.)

magicmulder None of which negates any of the points I made, changes the fact that actors substantially changing their dialogue is the exception rather than the rule, or the central fact that it is incredibly unfair to hold a young actor, with no clout, responsible for not forcing a hugely powerful writer/director, famous for not submitting his work to the outside influences that might have saved it from itself, to change dialogue. It’s not like it’s the only bit of bad dialogue in the film. The script would have required a fundamental overhaul from beginning to end to stop it being laughable. All the other actors spoke terrible dialogue as well, presumably as written. Christensen just has the misfortune of getting stuck with the one line that has become the meme that sums up the quality of the movie as a whole, and for being unknown to most of the audience for anything but this one role, performed in the most difficult circumstances, without direction, when he was very inexperienced. As I said, he may not be the greatest actor in the world, but even if he was the greatest actor in the world, we wouldn’t have learned it from this role. Di Caprio was incredibly lucky to have already been in a position where he could turn this role down. It was, in hindsight, one of the best career decisions he’s made. Christensen wasn’t in that position, and the guy should be cut some slack.
