In this complete and extensive tutorial we are going to cover the study level Saab 340A turboprop airliner by Leading Edge Simulations, which is part of the Take Command! aircraft series from the X-Aviation store. We will cover everything you need to know to fly this aircraft, including all the provided menus, realistic power up and engine start, GPS flight planning and navigation, autopilot operation, anti ice systems and of course how to descend and perform an ILS landing. The flight is a real world Pacific Coastal Airlines route from Port Hardy Airport (CYZT) to Vancouver Intl Airport (CYVR). I hope you will enjoy the trip ;)
PS: Sorry for occasional audio pops and clicks and distorted voice, I still have some problems with the NVIDIA Shadowplay audio recording.
The route: CYZT (RWY 16) DCT CORMO V317 QQ DCT LIBOG CYVR (ILS RWY 08L)

You can find the "yoke-mounted" checklist that I'm using in this video on the channel's Discord: discord.gg/9bAGmBjFNb

Came across this video during a lock down bout of boredom, pretty good. The use of CTOT is a bit wrong, you set the dial prior to departure but you don't switch it on at that point to prevent inadvertent take-off power applications during taxi. For the take-off you'd advance through the 64 degree gate to around 20% below your required torque value then call for the CTOT to be armed and pilot non-flying would set the system on setting the power to the preset level. You do this because over the time there will always be a stagger between power leavers and you don't want to risk asymmetric application of take-off power as well as minimise any surge on the engines. Similarly when setting climb power after departure you slowly wind down the value on the CTOT to it's minimum setting, the torque values slowly meet the value set by the leavers, typically 80% and stabilises, then you disengage the CTOT system. By simply selecting it to off without reducing the dial causes a big engine surge, flame out, damage etc. A models aren't very tolerant of indelicate CTOT usage and most operators will have a horror story of how much it cost to rebuild an engine due to CTOT mistakes.

Thanks a lot for your detailed explanation. I never fully understood how the CTOT gets used correctly and there's also a lack of documentation about that, so I appreciate it :)

Now that's the way a tutorial should be done. Accurate information from someone who has studied the aircraft. Excellent presentation, too. Keep up the good work. (I subscribed)

I know you posted this a long time ago however I wanted to say thank you anyway. This is exactly how most tutorials should be conducted. It was straightforward and things that needed to be explained were explained. You stayed on topic and didn't skip any steps when walking through how to operate the aircraft. Every question that I had pertaining to this aircraft was answered in your video. I appreciate your help and look forward to other tutorials that you may post in the future.

Excellent tutorial!!! I’ve just subscribed your channel Just three details, not especially important… Wing Lights are just to inspect the wings for ice. Not to be used for Take-off and Landing. CTOT should be set on approach as well, for a possible go around. See Descent Checklist. Engine anti-ice should be only used with visible moisture AND OAT < +10º C (both conditions).
@SimulationChannelDeluxe
@SimulationChannelDeluxe 3 года назад
Thanks for your hints, yes lately I learned how to properly use anti icing and when taking off/landing I thought pilots want all available lights on, to be visible as good as possible for others.
@PSVF2013
@PSVF2013 3 года назад
@@SimulationChannelDeluxe Wing Lights just iluminate both leading edges and are normaly used for a few seconds. They are useless to make the aircraft more visible. If you use them for all take-offs and landings you are reducing significantly the bulbs life and probably one night you need to use it properly and one of them is out of service.

I am finding the quirks of the SAAB 340 difficult to get to grips with, and this tutorial helped enormously. Some of the controls, like the heading bug and VS selector, seem to be tucked away and difficult to find if you don't know where to look. The condition levers still catch me out - pulling them too far back in flight by mistake doesn't end well. I know you can bring out the pop up, so that you can see where you are with them, but it would be nice if you could assign that last stage of travel to a different button.

I'm glad the tutorial helped you! And indeed, the mapping of the thrust levers isn't very convenient. I hope the Saab will receive further updates at some point. Cheers

Thanks so much for this very high quality and informative video. I really enjoy flying the S340 now. The only issue I still have is no ATIS audio or text from the comms radio. I saw you tune the GPS receiver and thought that was the solution because I was tuning the radio on the lower pedestal but both controls were tuning the radio and still no audio or ATIS text at the top of the screen. Any thoughts on what the problem might be? Thanks again.
@williambennett685
@williambennett685 3 года назад
I found the answer in an X-Pilot discussion group. On the Captain right side are volume control sliders for the radios. When you slide them up you get the audio and the ATIS text. I don’t know why the default is off?

Your tut for this LES Saab 340 is the best. It's detailed and you hit on the correct procedures. I have one question. Do you get the TQ on cruise as per the charts.pdf given by LES? For me I never get the correct TQ on the gauges. PDF levels are higher than the readings I get from the TQ gauges at cruise.
@SimulationChannelDeluxe

Thanks a lot, glad you like it. Tbh I don't necessarily use the performance charts, I just try to stay within limits and not go too slow ;) You can see my final cruise power at 42:46.

i was trying to decide between MSFS or X Plane. Really the only airplane i want to fly is the Saab 340 and since there are no SAABs on MSFS i guess i will be buying X Plane since it is obvious they have SAABs

Not a good idea putting the CTOT on until you're about to roll down the runway for take-off.

You can also look for this little plugin/Visual Enhancement Mod - LES Saab 340 1.00. it is very helpfull for Speeds and QNH Settings.

Indeed I tried that out, but I found out that the modded .acf file that you have to replace doesn't seem to be the most up-to-date one that you get with v1.5.1. So I didn't want to mix up the updates there ;)

Autopilot has bug, which developer do not fix, plane does not want to turn more than 12.5 degres when on autopilot. So plane is unable to follow procedural approaches, unless handflied
@SimulationChannelDeluxe

Yes that's true, it's like the cruise bank limiter that some aircraft feature is always enabled and can't be switched to normal 30° bank mode. I hope this bird gets an update, maybe even a version 2, at some point.

Nice vdo, you mentioned you mapped the paired autopilot engage toggle switches, but how? I see the LES Autopilot section but only see a disengage switch no engage switch. Pressing these switches not so easy at takeoff.
@SimulationChannelDeluxe
@SimulationChannelDeluxe 4 года назад
I don't remember the exact command, but as the switch is located on the lower pedestal, it might be that the keybinding can be found in a different category than "autopilot".

Moin moin, thank you for this video. But I have two questions. I Know the checklist say to close the high pressure valves before landing, but as I understand the aircraft manual the high pressure system is needed for the nose wheel steering. Did I misunderstood the manual or must the high pressure reopened .... . Similar problem with the "Bleeds off" during start. According to the manual air conditioning and pressurization is one system (no separate Packs). So if you switch the bleed valves off the pressurization would not work any more. Is it the normal way to disable them an readable them after initial climb or.....? This two questions haunting me this I read the 340 manual. Would be nice if you or somebody else had an answer, thanx.
@jimbo7979
@jimbo7979 3 года назад
Hi pogonator, the high pressure valves are just bleed air and have no relation to nose wheel steering, you turn them off on the landing checklist basically to make sure full power is available on a go around. The bleeds off during start is so that you don't pull in any fumes during start up and don't make the starter work any harder than it needs to by taking air away. Pressurisation isn't really a major thing on the ground, you'd pop the LP valves back on after start just to ventilate/heat/cool the pax, if it's a pack off take-off then you'd open the high and low pressure valves when you're setting climb power and the aircraft starts to pressurise at that point. Hope that helps.

You can assign key commands for the gust lock engage and disengage. I have noticed that the low speed handling characteristics of this model are quite poor, particularly along the roll axis. It just rolls back and forth and is very hard to control while hand flying, kind of like what you experienced during landing, pretty unstable it seems to me. The rest of the aircraft is pretty good. Make sure NOT to use experimental model though, made the mistake early on accidentally.
@SimulationChannelDeluxe
@SimulationChannelDeluxe 4 года назад
Thanks for the hints mate! I might have overlooked the gust lock assignments then lol ;) Indeed the roll feels a bit sluggish, but not too bad imo, might be tweaked with some sensitivity curves. And I never have the experimental flight model on, so no issues on that end ;) Cheers
