This is such a well done video. Love the disclaimer on this being your care guide and not the only source of info you need for leopard gecko's. Also, love the promotion of variety in diet (this is so under promoted in the reptile hobby). Gratz on 500!
Did you mention that these guys can live 20 years? If you take good care of them, of course :) (If you did, sorry 😅) You deserve much more subs! Amazing video
Leopards are one of my favorite lizards, they’re so cute and I love that they can become friendly. I’ve got a Fat Tailed Gecko named Striker, he’s such a great lil guy.
Wow you had 500 subscribers at the time this video was released 6 months ago and you’re now over 7k, congrats on the channel growth man! You 100% deserve it, I’m glad I’m along the for the ride
Rewatching this because I'm getting a leopard gecko sooon. I cant decide what to name her, but shes a normal morph. Also I cant wait until you blow up on RU-vid (you deserve it!) And I can say I've been here this long.
I'm getting a leopard gecko soon(waiting for heat mat and thermostat I ordered). It will be kept in a 20 gallon tank, with reptile carpet, 2 hides, a few fake plants, and I plan on using mealworms.
I cohab as well. I make sure they have plenty of space and food and hiding space. In fact the older ones have helped the younger ones shed and are all chill with each other
holy crap!! i just bought a leopard gecko and found this older video of yours and you only had 500 subs!!!! congrats on all your growth love your videos
lol Its November 2020 right now and I just got myself my first Leopard Gecko. I thought it was funny that he was talking about getting to 600 subs and now he's at 50K! So much helpful and useful information. Great Job!
@@WickensWickedReptiles I got him. His names haku. I think he adjusted to his new home fairly quickly I was told he was mean but is already eating off of my finger and letting me pet it! Thank you for sharing your knowledge love what you do to help animals and the people considering buying
i love leos so much but my dad is terrified of all reptiles. I managed to convince him by making a power point and stating all the research I had and reasons my I should have a leo lol. This is so helpful though, thank you.
Power point? 😂 I swear if my kid ever pulls out a power point because he wants something he'll get an ice cream along with whatever he wants to convince me of. That's some commitment right there 😆 I'm still laughing. Freaking power point. That's awesome
I say fantastic video! Just what I was looking for straight forward while still giving the owner choices to choose how to keep their leopard gecko different or the same as yours! Great job!😁 this really and I mean really helped out.
Thanks for researching! To often beginners in the hobby are led astray by uneducated big box pet stores. I realize the customer should be doing research before buying a pet, but often times that isn’t the case.
@@MEGAMCLOVIIN yeah I don’t really care about company policy. I’ll flat out tell people “don’t get these wheels for the hamsters” or “don’t even think about buying calcium sand” or even “ you know you can easily just buy a bag of play sand from Lowe’s as a substrate”
@@andreapurser9250 do they let you tell hamsters need atleast a 40 breeder and sometimes a 12 inch wheel? Do they let you tell customers about the nitrogen cycle?
I started a RU-vid vlog on my RU-vid channel about my reptile zoo for information and my free community gift of knowing reptiles and I was thinking about making a gecko tank, I was confident that I would find a good video, thank you very much 😊 happy to see another grate video of another reptile and care...your one of four people I watch nightly after I worked on my first room and vloged for the day. When I first saw you I was learning about ball pythons. I am thankful to find this video bud keep up the good work I'll start checking in on your channel daily now.
I've been looking to get a leopard gecko for ages and have done tons of research and watched loads of videos for more opinions before I get one! This by far is my favourite video! I love your voice and enthusiasm! Makes the video so much better to watch! Was really helpful with all your information and experience!
i just got my first leopard gecko last week and i love it so much! thanks for all the info! i want to show my gecko off in a vlog real soon would you like to make a guest appearance?
great vid so good to see someone giving great advice and not saying my way is the only way of being right lol but i think your spot on the best care , only thing i would add is that they do love to dig both males and femals so if kept on one of the solid floorings add a dig box for them to dig in
My 2 leopard geckos are named Little Foot & Sarah !!!!!!! Clearly great minds think alike and your most likey a 90s baby. Thanks tho this was really organized and hit all the main points i had some questions about you were a huge help!
I discovered you today at like 120K subscribers. Got my first reptile ever--leopard gecko--and this popped up while I looked for info. Crazy to think you only had 500 at the time, barely a year ago
2020 but uploaded in early 2019 still very informal and i'm sure the care really doesn't change much over the years so it's ok. I'd highly recommend this to my friends who own leopard geckos
Thanks for the info! I bought a leopard gecko about 2 months ago. Bought another smaller one about 3 weeks ago. So far....getting along. I have been getting so much conflicting info on how to care for them. Definitely going to remove sand tomorrow and will replace with paper towels temporarily. Might go with reptile carpet.
This has helped me so much as I am interested in a Leopard Gecko and I have been researching them for quite a while now! Do you have any tips for owning them? 🦎
Awesome video! I'm currently a collector of tarantulas but the leopard gecko has been on my want list for a while now and this video helps ALOT! But, I wish it had links to the things you said they need in the description so i know I'm buying the right things
@@WickensWickedReptiles understand that. I actually didn't realize til after this video that your from Canada. But other youtubers I've seen outside of the usa just put links for there country along with links for the usa as well.
All loose substrate comes with _some_ impaction risk but in substrates like Eco Earth and Reptisoil these chances are minimal. I've even seen leopard geckos get impacted from paper towel before. However, I don't recommend ANY kind of sand to be used in a leopard gecko enclosure - or really any lizard enclosure unless you have some kind of lizard that needs to burrow in sand. I honestly recommend tile over loose substrates, but Reptisoil is the way to go. Very low impaction risk, natural, can support a bioactive enclosure, and doesn't affect humidity. Eco Earth can increase humidity in your tank - if you use it and it doesn't, that's perfectly fine. But if your humidity is getting too high, remove the Eco. If your gecko seems to be cleaning their eyes a lot or their eyes seem irritated, this can be an effect of Eco Earth, because, when dry, Eco Earth can be very dusty. That being said it does make a good substrate for a humid hide, where it will provide humidity very well, and when wet does not cause issues with dust. Reptile carpet is also not the best - inconvenient to clean, can snag teeth and claws, and can harbor bacteria. I recommend replacing reptile carpets every few months to prevent bacteria build-up or possible infection of your gecko. With regards to diet I recommend against mealworms as a staple feeder. Their chitin can be difficult to digest. I recommend crickets instead. It's a little more involved and annoying but your gecko will probably enjoy them more. Also be sure to gut-load your feeder insects. If you don't know what it means, then google it - this comment is going to be very long already. Also dusting with calcium is not just something that you _can_ do - it's something you _need to do_. They also need a multivitamin, on a rotating schedule every feeding - I recommend watching a video from the channel called Leopard Gecko on supplementation schedules for the proper way to schedule feedings. Also, how much you feed depends on how old they are. If they're younger than 6 months, they need fed every day, 6 months to 12 months, every other day, and after 1 year, every 3 days. With regards to cohabbing, most people these days have heard of numerous cases where 2 females will get territorial and fight. Some are fine but they may still fight. If you see any signs of aggression when cohabbing any 2 leopard geckos, separate them *immediately*. Males and females should not be cohabbed except for breeding. 2 males should NEVER be cohabbed, because they are highly territorial and will compete just about 90% of the time. Overall, there is good reason to simply avoid cohabbing altogether simply to avoid risking aggression between your geckos.
Hey, thanks for this comment! I was wondering if you could recommend a specific soil and substrate? I'd like to try out a mix of soil and sand as he did. Hopefully you see this. Have a good one!
I’m getting my first leopard gecko in 1-2 weeks and your videos have helped so much. I also like how you named them after The Land Before Time so I’m going to name mine Sharptooth.
I want a leopard gecko and this video was soooo helpful! I actually wanted a bearded dragon because I had an iguana (his name was Sandy, he massed away due to disease or stress 😭 a year or two ago), but found that we didn’t have a big enough enclosure and we didn’t want to buy a 70 gallon tank (plus we sold our iguana’s heating lamps and enclosure). THEN I wanted a Russian Tortoise but they were too hard to take care of it seemed, and we have a dog in the backyard (where I wanted to construct a playpen) so our dog would destroy it. So then I decided to research leopard and crested geckos. I wanted a more affectionate gecko, so I finally settled on the Leos. Now I’m doing some research! I’ve never had a leopard gecko, but they sound super cute and fun!
Ok here is my setup for my adult Leo. -15 gallon tank. -3 hides warm hide cold and humid hide - tile for substrate - a bit of leaves to climb on. - water bowl - heat mat - crickets and super worms for food - thermostats - and calsium!!!! This is what I have for for my leo
We keep a disabled adult male leapered gecko in a ten gallon tank he does great but he walks on his knees in the front legs . Was given to us and that's how he came . Kool little guy .
Love this! I've had my leopard gecko Lu for 7 years. He was my first reptile I love my fatboi. I have been keeping him on paper towels, but I have been thinking recently about upgrading his habitat a little, now that I'm not broke all the time. This was really great to watch. Thanks for the great info.
I subscribed. My son found your videos and wants a leopard gecko so he showed me your channel. He's young so I know I'll do most of the care but I just want to make sure I do everything right. Thank you for all the information.
Wickens Wicked Reptiles It doesn't seem to be off, but I'll keep an eye on it to be sure. I may change the hide to a different one and see if that is better.
@@lisamccullough5150 I guess he does. I was posting a different answer here, but then realized I was posting to the wrong comment. You’re probably right. He probably uses it when I’m not looking.
Very well done. I like how you use a substrate for many of your geckos. I am a very recent convert to soil substrates (esp bio-active) due to the ability to have lower air humidity but have humidity in the soil for the animal to access . Using a good 2 1/2 to 3 inches of substrate, leopard geckos will make burrows under flat-ish (I use cork flats for example) objects to have a humid hide w/o the need for a container to do so. This eliminates needing caves and such, which maximizes the space in the cage because the substrate becomes the hide. I know there are more ways than one to get the same result (a healthy gecko), just sharing experiences.
I got my leopard gecko from a petsmart but only because i needed to save him. He was very thin when i say him in that small tank they had him in. And there were 3 others in there with him. I didn't have everything i needed for him when i first got him. But i got what he needed over time when i had the money. Now he's almost 2 years old. And one very happy spoiled and lazy gecko. You'd love him.
@Ashley Williamson it's not so much how employees take care of the animals it's where they come from. Animals from Petco and petsmart come from mills that overbreed and mass breed their animals with no care about said animals genetics, temperament, etc. They only care about getting money so when you buy an animal from a chain pet store you're giving them what they want and telling them they need to keep producing this animal because they are in demand.
Cassidy Williford the last time when i went to pet smart to get food for my pets, the leopard geckos were severely underfed, their head was way larger then their body’s and their tails were not the size they were supposed to be
Brilliant video, very interesting and helpful, my 19 year old son wants one, so I’m checking he has been doing his homework, I will take him to a local reptile shop! Thank for such a clear concise video, thank you!
David Larkin still looking into it, my son has autistic , he looks after his pets like he is a vet! He is looking for the right housing! Do you think we need to get a pair or just one? Thank you for your assistance!
@@Hayley0412 about 20-30 gallons, then just one. I would say 40+ gallons two would be fine. But no, they don't have to be in pairs. And course! Hope you have a ton of fun!
Hi there . I need some knowledge on my females. I have two females and are both around 3 years old, i recently introduced a male which didnt go well. I would like to know how will i know when my females ovulate>?
