French version of the Les Misérables Encore Finale (Do You Hear the People Sing), with lyrics.
LYRICS (if they're unreadable on the video)

The words here are so powerful: "The glorious day will come, When on its march to the ideal, Mankind will progress from evil To good and from falsehoods to truth, A dream may yet die, But hope lives on forever! Will you join in our crusade, Of those with hopes for humanity? For every fallen barricade, One hundred more will rise again! I thought the English version was inspiring. Then I read the lyrics to the French version, particularly this line, and I wish so badly it made its way into the English version. It so perfectly captures the spirit of the story- that just because one attempt to help the dispossessed didn't work, it's not a reason to stop trying.

Rocky Wang - The song is in no way a communist one. The revolution of 1848 was to abolish the Orléans monarchy that had done nothing to alleviate the situation of the commoners, and the population wanted to change this by instilling a true democracy instead of the flawed one that didn’t have a responsible government.

The English lyrics say, they're all in heaven its okay, use non-violent means to achieve your aims, violence does nothing. The French ones say though they have died, their example has inspired others and they will arise in a bloody revolutionary glory that the forces of the oppressors will never be able to suppress. For each lonely barricade that falls a hundred others will raise themselves tomorrow!

The French lyrics incorporate the core of Hugo's philosophical musings in the book. They are in part all but direct quotes from it, just singable. So lovely. ♥️ At one point, speaking of the French Revolution, the narrator says that if you want to explain it in just one word, that word is Progress; and if you want to explain Progress in one word, that word is Tomorrow (demain). I found it really touching how the final word in the song is "demain" , recalling Hugo's hopeful words...

Because this was the original version? :D Few know this, but this musical was originally written in in 1980 by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natelas as a French concept album and later a stage production, after the former was inspired from seeing a production of "Oliver!". The English version, with lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer, was made originally for the Royal Shakespeare Company and opened at the Barbican Centre in London in 1985, finally making it to Broadway in March 1987.

I love every version of this song I've heard. BUT, this one just hits a bit different. Most versions seem to relate to some religious theme, and boil down to, be a good person, and eventually some higher power will make the world a good place. THIS version, to the best of my knowledge is the only one that centers on the the theme that humanity itself, attempts to do a little better each time, and will go further and further, in a never ending mission of self-improvent and seeking betterment. For each and any failure, more will pick up where we faltered, and ultimately, we will all march in the same direction, do better then we did before. It is possibly the simpliest expression of the most beautiful view of humankind

You're right, but I need to point out that this epilogue was added after the English version came out. In the original French album, the epilogue was Valjean's death, with no Eponine, Fantine or Bishop. Anyway, I prefer this epilogue to the English one: it's closer to the spirit of the book, keeping the focus on the earthly life and the change that can happen here in the future, rather than in some vague Afterlife.

Actually I don't think it is the same thing that "A la volonté du peuple", because here, the meaning is: "Our revolution failed, but our ideal still exist, and one day, every misérables on earth will be free, equal and brothers", our as they say: "For one barricade that falls, a hundred others will rise tomorrow"

Common Misconception: Les Miserables is actually an opera as 90% of the production is sung.

These lyrics are so powerful and relevant, and carry such a strong message! The english ones on the other hand promote a more passive attitude, with the whole "they will live again in freedom in the garden of the Lord", which doesn't even fit with the revolutionary music! I so wish that the english lyrics were closer to the french ones, or even that they were changed now; it's never too late to join the march!

Translation: For the will of the people, None can extinguish our voice, And so the song will ring out forever, As it had so long before. We wish that our light Penetrates the mask of night, To illuminate our land And to change our lives. The glorious day will come, When on its march to the ideal, Mankind will progress from evil To good and from falsehoods to truth, A dream may yet die, But hope lives on forever! Will you join in our crusade Of those with hopes for humanity? For every fallen barricade, One hundred more will rise again! For the will of the people, We hear the sound of distant drums, Announcing the future that they bring When tomorrow comes! Will you join in our crusade Of those with hopes for humanity? For every fallen barricade, One hundred more will rise again! For the will of the people, We hear the sound of distant drums, Announcing the future that they bring When tomorrow comes! Ah! Tomorrow comes!

The French version reflects the spirit of the Second French Revolution, because in the end, it changed little, and while the First Canut Revolt and the June Rebellion tried to change the regime of Louis-Philippe, the only thing that changed France for the better was the Third French Revolution of 1848.

I think this one is better than the english one. Because the french version insist that the willing of people would bring a wonderful tomorrow of themselves, while the english version claims it is God who save the poor.

You're welcome. I assumed this was the 1991 Paris Revival cast since this song wasnt included in the Original French versions, and the 1991 version was the one that changed some parts of the Original, to fit better with the english version, creating songs like this one and ''Le Grand Jour'', and changing the lyrics of many songs, such as ''À la volonté du peuplé'', etc...

I have to admit that I really like the "Do you hear the people sing" line but otherwise I think I prefer the French lyrics. They make more sense to me too. I've unfortunately only seen the English version (not that it isn't awesome too!) but I'd love to see the French version some day. Well, this year there will be a Finnish version, I think for the first time. It'll be interesting to see it in my own language. I just hope they'll do a good job... I'm kind of worried.

The history behind the musical and book and their many translations do honor to Hugo, don't you think? But I agree, the original is always the best.
