The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

She later went back into music and wrote music with her brother for the Movie, Fame. Quit acting like today’s snowflakes. Her life, was her business.

For Mercury Records, it was all about profits. After Quincy left Mercury, Lesley was handed from one producer to another to revive her career. Nothing worked so Mercury dropped her from the label.

This is incredible! So rare to see Lesley during this time period. Her last hit was California Nights 3 years prior to this appearance on Ed Sullivan. She looks fantastic, as always. Such a great talent.

She deserved to have more hits after CALIFORNIA NIGHTS but music was changing rapidly and the pop charts were being dominated by harder rock sounds unfortunately - Lesley got 'cornered' into that "it's my party" girl kind of image that was hard to shake - Being a most devoted fan, I bought all her records even after she wasn't having Big hits although I don't really think it was a strategic career move to go over to "Crewe Records" and while I enjoyed her Mowest LP SOMEPLACE ELSE NOW it didn't see robust record sales. I really thought that a couple of years later when she did the A&M album that featured "Immortality" that it would produce a hit, but it didn't really - I was always hoping that Lesley would have a comeback Hit but it somehow eluded her - however, she did have loyal fans and did great on the concert tours -

@@JohnnyGNV Radio would not promote any of her new releases after 1967. She virtually disappeared from radio after 1967. I never heard from her again until she was nominated in 1980 for writing Out Here On My Own for Fame. 1967's California Nights was really her last gasp at stardom. I did run into Lesley in 1980 at a restaurant. She was rude and seemingly bitter and so I never approached her again although she often frequented the restaurant that I worked at in 1980.

@@JohnnyGNV I agree, she deserved more hits, however Mercury could not find the right producers/material for Lesley. True, Someplace Else Now was not a big seller for her mostly for lack of promotion and I think because the buying public didn't want to see Lesley "grow up" and away from It's My Party. Lesley went to Crewe Records as she had some success with him at Mercury Records. She had stated he was a great producer, but not very good at business. His company went bankrupt and Lesley was again without a label.

Finally!!!!! After decades of looking for this video. I saw it at that time and haven't seen it since until now some 50 years later. This shows Lesley at her very best....she was so incredible and performances like this should have had her at the top of the music industry....what a travestry....she was robbed

I adored Lesley, can't stand that she is gone - saw her many times in concert - she was astonishingly underrated as a singer and performer in the Music world. I actually remember this appearance as a kid when by this time we finally had a Color TV and I loved Lesley's eyes in color -

Always one of my favorite artists. Such a pure, dulcet voice. I saw her in concert in San Francisco in 2004 when she was promoting her new release. She was wonderful, and I got to meet her after the performance. She was a great person, very down to earth and warm, and meeting her was a real thrill! Really love this video--she sounds incredible, and I like the contrast between the two songs. Inspired choice!

Lesley recorded a studio version of "Cry Me A River/Hey Jude" which was never released. This was around the time she signed with Bob Crewe's label, Crewe Records. Sure would be nice it the recording were to be released, wouldn't it?

Yes, this was around the brief time she was with CREWE Records but I did not know she recorded this - maybe I did know at one time (?) and did she not sing this "medley" on her "LESLEY IN LOVE" WPIX-TV Special? Yes it would be great if it could somehow be released -

I have found others criticizing the "odd" choice of songs. I think it is marvelous! It takes a song , such as "Cry Me a River," full of angst, and as all humans do, the "other" voice in their head, takes a sad song and makes it better. The possibilities are endless for the situation--the person could actually be remembering some of the good times with the person, , or even the possibility of the person to be. I LOVE the way she does not break character as the person singing each song, but (especially the one singing "Cry Me a River," turns and listens to the other one singing "Hey Jude." It is so simple , yet complicated--a fantastic pairing of songs. This is one "mashup" of songs that she did for years. I saw her do it in person in 1974. Of course, she did not have the advantage of the crafty camera work, which helped separate the two emotions better. I love how she never loses her smile on "Hey Jude."

Oh yes she was often on night time talk shows and variety shows singing pop songs of the day, it's just that hit records started to elude her because music was getting harder-edged and Lesley was regarded as representing a more innocent time -

@@JohnnyGNV The problem was that Lesley was being pigeon-holed as the 60s pop singer even though she could do so much more. She was even singing soul music. Two songs I'll Be Standing By and Take Good Care (Of My Heart) sound like they were songs from the 70s even though they were recorded in 1968. Mercury thought the songs didn't fit her image, and so they were not played. She was singing jazz before she was even discovered. It was a jazz demo that got her hooked up with Mercury Records and Quincy Jones.
