His TEDx Talk is about the importance of getting trilingual.
Gordon Dobie is an English teacher at Uskudar American Academy, specializing in learning multiple languages. After successfully resisting language teaching in high school and at university he discovered he has a gift for languages as long as a hardwork is put in learning them.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Mr.Dobie was my teacher and I have some tips that might work, they really helped me. I'm fluent in Turkish (obviously) English, Spanish and my Chinese level is A2. Mr.Dobie taught us how to learn languages very quick: vocab cards. He gave us a huge list of vocab words at the end of each lesson and asked us to write the English word on one side and the Turkish on the other. We memorised the cards and at the beginning of each lesson he checked if we learned them all (we gave the cards to our class partners and they asked us the words). After a while he wanted a vocab notebook from all of us, listing all the words and Turkish equivalents alphabetically. I continued this method even after Mr.Dobie wasnt my teacher anymore. Now my English is almost better than my Turkish. I used the same method Mr.Dobie gave me on Spanish and Chinese and it did wonders. Dont waste time on duolingo or any app like that before learning the verbs first.

In that case consider learning Esperanto. It's a piece of cake compared to all the "big" languages, and also a great stepping stone to any other language

The countries around India speak Hindi or Urdu (basically the same language) as a lingue franca, not English. They speak English to foreigners, mostly. Oh, the hubris is too much to bear.

Not in தமிழ்நாடு (Tamilnasu). There, Hindi is mostly the language of immigrants from places like Bihar. However, Tamil people do tend to speak English.

黎安沛 Tamilnadu is the Hindi nomination, I believe? It is true, Hindustani does not reach that far.

PewPewPlasmagun Could you please explain what you mean by Hindi nomination? English is not my first language.

黎安沛 Nor mine, but that is beside the point. Do you speak Mandarin?

PewPewPlasmagun In spite of my username, no. Although all my friends speak Mandarin, my mother tongue is தமிழ்(Tamil). But you never explained what you meant though. Cb, you kena avoid question lah.
