It may be called "the poor man's 911" but it is mid engined and the handling is much better than a 911 .... The Boxsters/Caymans are in their own class of driving compared to the rear engined 911.

VANZ STRINGZ Boxster’s and caymans have the identical boxer cylinder blocks as the 911’s. This special boxer 6 NA engine makes 9 different engine note symphony depending on rpm. Given their mid engine layout and nimble chassis, they are arguably the better drivers car. People who bash the cayman and boxster because they are cheaper and underpowered compared to 911s clearly haven’t driven one.

911 owner: Nice cayman loser, couldn't afford a 911? Cayman S owner: nice base loser, couldn't afford the S? No love at the bottom, but we all know at the end of a day, a Porsche is a Porsche.

Audi_ophile not quite, but yes the S is a nice upgrade over the base model and yes for street use there is a limit to how much power you need.

I am waiting to buy a 2009-10 Cayman...S if possible. Having a 7 speed dual clutch, more HP, and 6 speed for the base is worth the wait for me at least. The base 09 is better than the 08 S IMO.

I find the only people who turn their nose up at Cayman owners are not Porsche owners at all. It's the suckers on the sideline who can't afford either cars. The Porsche community has been welcoming of any Porsche's at all the meets and cruises I've been to. It's like a family. Once you're in, you're in. Take good care of it and enjoy it. They're unbelievably good cars. 5 years and zero issues. Knock on wood.

@Sideways G 718 Boxster/Cayman GTS 4.0 all the way, I wouldn't even want any of those other more expensive cars. The Spyder and GT4 are too track orientated, and the 911 is just too big these days.

Last year i found myself in the fortunate position of being able to achieve a childhood dream of buying a new Porsche. I had always dreamed of owning a 911 but after research and test drives i came to the realisation that the 911 had become just too big and wide for the many narrow, hilly, twisty roads that i drive on a daily basis here in south west England. So Cayman it was. I test drove the 718 and the 718s back to back and soon found the base 718 to be just that bit more fun. I think people get too hung up on the idea that more power is best, to me the difference was negligible in the first place. I found that with the base model you could beat on that motor a little bit more and rarely can you use the full 300hp in any case, (red-line in 2nd and your'e at the motorway speed limit, red-line in 3rd and it's loss of licence). Yeah, the s version will get you there marginally quicker and on a race track will achieve a better lap time but better than what? and better than who? 7 months into ownership and i have never once regretted my decision to buy the base Cayman, the thing is just awesome. In my opinion people listen too much to the motoring journalists who almost always will tell you to buy the most expensive version of any model, but remember that they are the ones having their cocks sucked by the manufacturers. I could have easily bought a Carrera S but it wouldn't have suited my needs, so "poor mans 911" will always be just bullshit! So glad that you are still enjoying your base Cayman, that feeling never gets old eh! Thanks for the up-loads.

Love my 981 S. Bought it CPO with 4K miles. Has everything but Pasm. Never looked back. I have tracked every Porsche including GT3’s. While I can afford almost any Porsche (used) it’s hard to cost justify a car I drive 6 months out of the year and 3 days a week. The cost difference ($50k) was spent on a family Disney cruise for 18 if my kids and grandkids. . To me 0-60 1 second faster and + 15 mph top speed isn’t where I choose to put my $$

It really is like that ... Even some car reviewers these Days say that the 911 has become too big for a proper sports car and really has become more of a luxury cruiser... And while its the absolute best looking car (991.1 but thats just my opinion) given the massive savings in price the Cayman is not only the better sports car but also the much better Deal!

This far all the non S owners say they are happy with it and do not need it to be tiny bit faster or tiny bit more powerful... And the S owner say they are happy they bought the S model because they wish the S model was a tiny bit faster and tiny bit more powerful. Think the truth is that the difference is so small that it does not really matter if it is S or non S model.

For me a car is mostly about driving, emotion, tactile connection but maybe most importantly drive-ability. (Speed if fun an all, but after ~300bhp you enter a realm where you cannot use all of it unless you are on the Autobahn and even then 9/10 you cannot) Where I live some roads are pretty bad, with several potholes and roots of trees that ruin the road, I go to Germany 10-25 times a year (for hunting mostly (but I also do other larger trips)), where the roads are WAY better but I still have to use the car around my town. I’ve now driven a Mercedes with 21 inch AMG rims for a while and wrecked 5 rims on the various potholes and road imperfections, on top of that, If I had chosen the smaller wheels the car would have been way more comfortable, The Cayman S, GTS, GT4 ect are all astonishing vehicles but mostly for the rim reason, I would consider the base Cayman instead of the S; more tyre, more comfortable rims and you don’t have the red brakes which aren’t to my taste.
@daithilacha1
@daithilacha1 5 лет назад
Cayman S comes with 18 inch wheels as standard and 40 section tyres. This should make it just as comfortable as the 2.7 model.

I have the base model and absolutely love it! It was a one owner, perfect condition 35,000 miles. I looked at the older 911's but didn't want the troubles it might have with the IMS. Plus most of them had several owners. The Cayman is not a cheap built car in fact It's probably built just as well as any Porsche. if Porsche put the same engine in the Cayman as the 911, the Cayman would smoke it on a track. Plus I like the fact that the Cayman is a two seat err, I don't have to take car when its more than me and my wife. So if Porsche was going to give me a new 911 or a Cayman I'd take the 911 then sell it and buy the Cayman, pocket the $30,000.

I went from a 2014 Cayman S to a 2017 Audi TTS with more power but after a month it didn't satisfy me like the Cayman so I traded it in on a 2014 Cayman Base and love it. I added a version 3 Sprint Booster which took away the accelerator pedal delay and the car is responsive enough that I don't crave the more powerful cars that preceded it. If I took the car to the track then I'd probably miss the extra power of the previous cars but participating in track events has never appealed to me.

I think you have the specs for the 2009+ 2.9L motor. The 2.7 only had about 240hp and 201 torque. I've driven many different Caymans and Boxsters, and I currently own a 911 & 928. I'm a huge fan of the Cayman and I believe you can have just as much fun in the base or the S. The base car has the same great driving dynamics, but the 'slow car fast' rules apply more so than the S model. You have to really push it to it's limits and keep the revs high to drive it fast. Some find this rewarding, and I'm one of those guys. If you want more power, get a 911. The difference in power between the Base Cayman and S isn't really enough to justify the prices because you're entering 911 territory.
@_ArsNova
@_ArsNova 20 дней назад
The 6-speed manual on the Cayman S has 6th gear set to a ratio almost the same as the Cayman base's 5th. The revs are barely lower when you're cruising in top gear. So all you're really getting in it is shorter shifts.

I have an 08 base cayman that I've put 30K miles on in the last 3 years including track days at road atlanta. While I would say more power at the track would have been appreciated it has never been needed anywhere else. The brakes are good for slowing the car from 130 to 50 off the back straight and I don't even touch them until the last marker. 0$ for anything other than basic maintenance over this time. Also time has proven this engine more reliable than the S model. I pass S models on the BRP and the dragon all the time..(and 911's). So... if you can't drive in the turns just pay for more horsepower (but get the hell out of my way).

2 and half year ago, I bought a 13 non S Boxster, and used the 'price difference' to get a e30 race car. The Boxster as nice daily car, 30 highway mpg, auto start stop, Bose sound, heat seat, huge luggage area front and back, and it’s manual so it’s fun. E30 has cheap parts, reliable inline 6, I race it wheel to wheel at NASA, and I won’t worry about wrack it.

The thing is that the difference between the 2,7 and the 3,4 is small... But those that has the 3,4 with 320hp also complain that it could have had a little more power, so if you buy the 2,7 or the 3,4liter it do not matter much, both has a little to little power. Most of those that bought the S model feel happy they went with the larger one, and the people that went for the 2,7 say that are happy with that as the difference to the S model is so small that they feel they are not loosing out on anything really.

I really enjoyed this review. In addition to your point about track riders benefiting from the S, most people who actually do track days will still have to dedicate many track days over a few seasons to get to the actual level of ability needed to extract all the performance out of the Cayman S. Technology is way beyond most of our abilities. *footnote: I am an experienced track rider.

You argued your case well... 😊👍 However, I think that one reason that people deliberate over such choices is not simply based on the difference in power between two models, which translates to slightly quicker acceleration. What REALLY matters more, is the style of driving that you prefer, because HOW each model DELIVERS its power will affect the way you have to drive it in order to exploit that performance. It’s not a hard and fast rule, but lesser powered models usually deliver their peak power higher up the Rev range, so you have to ring the Rev band’s neck in order to get the most out of it. For some drivers - e.g. Honda S2000 enthusiasts - that’s the driving style they prefer... For other drivers, having more power on tap lower down provides more instant response and a lazier, more effortless drive. Anyone who enjoys torquey V8s for example, gets used to that sort of low down grunt and may not enjoy driving models that require more frequent gear changes at high rpms... I know that one can’t generalise too much about cars nowadays, because there’s every combination of engine size, power output, turbo/SC vs naturally aspirated, and gearbox choice imaginable... But as for the base Cayman vs the Cayman S, my recollection of most motoring reviews emphasises that you have to rev the base Cayman higher in order to maximise your progress - which makes sense - so I’d say that anyone trying to rationalise which model to choose, should ask themselves which style of driving they prefer, and - all other considerations being equal - go with the model that is best suited to that style of driving. Most of all... Go with the model that YOU PREFER... not the one that your armchair expert buddies tell you that you should have got. The car YOU enjoy is the best car for you, whatever your buddies or any number of argumentative motoring journalists say to the contrary. Safe driving, and may you never discover what colour your airbags are... ✌️😎

You have some good points for sure. Having the Cayman S I still have to wring out the car to about 4500 rpm to actually feel anything, and I'm sure it's about the same or even higher in the base version. It all depends on the driving style and roads you have, like you said...and if you like doing a lot of shifting.

I bought a BMW e92 328 that was “bare bones” except the sport package. A year later, I had buyers remorse so bought a e92 335 that was loaded. The 335 was way nicer but I I had more fun driving the 328. I think, with the 328, I had to use inertia to get me through corners instead of just using brute force to get me back up to speed. The 328 also felt smaller and more nimble. Just more engaging to me. I do have to say that a tuned 335 is a blast. My daily driver is now a Tesla and it is super car quick but I’m starting to miss the visceral feelings of a manual sports car. I think I’ll stick with a Tesla as a daily driver but also have an “ice” too scratch that “itch”

First of all...it's not just about difference in track times that you should get an S over the base. You drive your car on the street, right? And it's meant to be enjoyed? This is not a blow to standard owners, but there is still plenty of fun to be had with more power and acceleration on streets where you drive daily. One appealing part of the Cayman S is that it levels the playing field with the 997 Carrera, especially once you start to do intake mods and tunes. You can't really do that with a base Cayman...so if you're looking to hang with and/or prove that the Cayman is better than a 911, then you should consider getting the S. Also, I've heard nothing on this...but what about the S providing six gears? The base is only a five speed and the way that Porsche geared the Caymans it revs pretty high for highway cruising speeds in 5th. I'm definitely thankful for 6th gear in my S and almost want a 7th at times. If nothing else, that would be a major selling point of the S.

interceptordave when you buy a Porsche you don’t buy it because its luxurious or confortable. We all know you buy a Porsche because of the driving experience, they provide the best in the business and that is why they are so expensive, that being said the cayman handles incredibly well but the power is just not there, with the cayman S it’s a whole different story, the acceleration is just perfect given the size of the car, and since this is a mid engine car the engine sits literally behind you and the rumble of the flat 6 is just a better experience than a 4. As Mechnomist says, unless you're on a track, you just can't "feel" the performance difference and most of what you "feel" is the awesome handling of either version and the beautiful engine note of either version. I agree, no shame in buying the base car, especially if this is what YOU want. But you can certainly feel the performance difference between a base and an S car on the road, even if only in a straight line.

@@1957robertjohnson The 3.4 has that very nice grunt that the base lacks. Both are great cars. A lot of S models are fitted with 19 inch wheels and 35 section tyres making the ride a little stiffer.

I have had a 2008 S2k from new which is about to hit 120k miles. Bought a Focus RS mk3 to replace her. Couldn't sell her and glad I didn't. Just about to trade the RS in (once the head gasket has been replaced) against a 981 Cayman GTS. Can't wait to drive her, but the S2k is still going nowhere!

I have both an AP1 s2000 and 2005 Boxster S. They're vastly different experiences despite the roadster similarity. The s2k is far more frenetic and involving, but feels less solid and stable as well. They're both amazing cars, and I seem to always prefer whichever I drove last.

There is a 2007 Porsche Cayman S in Chattanooga, TN for $24,900 by a private seller on craigslist. I'm sure it's worth every penny of that considering on AutoTrader, cheapest I could find a base model was $43,000...I don't know if there is anything wrong with the Cayman S, but it looks VERY clean and it's only got 77,000 miles on it. They claim they are only selling it because they want something new. Also, it is the automatic, which kinda sucks....but still doesn't sound too bad.

Back in 2014 I test drove the 981 Cayman and Cayman S (both PDK) back to back. I drove the base cayman first and it felt just as fast and nimble as the S and the sound of both were equally intoxicating. After all that I would probably buy the S model because it is faster even though I can't feel it.

Considered a Cayman / Boxster but I found a 2000 -40k -996/4 cabrio with hardtop for $18k and its awesome . Of course I will change out the IMS for assurance reasons .I'm sure the Cayman is awesome to drive as well being mid engine . I wanted one for the safer aspect of it's design .I owned my first 2000 corvette beforehand and sold it after six months . It just wasn't for me . The 996 is addictive to drive and so precise . How many people really drive their cars regularly at nine tenths on a back road ? Will you really be "disappointed " between either model ? Doubt it. I can see stepping up to a 911 turbo and not wanting to go back to NA . The six speed is awesome but I don't typically shift to sixth until 60mph .

Great video. So true on the base vs s. I bought my 2008 Base 987 5 speed, 10 months ago, absolutley love the car, no regrets. The base is plenty . Also the larger motors "can "suffer from bore scoring significantly more than the 2.7 motors, hardly no bore scoring issues with the 2.7"s on the internet forums compared to 3.4"s.

I’ve driven 981 2.7l and it does lack in power at the lower revs. I need to get it above 5000rpm. I ended up buying 987.1 S and can tell you it’s got power range starts at 1st gear and goes all the way through. In fact, when I rev it up to 5000rpm in 2nd gear, I’m already past the unofficial city speed limits.

To add to the arguments about the quality of the two cars, I suspect the base Cayman prices have pretty much bottomed out, whilst the S prices have some more depreciation to go. They will always be more expensive but the price drop when (if) you resell is going to be less in the base car. Your opinion is echoed across the internet - the cayman is a stunningly good value car, and the base is the better value of the two (FACT!).

Love my 2014 Base Cayman 981 with few options except, sport steering wheel, 20” wheels and PDK. Drive one with PDK, and you won’t want a slow shifting manual ever again. Great sounds as you downshift in a few milliseconds. Why red brake calipers on a base cayman?

I've driven a base, haven't driven an S. My friend that's owned a base and tested S's said there wasn't enough of a difference to justify the price difference. I bought the 2010 Cayman S with 320 hp 24 months ago for $24k. Bought it sight-unseen and had it shipped from San Diego to Missouri and that was included in the price. I'd go with the S model, since it's more power, more fun, and when you know where to look, can be a better deal than the base model. And the 987.2 Caymans have no INS bearing to worry about, so I'd start with that model or later.

Long post, because I honestly don't think this video is a good guide for prospective buyers. I bought a 987.2 S last summer and have put about 1500 km on it. Before buying my car, I spent about three months shopping. I drove the following for extended tests (40+ minutes, some over an hour, various roads and speeds). In some cases, I tested the same car more than once, and in others, I tested the same model more than once in multiple iterations. Some of the 911s had suspension mods, but all Caymans were stock. Mileage varied, but none over 110,000 km (~70,000 miles). Overall, I estimate I put in about 30 hours of test driving. 996 911 C4S 996 911 Turbo 997 911 C2S 987.1 Base 987.1 S 987.2 Base 987.2 S 981 S All cars tested were manual transmission. This entire post assumes you're driving a stick shift version, and if you're going PDK, you can probably ignore this. I'll leave aside the 911s for the purposes of this, because it really is a different car, and focus on the Caymans, but if anyone's curious about why I went the direction I did, I'll answer below. The results were that the base 987.1 was simply too slow, once the others had been driven. The 987.2 base dealt with some of that power issue, but it still felt like too much work to get up to speed. But the real issue with the base car is the shifter. The 5 speed manual is CONSIDERABLY worse than any of the other cars tested. It's a dealbreaker. So, to be frank, the only reason to buy a base Cayman is to spend less money. What about the different generations? The 987.1 S was fine, but the sound difference and HP gain to the 987.2 S was noticeable. Either car would have worked for me, and I ended up with my 987.2 S because I got a good price on a fairly low mileage one with excellent service history, and as a result felt the extra $5k I paid was worth the updates and the peace of mind over the IMS issue (which, I gather, has been significantly overblown even in the 996 911 and should not be worth much). The 981 is clearly a great car, and the cabin experience just feels much more premium than either 987 car. I also prefer the looks, and it's not really close. But once you're going, I didn't feel the driving experience warranted the additional cost. This was particularly the case because I'm just not a fan of electronic steering. The degree to which this matters to anyone is, of course, a matter of personal taste, and the 981's electronic rack is actually not bad as those things go, but going from one to the other, it feels artificial for me. That said, I prefer manual steering to anything else, so I'm out of the mainstream on that. The verdict? The bargain car is either 987 S. If you want to save a few thousand dollars, get a 987.1 with a good service history. They are still selling for very reasonable prices on the used market, given what you're getting. But please, don't follow this video's advice and step down to the base car. It's an enormous difference that cannot be saved by the lower price if you're buying this as a driver's car.

I would always go for low spec S over high spec base. Its a sports car so extra options means little for me. The only exception PASM. The cayman has a chassis that can handle a lot of power even more than the 987’s 295hp S. I Agree with daily driving comment for the base model, but would recommend taking cayman to the track, thats where you really appreciate what a porsche sports car is all about, and at the track its S all day long for me it runs rings around a base cayman and 996/997 911. Having said that I still prefer the 911, for the same reason people buy a Porsche over other makes its not just outright pace its engagement, cayman/boxster may handle better but thats not engagement... those who have know.

If your care about performance, the Cayman S is alot better. The brakes are better. The hp potential is much higher. The suspension is stiffer. The wheels are nicer. He is wrong. $6000 will not give you a Cayman S. The mods are aweful for the 2.7L... The 3.4L will simply get 15hp from some $500 headers. If you ever want to go fast, don't get a 2.7L.
