I always loved Lesley Gore. I was surprised to see her at Six Flags in NJ in the 90s. They announced Chubby Checker was going to be on in a few minutes...and then there she was...after the cover band.

Wow I have 40 Lesley gore original 45s and this is like finding a buried treasure I cried so much when she passed I met her in Manhattan and she was so sweet and we had coffee and lunch and chatted and I was given a copy of her greatest hits cd and she hugged me and gave me a kiss what a great woman and treasure now I can say I have all of her music unless the company has other hidden albums thank you for sharing this great treasure all the best be safe and careful

Wow. When I met Lesley in 1980 I had the opposite experience with her. She used to come into the restaurant where I worked quite often. One day I told her that I really enjoyed her performance on the TAMI show which at the time was playing down the street at a movie theatre. Her reaction was to be mean and nasty and it seemed as though she had a big chip on her shoulder. She could have just said "thank you" rather than being so nasty to those serving her food.

@@jackjules7552 wow maybe she was going through a bad time because when I met her she told me she had bad fan issues and one saw her and tried to punch her for no reason sometimes they just have bad days like everyone else and being in the spotlight and starting so young and facing lots of negative issues for being a lesbian and also being pulled all over would be enough to get anyone a bit upset I am sorry you had a bad time but it might have been bad timing

This is a work of art. Probably her best she's ever done. It was a shame this wasn't released, it seemed like it would have been a huge success. "It's A Happening World" is a treasure, and also "To Sir With Love" is a great presentation of Lesley's vocals.

No kidding! How long did it take for you to realise that? She had way more talent than Mercury knew what to do with! I've heard this lady sing (and do justice to) everything from Sinatra to AC/DC!

Mercury shelved the MAGIC COLORS album due to the lack of chart activity of the single MAGIC COLORS. Lesley's single CALIFORNIA NIGHTS was climbing up the charts so they shelved the MAGIC COLORS album and took Lesley back into the studio to record tracks for the CALIFORNIA NIGHTS album.

Lesley recorded two 1968 soul songs. Mercury didn't think they fit the image that they had for her, and so they weren't played. They sound really good. They sound like 70s songs. Thought I had consumed every Gore song from the purchase of the "It's My Party" album close in time to it's release. Guess not. My whole life I've been obsessed with 3 artists/groups: Dylan (naturally), Rhett Miller/Old 97's and the transcendent Ms. Gore. A weak voice that vastly improved with age, she captured what can only be described as White, teenage, suburban, pure, unadulterated pop. For a girl-crazy boy with a similar profile I felt transported to where I wanted to be with her music. Particularly liked the theme of unrequited, troubled infatuation (with the angst of adolescence): What Am I Gonna Do With You, She's a Fool, Maybe I Know, Wonder Boy, I Saw You, I Won't Love You Any More (Sorry) and so many others. Won't He Ever See the Light on the instant album fits this category nicely. The only songs I never appreciated were her covers though How Can I Be Sure on this album is enjoyable.

Mercury made a huge mistake not releasing this They also would not let here sing Groovy kind of love" which would have been a hit for her Magic colors could have been Lesley's Sgt Pepper Album While not as edgy it is an eclectic album of great merit I have the CD but would like to have it on good old vinyl too

Yes! It's like Mercury gave up on her. Also, every time I hear the Mindbenders' version of "A Groovy Kind of Love" all I can hear is how much better Lesley would've done it and it makes me mad at Shelby Singleton (her producer at the time) all over again for being so short-sighted.

The Magic Colors single failed to chart very high (#102) which prompted Mercury to shelf the album.

A few retreads of songs done better by others and some other uninspired tunes. Lesley's sultry and exciting voice is just as strong here as her previous recordings, but most of these selections are lackluster.

I know,I know Les sounds so much like pet but pet made a lot more money than Les and besides that there was her producer Quincy jones who should have gotten a lot more attention her way but unfortunately the Michael Jackson’s of the world was a far bigger priority and like a Gary Lewis performers like Les were on their way out no matter how much talent they had!

I like Lesley Gore less than I used to because of the disconnect between her lesbian private life and her boy-girl lyrics. A decade later Elton John was able to be openly gay and have hits. Lesley should have hired lyricists to perform more suitable material. Her entire hitmaking career was fake.

She didn't accept that she was a lesbian until she was 20. So I don't think it was all fake. I do agree though that I think she could've done lesbian songs a bit later, it was a different time though.

Lesley became frustrated with the material she was being offered, turned to writing her own material in the 70's and found a fantastic lyricist in Ellen Weston. The songs they wrote together are some of my personal favourites ("Don't Stop Me", "Immortality", "Can't Seem To Live Our Good Times Down, etc.), unfortunately that period of Lesley's career is rather overlooked. Two studios albums ("Someplace Else Now" and my personal favourite LSG album "Love Me By Name") were produced during that period although the songs on "Love Me By Name" don't sound half as good as they did in concert in my opinion. Sadly live recordings of those songs are hard to come by. Also I don't think it's at all fair to call Lesley's hitmaking career "fake". Firstly, as other commenters have said, Lesley's lesbian private life only really started after she entered her twenties, in one interview she said that early on due to her upbringing she was as "boy-crazy" as everyone else her age. Secondly, Lesley very much abandoned the "boy-girl" type of songs from her early career (save for singing her old hits) and switched over to much more ambiguous/androgenous lyrics, for example "Don't Wanna Be One", "Give It To Me Sweet Thing", "I'd Like To Be" or "Out Here On My Own". Thirdly, if Lesley decided not to write and perform overtly lesbian material even after coming out I think we can assume that she didn't feel the need to. She considered her orientation "irrelevant" to her music and said so in interviews. Personally one of the reasons I appreciate Lesley Gore's music is that I've always found her to be a very genuine singer although Mercury certainly made it difficult for her in the 60's by being very controlling regarding what material she could sing (we missed out on a lot of good jazz that way!), which is one of the reasons I like her later work best. Sorry for ranting, I just love Lesley Gore.
