The Don Quixote wedding Grand Pas de Deux is an iconic segment featured in many galas, mixed rep productions, and competitions. Solos from this pas de deux are how many classical ballet dancers are measured in the eyes of the ballet world as careers are made from this dance. In this video, I present an analysis from one of my favorite Don Quixote video performances from the Mariinsky Ballet’s Leonid Sarafanov from 2006. His three solos are stunning with stellar leaps, intricate turns, gorgeous extension, all done with impeccable technique and form.

Sarafanov was outstanding, stunning technique and interpretation😮

Leonid Sarafanov - His physical instrument for dancing is perfect. Dimensionless stretching, femininely graceful lines of legs, the lightest, "shooting" upward jump, brilliant coordination, technique that does not know breakdowns - this is the ideal of a dancer of the new century. He jumps two heads higher than his partner. The brilliance of Sarafanov's dance arias dazzles. He is a ballet jeweler, the master of solo dance, who has no equal neither in the height of the jump, nor in the clarity of the antrash, nor in the surprisingly fast rotations. The dancer intuitively feels how to present one and the same plastic phrase in different ways, how to color seemingly completely identical movements, add softness or, conversely, sharpen, extend an effective dance passage. In countless double air tours. The slight growth gave precedent at the Mariinsky Theater to call him - Little Prince of the Mariinsky Theater. This speaks of the great love of the audience and the troupe for him.

I have no technical knowledge of ballet but the first time I saw this video, which was in 2009, I knew instinctively that I was privileged to witness true greatness.

When i see the pictures Baryshnikov seems dryer than Sarafanov, his grace is fantastic with the choice of the mist difficult sequences!!😮😮😮😮😮

Leonid and Olesya are my favourite ballet dancers. It is so pity that he left Mariinsky theater for Mikhailovsky.

I nearly didn’t want to watch this because, as you said here, this Don Q sequence is ubiquitous and I’m heartily tired of the music, not the dancing. In fact, if I watch a new pair, I’ll mute the music. I clicked on this immediately after having watched Sarafanov complete 39 entrechat six from “Giselle.” What else, lol?!? I was stunned that he did so many, with such elegance, and equally stunned the he didn’t need to windmill his arms to help him leap until the very end….he is so slight, without the bulging thigh muscles of Ivan Vasiliev, but his must be made of steel! I’ll add the link in case others read this and wish to see it; I’m sure you already have! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yVnT0WdxAhU.html
