For those wondering, even the base screen option (FHD 1920 x 1200 IPS) is a piece of art - 100% sRGB color coverage, No PWM, and 1630:1 contrast ratio!
@thraxberserker9960 60hz on OLED feels like 120hz from an LED LCD. OLED has practically instantaneous pixel response time and naturally very smooth motion. While I agree that for the price they should be doing better, you won't be disappointed with this display and it won't feel like you're used to seeing from 60hz.
The lower tier GPUs are the only ones that make sense in the 15”. Above the 4050 or so you’ll see diminishing returns due to the 40W TDP limit. The XPS 17 seems like a decent desktop replacement and has better cooling but unfortunately it’s considerably more expensive because it isn’t facing price pressure because there aren’t many other thin 17” desktop replacement laptops out there.
Don't get this for gaming, and don't waste your money on an i9 in this chassis. Its just too small, but the based nvidia GPU and an I7 are a great paring. More then that and there just isn't enough heat dissipation.
@@dylans2669 My 14" gaming laptop begs to differ. You can get better performance in a smaller chassis especially with 40 series. Dell just doesn't use any of the proper thermal solutions for the hardware.
yeah, but it is still cool to have such power in this small package. I can easily just undervolt/power limit my cpu and gpu, and have a consistent gaming experience with it. 4070 + oled 3.5 display for just $2500 is actually some of the best deal we can have right now.
I've had my xps 15 for 3 years now...I've stayed up to date with firmware and cleaning and let me tell you, it is one of the best purchases I've ever made. The thing still crushes everything I throw at it, even light gaming. It has slowed a bit as you would expect from any computer, but it is still a fantastic machine. No complaints at all from me.
For those who are interested in this laptop but not at this moment I recommend getting it next spring/summer when it goes on clearance! I did that for mine and got last years with good specs for $1200 brand new
I hope that the 2024 model will have an AMD ryzen CPU and a 120hz screen 2024 update: dell didn't make the XPS with a 120hz refresh rate and Ryzen processor, hopefully 2025 will give us those new specs
I just bought the one with 16gb ram and a 4050. The local Best Buy did not have the non-GPU sku in stock. This thing is easily the best piece of consumer hardware i've ever touched.
@@JiajuChen not really, yeah thats the target, but when the air comes that close in performance and everything else, a lot of people would save the money and get the air instead of the pro over this
@@bradhaines3142 The XPS's with nvidia hardware are vastly more expensive than the mac pros with the UHD panel (which you would need to get comparable specs). You could get the 16 inch m2 Pro, mid spec (upgraded storage, CPU) for *less* than the UHD 4070 model. That is insane. edit; i misunderstood your response. ignore.
@@bradhaines3142 Then they don’t know what they actually need. Yes macbooks perform exceptionally well in video editing and stuff, but xps is targeted as power user who NEED that GPU and CPU performance in that thin Chassis. As XPS user and macbook pro user, I know many buy them because they want them, but not because they need them. For those who need to do hard work except video editing, mba is simply not enough.
I have a Dell XPS 7590 which will turn 4 this year. My experience with it has been absolutely amazing. I think apart from the performance, the biggest advantage of a Dell XPS laptop is RELIABILITY. This laptop has not given me any issues since I got it. My next laptop is definitely going to be another Dell XPS for sure.
I have a 7590 too and while I love the strong build quality, the thermals are horrible. I5 base model btw. My battery is in ok condition but needs a replacement but there are no replacements available. The quality of the fans are horrible. If a single hair gets in the fans it'll sound like a boat engine in a few weeks. I've also had quality control issues with an alienware laptop and my dad had a very poor experience with driver issues on an inspiron. Call me unlucky but if I'm going to buy an xps again thermals must be fixed, fans must be durable, needs basic IO not just usb c, and their software such as for controlling charging needs to be reliable. On paper, dell laptops sound perfect at a great price, but having experience with them is either underwhelming or frustrating
@@jackgowing1256 That's unfortunate. I guess the thermals and battery of my laptop are also not the same as they used to be either, but considering the machine is 4 years old, I'd say they are holding up pretty good. 90% of the time my laptop is connected to an external monitor so its not that much of an issue for me. I have heard that the new XPS I think the 17" one has a vacuum based cooling system or something so that should help. If they can build that in to the 15 inch version that would be ideal.
That’s what I thought as a serial XPS customer since 2009. Think again. Build quality, performance and support has plummeted in the last 3 years. Avoid.
I'm rocking with a 9500. Going to upgrade once there's a Meteor Lake model. Hyped for that next level of efficiency. Also, I love it that they didn't change the chassis. I do wish the battery was 75% bigger.
My favorite Windows laptop was Dell XPS 15 since 2020 but I feel like the new Lenovo Slim/Yoga Pro 9i looks better than the XPS while also performs better than the XPS
Nice to see more efficient GPU's again. Obviously was a bit shit on desktop side for recent releases but laptops really are where 4000 series will shine I think. Trying to do 3070 with those powers would've probably been much worse result vs lower end GPUs of same gen at same power.
Indeed. These 12nd and 13th gen intel chips are getting really good, all paired with gen4 SSDs and DDR5 and the ever growing iGPUs in these chips, i feel like there's no need for crazy dedicated hardware for most users, in fact it is more desireable to have something like an efficiency processor variant instead of a high power one in these thin laptops. And im tiping this from a 12700h/RTX Vostro. A XPS with an i7 1360P or an i5 1350P would be enough and more efficient + a 2K display and im done. Im not gonna do 3D cad, renders or game on a thin laptop, i just want it to be efficient and snappy for the day to day stuff. A professioal purchasing a 3800usd laptop under the justification of "professional work" and getting a GPU whose TDP is 50W and an i9 that will throttle in seconds is stupid, trust me, it doesn't work like that.
These new dell laptops make apples macbook pros look like fantastic value. The upcharge for the "fake" 40 series laptop GPU's here is insane. 650 dollar difference from the Arc to the measly 4050 mobile. Holy shit. They even charge an arm and a leg for storage and RAM. What are they doing.
I think the Asus zenbook 14 pro Oled is really good option for for creators within this price range. Dell has been slacking since 2019, and I'm not surprised this Xps is any better.
Good review. I would have liked to see performance numbers on the A370m model Both for price and value that appears to be the much more interesting variant. (Also it is on sale right now for $1,000) I assume Dell only sent you the top spec, but if you can in the future track down base spec and mid specs it would be appreciated.
The biggest complaints I've seen is that it is way too hot physically in the keyboard and palm rest areas, so uncomfortably hot that people joke about cooking on it (I do like the look though). This is why I went ahead and purchased the Legion Slim 7i Gen 8 maxed out; also as a side note, I don't like the Pro variant of the legion since they went with a lot of plastic unlike the Slim. Great video review! Cheers
The worst thing about Dells are the batteries - starts with limited performance even when new followed most likely by full depletion 2 years into usage. I know this from owning several Dells. And let's not forget the constant fan noise at the lightest tasks.
completely agree. My XPS13s battery became trash 3 years into ownership. Extremely disappointing for what you pay. And replacement batteries are a fortune too
This used to be the Windows laptop for creators. That is no longer the case, and Dell is the only one to blame for it. At the 2500 dollar price point there are many different options to think about, but you also need to look at what you get. In 2023 a laptop of this caliber needs to have at least HDMI 2.1 and a 120 Hz screen, I am certain next year will be the reveal, and in January 2024 I can see it best in class at CES. If Dell keeps going with this mentality of: "Nobody can touch us" they will have their cake eaten and then some.
Biggest problem with the XPS and it's precision cousin is that Dell stick to a pretty rigid 4 year cycle. They just insert the latest CPU/GPU generation with little regard to heat management and throttling. By the end of the cycle you end up with devices that struggle to deliver the performance effectively. Add into that the dated 720P webcam, no wifi 6E and limited display options on a $2.5k premium laptop. Effectively they don't even update the internal components e.g wifi card. If we wanted an XPS 95xx we'd be better off saving a chunk on one of the previous iterations as it wouldn't be that far off. Have they finally fixed the trackpad issues? Still a lovely device to own despite it's age and obvious limitations.
It is industry standard, around a 4-year design cycle. This is because, in a mature market like laptops, it is about survival more than anything else. Spending hundreds of millions on a new design every year or two has little upshot in sales numbers. Even Apple with the revolutionary Apple Silicon can barely break 10% of the market.
I just orderd the Dell 9530 with the i9 13900H CPU,Nvidia RTX 4070,1TB NVme SSD and 64 GB of ram as my new mobile work station as a mechanical engineer and owner of a drone photography and videography company here in Toronto Canada.I am upgrading from a 2019 Dell XPS 15 which was my previous mobile work station. The other main aspect to consider is the customer service from Dellin comparison to that of Razer.
As an XPS owner i have a few comments. First, at least in the past, buying a brand new 15" XPS ridiculously expensive. However, I have bought 2 refurbished XPS 15s that where both well spec'd for the time and have had good luck. The first needed a screen replacement (send it back just after receipt) that was replaced under warranty. I replaced the cooling fans and keyboard myself around the 5 year mark (it wasn't expensive). The second has not had any issues. Both are still going strong with the first being a 9560 and the second being a 9520. However, once any initial issues are fixed these things have great build quality which for me translates to long usable life. I use my laptops around 8 hours a day so they don't just sit on my desk looking pretty, i use them for work. Thus, buying a refurbished one is worth it to me. Performance wise though you have to accept that you are not getting the highest performance machine. Its just not. But its great for multitasking and general productivity use and holds up well. I have had MACs in the past as well and i think the XPS line and MACs are both in the same class build quality wise.
I have the 9520 from last year - I love it - i7 with 3050 - hits the sweet spot for me with performance I need for gaming (I don't need blazing fast performance, but can still play hogwarts at 40-60 fps on mid settings) and the battery is.. fine, I am interested in this new model with the i7 and the 4050 to see the battery life if that is better. All in all love the xps 15, other than the garbage webcam - its basically like it doesn't have one - I only use a usb webcam if I actually need it for calls.
Problem is Dell is too comfortable , they know many people are going to buy their laptops regardless of new features or any improvements being made.I doubt the people who buy XPS devices check specs much and probably buy it because of aesthetics, probability and they trust the brand .Until this year the only competition they had was Apple and in windows the infamous Razer laptops.
Another excellent presentation. Disclaimer: I no longer consider purchasing Dell products, even though I was an early adopter (1990s-2000s) of their products and owned Dell stock for a number of years.
Ive had about 6 genertions of XPS and last year switch to the M1 Mac 14 inch. I dont think ill ever buy another XPS laptop again. They need a redesign and AMD in it for me to consider it again.
They should really offer a QHD IPS panel with a high refresh rate instead of that same 1200p panel which IMO is too low for an expensive laptop. I don't care about webcam quality so that's whatever but the screen you look at every day. And the biggest thing that has kept me from getting one is the terrible QC issues that I keep hearing about from everyone.
Would be interested in some battery performance numbers. The biggest issue i have with by 9520 (and my prior 9560) was battery life. Obviously, I always want more but has there been any real progress on that front? BTW people, don't buy a 15 inch laptop with a 4k display. Your not going to be able to discern the pixels on a 1080p panel let alone a 4k panel and the 4k panel will significantly decrease your battery life.
Still thinking with so many better options out there, who is still buying the XPSs? Once you start using bright 120hz displays and get overall performance better than XPSs, it gets more and more difficult to go back to it.
You can't go wrong with Dell laptops. I had one from 12years ago an Inspiron 14 with 2nd gen core i3. It served me for six years, everything was working fine until the charging port gave out.
Going from the 3050 Ti to the 4070 was a HUGE upgrade! Unfortunate that now you can only get these things with the Arc A370M. They arent even the speed of the 1650 Ti we saw on the 9500!
i recently picked up the 4060 and 13700h model refurbished for 1500 cad and holy crap i love it, battery life is fabulous for the specs and i am really really impressed with it.
@@Smallman647 Also runs extremely hot. Some other youtubers joke about cooking on it and that it's really uncomfortable to use. I rather go with the Lenovo Legion series lineups.
I'm not the target audience so I'm only looking in. But if you're a real professional then wouldn't you just spend the money on a desktop. I'm assuming that a professional would need a multi monitor setup with high performance. Feels weird that a pro would shell out so much money for sub par product. The only benefit is portability. But I don't know how much a pro is going to push this machine when he/she is offer his/her desk.
@@jesus2621 um their M1 uarch was visionary and unprecedented in computing...I'm an Android/Linux fanboy and I have to admit it. X86/64 hasn't made such leaps in 15+ years. If you can't see or admit this, you're just blind. Pay your dues, even if it ain't your team.
@@jesus2621 Maybe if those that continuously hate Apple for some apparent deep psychological reason, would actually try a MacBook they would understand why they are better (mostly).
Dell XPS are great laptops, but Dell support is dog s**t, and simply a deal breaker. Sent in my 9520 to fix a broken trackpad, and when Dell sent it back, there are screws rattling around inside the computer and they stripped the crap out of the bottom screws.
I have a 2019 MBP, but the XPS has always caught my eye. If the MacBooks keep rocking that hideous notch. I'll switch over to XPS once software support ends for me.
Great video, but I will admit I am confused lol. I have been looking for a new work laptop. I do graphic design and photo editing. I had eliminated the XPS 15 after reading about poor thermal performance and had settled on the Microsoft Surface Laptop 15. Recently with some newer 2023 models and someone suggesting the Inspiron 16 plus, I have given Dell some more thought (not to mention the Lenovo slim pro 9i 16" was once on my short list as well, funny enough you mentioned it in this video). Like I said, I am confused. Do you have any thoughts or advice on the models I have mentioned. Thanks in advance.
The Dell XPS 15 is great for certain things: - C# & C++ developers - Java developers using Linux. - Game developers - Civil/Mechanical/Automotive engineers - Architects If those are not your careers, then there are other laptops choices.
Must be only me,… had a glossy-reflective display on an HP ENVY Laptop once… but I applied a matte screen protector and loved it. Just remembered it when Eber mentioned the OLED screen.
1499 CAD now with i7 and 4060 (no point to go higher with 40 w limit). 400 CAD to get 64 gigs of good ram and 2nd ssd. Personally i found it to be best on a market now.
Shame the 4070 card is limited to 50w making it way less powerful than other laptops in the same category. Hoping they get a new cooling design next year so the full performance can actually be used.
Battery life is already limited, I would keep it at 40w even if thermals improved. To me the xps is a productivity laptop and shouldn't be tethered to the wall. I had a 7590 with a 1650 and I just feel that I wouldn't be happy. Maybe on a 17 inch it would be more appropriate since it is less portable
@@jackgowing1256 then I'd much rather get the 4060 model. No reason to pay a premium for a card you cant use In laptops with highet tdp, you can always just limit the tdp as well, or turn of the dgpu and use the igpu
The Laptop itself has incredible build quality and performance. BUT... The one thing that I've honestly hated more than anything, is the touchpad. It's huge meaning I accidentally touch it when typing and it's click and drag recognition is incredibly inconsistent. It's a shame as it feels really nice and smooth.
quick question. Having a powerful workstation, is the intel GPU enough to work with Premiere on the road? Mainly for proxies creation, dailies, and rough cuts editing (no long export) of log 4k files.
Owned one for a week. returned it. Absolute dog %$*# for 2023 laptop. Throttles like crazy over minimal tasks, battery dies WHILE its plugged in.. like.. dude.. Dell dropped the ball hard, AGAIN.
Is the cooling any better? XPS have always felt like you're typing on lava after having them turned on for 30 mins. Also have they resolved all the sleep issues with this generation?
This has been on my mind for a while now. Do laptops need to be better every year or just different? because at least they get more expensive year over year.
What other options would you explore? Should I get one of these around the $13-1500 mark or spend a bit more for a 2022 blade 15 advanced? I am a bit concerned about the blades battery though haha
"if it ain't broke, don't fix it" That saying only works if it aint broke. The chassis was good 5 years ago, but it doesn't work with modern hardware. It struggles to run the 4070 at even 50 watts without thermal throttling.
Was. Now it's a poor clone. It has a worse port selection, worse battery life, a worse webcam, and worse build quality on the 2020/2021 model. They need to redesign the chassis again.
XPS is garbage, ask anyone who owned one. They are overhating and throtteling and you have to tinker with undervolting both CPU and GPU. Performance is just on paper.
@Rabaikal Oh you don't have to tell me. The 2019 model used such an aging chassis which while it had better port selection, upgradability, the webcam finally in the right place, and a bigger battery, it still had bad thermals, only one NMVe slot, and some driver issues to the point they even said they weren't going to fix them (the iGPU banding issues).
It's just hilarious, how Dell does same thing every designs cycle. 2016 and 2020 they present new design, that everyone praise, and competition trying to catch up, but by the end of it, like in 2019 and now, everyone just disappointed. But the most sad thing about it, that those late model actually peak their respect generation, not only in performance, but also in QC and material decisions. Anyway, hope for 2024 model to blow us away once again😅
I would like to ask you about this Xps 15 touch screen. I do digital painting using Photoshop so is it easy to use a pen with the screen for that, please? Is it better to buy the touch screen one or without for a longer lifetime use? Thank you

I guess content creators think that if they just say XPS laptops are powerful and well built year after year, it will magically come true. In reality, every year XPS laptops are known for severe throttling, unstable firmware, and that "premium build" lasts a couple months tops before it starts to fall apart usually starting with the hinge.
I have always thought most people buy XPS for the pretty display; those that care more about superficial aesthetics than performance, efficiency, QC or value.
Are we supposed to believe that the margins on a product like this are so close to the bone that they couldn’t afford literally $4 more for a way better 1080p webcam image sensor?
They are waiting for the redesign so they can make space for better webcam tech. It is not cost-effective to redesign one part, especially in an economic downturn when Dell laptop sales are in steep decline.
Please tell me noone is spending $2999 on a DELL XPS with a 45w 4070 gpu. I have a 32gb HP Envy 16 with with a 90w 4060, 120hz 2560x 1600 display, 1TB ssd that I spent $1599 for on sale at Best Buy. Do your research people. There is plenty of value out there for less than $2k.

That's not bad at all especially when you been wanting the screen DELL seemed to make their own and buy rights to is one of the most gorgeous screens on laptops but the fact this is just a regular computer with no ability to do powerful gaming like with the Zypherus G14, I'll pass.

oled is much better than miniled considering light bleeding. fingers crossed they release a 4k oled @120 Hz next year. although youtube is not supporting this framerate.
It pisses me off that they still use 60Hz here instead of 90 or 120Hz. (They don’t need to go way higher than 120, but 90-120 just feels absolutely better than 60.
i have the 406 8gb xps 15 and literaly cannot play any games with good graphics or fps, i even got a cooling pad t see if it boost performance. Anyone know what i can do.
I do not know how you got the performance of Lenovo Slim Pro 9i 16. The one I bought from Costco was very slow. I was so excited when I bought it. I was immediately disappointed after I first booted it up. I just couldn't believe it was so slow for its high spec. I intended to replace my 6 years old laptop with this one. But it is not smoother that the old one. I tried to improve its performance by disabling BitLocker. It improved a little bit but still slow. Is it just the Costco model? I doubt that Slim Pro 9i 16 from other sources are very different.
