Please support the production of LESS CAR MORE GO: the crowdsourced cargo bike documentary, by backing our Kickstarter here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/...
This is a new and improved version of what was "The US Cargo Bike Revolution doc trailer." (The big changes are toward the end.)
Do you love your cargo bike? Has it changed your life? Your family? Your town?
Join me in producing an authentic crowdsourced document of a cultural revolution in progress. I'm seeking submissions from cargo bike folk all over the world to combine in the form of a feature length documentary. More info at www.lizcanning.com. Watch the trailer, visit my site, get inspired and learn how to become a co-director!

Wow, this is super inspiring! I've been drooling over cargo bikes for awhile... ever since seeing huge loads carried by bike in Southeast Asia.

To some of us the first 1.5 minutes resonate deeply. A complete dissatisfaction with what's really important in our short lives. The type of thinking that inspires radical change. Ride on!

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for being part of this movement. My partner and I don't own a car and accomplish all our errands via bike. Full disclosure would be appreciated. There are few affordable, well-made parts and bicycle manufacturers based in the US. Hopefully these ideas will lead to more metalworking jobs. Even then, I'm skeptical at best that structural change will be achieved. An ongoing, and important, discourse will inevitably ensue.

How could anyone give this a thumbs down? Excellent video! Virtually all of our shopping is done with a MTB in road going trim and a WIKE shopping trailer. This does not compromise the bike which can revert to its original configuration in a matter of seconds. Having said that I would love to own a Long John type design. As a matter of interest has anyone used one of these for loaded touring?

She is right at the end of the video...once you start to ride a cargo bike to do all of your commuting and do all of your hauling, you want to do it! I built mt own cargo bike that is simialar to a bike with an Xtracycle kit. I have been to the grocery store and carried a whole shopping carts worth of stuff on it!

Loved video. I'm in my 50's and feel like those kids when I"m riding my bikes. I hope children who are raised by parents who use cargo bikes make it a way of life. Liz's bike is so nice I"m looking for a similar bike to haul my Grandaughter around.!!

Awesome. I'm in the UK, and moved house by bike 11 years ago. I hope you extend the film to around the world. Want me to do some filming? I have a custom-made trailer and heavy duty bike, and transport my circus show around, also logs, compostables.... you name it, if it's not more than about 100kg, I can carry it. I look forward to the film even if it is US only. This video made me laugh and cry.

I own a Big Dummy cargo bike - and I am convinced that a trike is much better suited for cargo loads than a two wheeler ! The two wheeler, when loaded down gets squirrely and unstable and the front forks seem wobbly !

Hi Alan I also have a big dummy which I built up recently and found it exactly as you say when loaded until I put on a front rack and panniers which when loaded makes if perform like it does when unloaded. Highly suggest giving it a try. the BD is a great bike I think especially if you want to be able to head to the dirt like I do.

Be sure you get the main cargo weight low and forward of the rear axle. I'm happy to ride no-hands with 100 pounds of stuff loaded that way. Personal best/worst was 270 pounds of cargo, including 160lbs of unbalanced lumber and 110lb passenger as a counterweight. Bike was "stable" in its unstoppable but very predictable oscillation -- the long lumber turned it into a giant tuning fork.

The views expressed in this video are inspirational, but romantic. Cargo bikes aren't cheap. They are cheap relative to owning a car, but they are not "cheap". Even at cost they run $1000+, which for low-income families is a large investment. Conversions run $500-$2000+, see Tom's Cargo Bikes, based out of Portland. The majority of bicycle components are fabricated in the East and shipped West = emissions = externalities not taken into account.

I purchased a usded cargo bike. It is the 3-wheeled verison that can carry 4 children or 250 lbs of ..... It weights over 100 lbs and is work climbing overpasses . I did change the gear box to 8-speeds and put a bigger cog on back.. ~3mph makes it possible to climb, but still needs a lower gear.. I'm thinking about 1mph low gear should do...

Also, I have a 5 month old and I was thinking of getting a bike like you have with the seat/storage in the front.....what do you do on rainy days?? Is there some kind of cover that can be placed over them? Thanks -Britt

I want a cargo bike for me and my 2 little boys. Any opinions on what is better…front cargo or rear cargo? Pros & cons of both???
@04smallmj
@04smallmj 10 лет назад
I'd go for a bakfiets style cargobike if you want to transport children (front cargo), since the Dutch use them and you can supervise and interact with them. The centre of gravity is also very low compared to using child seats or anything mounted on a rear rack. If you're likely to be using it a lot or keeping it for a long time, I recommend getting a model with hub gears, full mudguards (fenders) and dynamo lights. Electric assist might be a useful option too...

04smallmj I am interested in getting a cargo bike for my 3 year old son and I. However, he is autistic and non-verbal. Which is better, a front cargo, or a child carrier that hooks onto a fender at the end of a bike? What are the pros and cons of both?
@04smallmj
@04smallmj 10 лет назад
Lemons19902010 I think front would be better, but it's best to have a look around and test ride a few things before deciding. I found a video called 'A guide to carrying your child on a bicycle' which would probably be useful. I'm not a cargo bike expert, but I know more than the average person :P

1:17 As I understand the video, this is a bike for people who donate to the Democratic Party. I'm looking for a bike built more for serious use than a political statement.
@tconnolly9820
@tconnolly9820 Год назад
Hmmmmm........ I'm not American but when I heard that reference I immediately associated that with there being more of a concensus in the Democratic party even 11 years ago for encouraging alternatives to petroleum and internal combustion engines for personal transportation. Looking at the membership of the Republican party 11 years later right now there still seems to be mostly outright hostility towards supporting alternative options for personal transportation such as bicycles and associated infrastructure. As in bicycles are just for kids and recreation or sport. Not as an alternative to a car. So my question is, would someone contributing to the Republican party in 2023 encourage support for more cycling infrastructure as these people were advocating 11 years ago? Would there be any point in people like these contributing to the Republican party for more cycling support? And what do you mean by a bike built for more serious use? All of those bikes seem to be built for very serious use. Do you mean bikes just built for recreation and sport? I'm very interested to know what your thoughts are. Regards.

This is a wonderful video. And I love my bike. But the idea that the 74% of people in the U.S. like me, who have a commute of 60 miles or more (mine is 90) to get to and from work. And the 100% that depends on the 80 ton truck I drive at work, delivering all of the food, clothes, ect.,(every thing you use, every day came there on a truck. EVERY THING!) Will be able to replace all of our vehicles, with cargo bikes, is a politically motivated utopian fantasy. Be honest. Let's talk about it.
@ClintGrantham
@ClintGrantham 9 лет назад
Please tell me you've lost hope in the Democrat Party and aren't going to push their lies over the Republican's lies in your film. And please don't try and beat people over the head with climate change. People simply shut down when they hear those words. Keep it fun and light. The idea of saving time by not sitting in line at the kid's school was golden. Saving money, feeling good and having happy kids will go much farther than the same old tired idea that we can frighten people into change. #Agorist

I know people who claim riding a bike is an act of regression. They're not being grown up, if they ride a bike. If riding the bike is not a grown up thing to do, fine with me. Being a grown up sucks, and is overrated.

I'd like to see this re-done and re-written with the "donating to the Democratic Party" left out ... Conservatives, TEA Party movement members, even Republicans, ride bikes and you can sell more if you don't undermine your sales pitch with politics ... Left-wing, Liberal or even Right-wing, Conservative. Comprende?

1:20 - Why can't we leave politics out of this. I've been riding a home-built cargo bike (longtail) for 20+ years and it's the one time of the day when I don't hear people on the left and right arguing and hating each other. Guess what...BOTH sides want a better environment. We just differ on how to achieve that goal. Let's talk about cargo bikes and leave the politics for another movie? Please?
