Growing up it was all about LP's and Strats, then Charvels and Jackson's! Played P-90's for first time in my 30's and was shocked how awesome and rock n roll it is! Own a 01 LP Jr and I can plug it into a tin can and it'll KILL! Plus always cuts through in band mix! Nice demo mate!

Thank you Dmitry, you’re right. Even as a kid, I just gravitated to the warm fat tones of Gibsons. A classic example for me is the guitar solo from Hotel California - two phenomenal guitar performances in the one solo - one on a 70’s Telecaster (Walsh) the other on a ‘59 Les Paul (Felder) - and it’s Felder’s tones that steal my heart every time 🙏. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a sucker for a beaten up Tele but my heart tends to lie with Gibson.

Well there’s good news and bad news there... Unfortunately, I’m just giving the illusion of that.... The good news is that you can too! But that’s part of its charm, and then you can wind up to Max when you want certain notes to really bloom. Have fun! And that neck.... classic 50’s chunky. 🙏

Hi Paul thanks for your comment on my Custom shop Junior that arrived earlier. Only had very limited time with it at the moment, gone up to 10’s the original owner had it set up with 9’s. My Junior is a 2019 model, really loving it even though I’ve had very little time with it up to now. Great fat neck but not as large as my Historic 59 335. Only discovered your channel less than a week ago whilst searching for a Lukas Nelson junior, your demonstration of your Junior came up! The Lukas Nelson model is impossible to find used or new so decided to go for a Custom shop model. Really enjoying your playing and superb tones. The Junior sounds superb through my LazyJ 20. Mark.

I wish companies would start giving you gear to review and keep you busy here on RU-vid so we can see more of you! To be completely frank, I think you and your playing could sell more products than some guys that only have the numbers but yet again, it has become a numbers game... oh and I'm so glad that the buyer for my DC Junior chickened out. Regardless of all that, my own personal ambition is to be invited on to the Anderton’s TV RU-vid channel. The owner is Lee Anderton and he does a show call “Captain meets....”, where he brings on a non famous player that is making a quiet name for themselves, i.e. a RU-vidr. I’m going to Thailand next month and thanks to COVID, I will probably be stuck there for several months. I have been struggling to decide which guitar I should bring with me - it has to be versatile and fun to play. Based on the fun factor I eventually nailed it down to either my 57 Les Paul Jr or my custom built LSL Bad Bone. The later has a neck humbucker with coil split and a single coil on the bridge so versatility wise it cannot be beaten. The Junior, on the other hand, scares me. It’s like asking yourself which guitar you’d bring with you to a desert island where you will be stuck for the rest of your life. And a life without a neck humbucker seems like a terrible idea! Eventually I decided to take the LSL and had my inner peace again... until I saw this video! Now I think I should bring the Junior and hope it will make me a better player, which is approximately 1/100 of your level, by the time my trip ends. Am I doomed with this decision? Will I be able to endure the pain of having only one pickup? Or perhaps you can save me by making another video with that Tele of yours, LOL.

I run a Les Paul Jr. thru a Super Reverb and a Supro Black Magick. The Supro loves P90's. The Super Reverb loves everything as expected. But the raunchy overdrive from the Supro borders on sick.

Hi Jimmy. Yes, I’ve done a few things… I’ve subjected it to the hairdryer / compressed air trick, which has worked particularly well on this guitar! As a result the lacquer is now covered in fine checking. You can see a bit of this on my recent vid “How I think”…. As the light hits the upper bout you’ll notice the checking. I’ve also applied slight dings to body edges and the top of the headstock. Nothing too dramatic…. definitely understated. A few paint chips here and there. I’ve sandpapered the back of the neck for a smoother / worn playing feel. I’ve also applied a little steel wool to certain areas. And then used T-Cut to remove the scratches from the wool. The result is a dulling of the shine. And lastly, I’ve sat it in the sunshine on my garden lawn for around 10hrs…. I’ll continue to do this on the few sunny days we get here in Scotland 🤣. I know from doing this to my Les Paul R9 that around 50hrs has a very noticeable affect on the look. My R9 is MUCH more faded than it was at the start of my channel in 2017. Overall, I’m happy with the look 😊

Thank you Clinton, for such a lovely compliment! Actually, it’s very timely that you should mention trying Flatwounds on it. Because I’ve just ordered a set (my favourite - Thomastik Infeld). But I’m debating which guitar to try them on. I know from experience that they work particularly nicely on guitars that naturally have plenty of treble and bite…. hence why the Telecaster was the best experiment so far. But I do feel like trying them on the Junior…. Or the Epiphone Riviera….🤔

Hi Paul. A bit of a advise from you. I know that you don't like thin strings. And I haven't played electric guitar for many years and now I have bought a Les Paul Junior copy. Can I start with 11 gauge with out killing my fingers? It's so easy to choose thin strings to avoid the eventual pain on the fingers. But I can see that maybe I loose the tone that the Junior is capable of by putting thin strings on it.
@paulstaffordcook8799
@paulstaffordcook8799 2 года назад
Great question! Yes, I 100% suggest you go for gauge 11 on the Junior (and all Gibson scale lengths), despite the extra “fight”. Plus, if you’re getting sore, just quit bending for a while and you’ll recover. That’s my thoughts anyway 😊. On fender guitars it’s a different story of course. The longer scale length makes 11s really quite difficult on Fenders.

@paulstaffordcook8799
@paulstaffordcook8799 2 года назад
Great question! The Goldtop is more complex, varied and more instantly appealing and “Les Paul” like. Whereas the Junior has a very distinct voice…. unmistakable in fact. Very strident and very direct. Despite both having P90s they’re quite different, so it’s a joy to have both.
@fuzzbear7837
@fuzzbear7837 2 года назад
@@paulstaffordcook8799 thanks! Loved your vids btw! I'm currently deciding if I'll buy a junior or a standard with p90's. I already have a goldtop with pafs, would adding a goldtop with p90s give me something really different or a bit of the same (except for the esthetics;)) ?
@paulstaffordcook8799
@paulstaffordcook8799 2 года назад
It’s funny, I was making a very similar comparison last night - I was playing my R9 (with PAFs) and doing back to back swaps with my Gold Top (P90s)…. They’re both unmistakably “Gibson sounding”, i.e. beefy. But the Gold Top has noticeably more snap, like a Telecaster, whereas the R9 has an instantly more muscular tone. Some could say that having both is perhaps an unjustifiable luxury…. yes, but I just LOVE the looks of both 🙏

Great review, thank you. I definitely believe there is truth when it comes to the vibrations/use of any instrument, or car for that matter. I've owned a few vintage cars and much prefer to buy one which has been driven to one which has stood around looking pretty in a garage - and I'm speaking as someone who drives his cars... and plays his guitars. Let the collectors collect and if they're lucky, make a profit, but one thing they will never have, is the experience of making a P90 squeal like a screaming eagle. Though they can probably pay someone to do so, that's akin to being a cuck, imho.
