Toner is just color dyes. Like transtint. Or aniline dye. pigments diluted in some form of solvent.

Many Les Paul owners do not realize that the original binding and pickup rings were indeed white. They use creme colored stuff, thinking that's the right color. I also use an airbrush with slight yellow tint on the binding to give it that aged look that finger dirt and grit will give it an aged look.

Yes, indeed, binding and pickguards should be a bit of a different color. They were made of the same material. It has the color of ivory. The pickup frames M69 were made of another plastic, but they were also very light. This plastic turns yellow with time and ultraviolet. Therefore, we can observe completely different shades of plastic on the original LP. Just like the different fading of the top. By now, bunding and pickguards from that material are very expensive. Frames M69 from butyrate acetate just do unimaginable money. And it's not a fact that they are of the right color, since today's color of the original frames is not the same as it was 60 years ago.

In my experience with butyrate, there isn't WHITE butyrate and the "double white" PAF bobbins were never white. RAW uncolored butyrate is a natural off white color, but its not white. I did some research on having bobbins made and was sent a sample of uncolored butyrate and it perfectly matches the rare double white PAF pickups I've had in my shop over the years. Exact match. I know this because I opened one of the double whites that had never been opened before to repair a coil break, everything inside the cover was pristine and new. I never did research to find out what the pickguards were made of, so I don't know about that part, but in photographs of many old bursts the pickguard and pickup rings don't match in color. Have not had a vintage pickup ring here in the creamish color so I don't know about those either, but the bobbins I do know. VERY NICE WORK, by the way ;-) I've had great luck with sanding the parts and using shoe polish and powdered rust. The acetone and alcohol idea is new to me, I like that you can subtract the color with that if you go too far.
