I also think school should teach teens some of the signs of toxic/abusive/coercive relationships because so many teens/young adults become involved in such relationships without even realising that its not normal/healthy

At school we could choose a subject called "Consumer Studies" or it's also called "Home Economics" - it was probably one of the most useful classes I had! We learnt about household budgeting, taxes, healthy eating habits and what food has what vitamins and minerals - and how much of those we need on the daily, COOKING (we had to do practical exams where we have to physically cook things within a time limit, granted it was a generous time limit). It included both baking and cooking and everyone who took that class was so popular because we'd have so much extra food from our cooking classes and we'd give food away or trade it for other things! We also learnt about fashion, a very basic history of fashion. What a timeless piece is, and the difference between a fad and trend. We even learnt a bit about home decor, like how to hang up a painting or choosing wall colours for different rooms. Honestly it was so fun. In our final exam we were given an example of a household, with a gross salary. We had to calculate the net salary and write up a budget based on their needs, as well as plan out a shopping list and meal plans based off of what would benefit them most. It was very basic but it REALLY helped. Even today as a 27 year-old, I use this information on the daily! I STILL use many of the cooking and baking recipes I learnt from this class. We also learnt our basic rights as a consumer as well as how mortgages and loans work! I could also choose another subject called "Business Studies" where we leant about our national employment acts. The rights as an employee and an employer. We went through real employment contracts. We also learnt all the different types of companies and how to start a business and how to register one. We learnt about tax in business, as well as how to mediate in the working environment and how to manage conflict. We learnt so much more too. We also had a subject called "Economics" which I didn't do but that was also very useful especially if you planned on going into a relevant field, as well as "Accounting". I hated accounting so I didn't choose it haha. We also had two different options for math subjects. One was the normal "Mathematics" which was more "advanced" for if you wanted to go into a field that required it. I didn't like maths and didn't feel like I needed to learn calculus and all that stuff (I planned on pursuing design and now I'm a UI/UX designer!), so I took the other option which was "Maths Literacy" which was so much more relevant to me. I learnt how to calculate simple and compound interest, and pretty much any calculation that you would actually use in the real world. The questions we were given were scenarios based off real life, and it was much easier and much more relevant. We could also optionally take first aid classes. You had to pay extra for those but you could take the annual exams for them and be certified in first aid! I personally, luckily, haven't used it and I haven't kept up with the annual exams, but I think that information is good to know. Edit: We also had a compulsory class called Life Orientation, which covered everything from STDs, Sex Ed, marriage and divorce, how to ballroom dance (???), the dangers of sugar daddies, rape (although... I personally felt our textbooks were very unhelpful and kind of sexist in that sense), friendships, depression and suicide, family things, grief, pregnancy. It wasn't counselling, but it was more the steps to take when tackling various issues and some random other stuff. Some of it was very outdated and unhelpful, but some of it was very helpful. Strangely enough our sex ed was really good! When they talked about rape though it came across as extremely victim-blaming :( I'll never forget their one question. It was a scenario where an underage girl snuck out of her house and went to a house party and got drunk, then was locked in a room and got raped. The question afterwards was "What could she have done to prevent this from happening?" UGH!

They always make discussions so much fun! I think about all of these points daily and I agree completely. I wish all countries would prepare us for adulthood. Someone once told me that the point of adulthood was to be thrown into society and just learn to be on your own. I don’t think that’s the point at all!!

Hi! I'm from Mexico and when I was in primary (elementary) school, like when I was 10-11 years old, they taught us about periods, I remember. In highschool we have the oportunity to join a special class (depending on the school, but most of schools have it) to "prepare" you in what you'll chose to study in universtity, things like business administration, nutrition, laws, etc. So, it's super intriguing to me how different the school systems are. Loveee you both so much!!

This video just makes me so excited to homeschool my kids one day to teach them more life skills and focus on their interests. So many unnecessary things are taught in school and so much of it is just to teach you to obey. There’s so much busywork when they could be teaching you about real life.

So I’m older and I’ve been out of school quite a while. Plus, America is huge and school curriculums can differ greatly from state to state. But when I was growing up home economics in year 7 and woodshop year 8 were required courses for all students (no matter gender or preference). Home economics taught basic cooking/ sewing skills. Woodshop taught basic home repair. And driver’s education was a required high school course. And we had to learn to fill out checks in a checking book (back before the Internet) and I had a 5th grade class that made us pretend play the stock market for a year. 😂 Also I was in a city but I heard that in the country there was basic gardening/ growing in elementary school. And even in the city we had a few years of insect/ animal births. Like we raised caterpillars until they turned into butterflies and hatched baby ducks in an incubator. Now when my older sister was in the same school district seven years earlier, grade 8 had a basic computer coding requirement and drivers Ed also included basic car maintenance (like changing tires and oil). But these were gone or changed to electives by the time I came along. I’m really not sure how much these classes or kinds of classes still exist but the intention to be more practical was there.

My step son was in highschool through the pandemic and graduated this past summer without EVER writing an exam. These kids were not set up for university at all. I dont know how any of them will come around. But my partner and i spend a LOT of time setting the kids up for real life and teaching them the nitty gritties of life. So at least real life shouldnt surprise them too much.

I’m looking into getting hello fresh here in LA, as I spend like $100 a week on not that much food, even when there’s offers on. I love a quick microwave meal or something on toast in the week as I’m usually too tired from work to properly cook or get ingredients from the shops, but unless I remember to get veg to dip in hummus, my diet is so beige atm! I also hate wasting food so if I do make a chilli or fajita mix at the weekend, I’m basically eating that for a week plus and it gets boring after a while. And I live in a flat share so there’s only so much room in the freezer to freeze batches

Some things should be taught be schools, some things by parents. Domestic things like cooking should be taught by oarents, taxes and employment stuff by school. Schools literally exist to educate our kids, the problem is what they decide to teach. Parents jobs are to house and feed and love their kids.

Omg, I'm adding another comment. I have so much to say today haha. At school to teach us about how difficult having a baby is, for Life Orientation class when we were 16 we had the "butternut project" where we had to find the biggest butternut we could find and pretend it was our baby and had to carry it around EVERYWHERE (we actually had to have a blanket and everything) and if we couldn't we had to pay someone to "babysit". We had to write a report on the experience as well as how much the overall cost is. I think it was to help prevent teenage pregnancies lol. We actually had to phone hospitals and find out how much birth is, calculate how much baby food and diapers cost per month, etc. We also had to volunteer at an orphanage for a day. The only thing is, ONLY THE GIRLS HAD TO DO IT. The guys didn't. I think they still had to do the report but excluded the butternut thing. It was so unfair and so sexist. I did learn a lot though and it put me off wanting a baby forever. I still can't fathom having one. I swear that project scarred me lmao. If I want a child I'd adopt, especially after seeing the orphanages, and also my best friend grew up in one. We also watched a live birth video in Biology and that also scarred me mentally to no end.
@JessieB98
@JessieB98 10 месяцев назад
Oh my god no way? Wow! We never had anything like that nor have I ever heard of a school doing such a thing! I think it’s a really good idea but the boys should have to do the exact same project 😩 that’s crazy that it was only the girls 😭 I can definitely see how watching a live birth when young would be traumatising, I feel that’s a step too far 😭
@Katerina_Alexandra
@Katerina_Alexandra 9 месяцев назад
I live in South Africa and it's a subject most schools offer (even government schools)! But yes I agree the boys should also have done that project too lmao it was so unfair. I love the idea of kids and teens learning about these things, but I am extremely wary of putting more power in the hands of the System. If anything, perhaps the parents should be coached on how and what to teach their kids. Then, the children are getting the information but in the way the parent wants. I think it would put more emphasis on parents taking more responsibility for raising adults. (Also, the parents should get paid leave for taking the coaching sessions!!!)

I think my mum needs a lesson in ‘how to use Google maps’. She got off a bus stop too late coming to my LA apartment when she was visiting. And LA is kind of like New York and is on a grid, and not a house on the edge of a village after some winding country lanes with no phone signal that we get back home in England. She called me in a huff, saying the app was confusing. So I said, what can you see around you? I meant street signs. She said a church. Luckily I knew the church she meant. So I said, can you see such and such street. She said yes. So I told her she needed to go past that street, two more streets and turn right up my street. She complained ‘oh I was trying to spot those big satellite dishes at the end of your road’ 🤦🏼‍♀️. She relies on the app or the sat nav directing her a bit too much to the point she doesn’t think to look AT THE ACTUAL MAP!!!

All these things should be taught in families, not in schools. How did you both make it to adulthood without knowing this stuff, especially learning to drive etc? It's literally my job as a parent to teach my kids basic life skills, that started at birth and will continue until they move out. I couldn't not equip them for the real world.

@@khia7676stop insulting my parents for one 🙈 I’m not pinning stuff on teachers. I’m talking about curriculum design. I studied this at uni. Was in the home of the president of Ireland only yesterday where he and his wife insisted breastfeeding should be taught in schools. There’s consensus on this because not everyone has super involved parents many parents have to work as ours did. So then it’s being left with childcare, in your eyes? I have been driving for a year as my followers know and there was a major reason I put off learning for a long time but now desperately I had classes in driving rather than religion (during which we just did art/watched movies)
@lilyblake5409
@lilyblake5409 10 месяцев назад
@@khia7676 I think the issue here is a lot of kids don’t have parents around to always teach these skills. This is from a United States perspective in the Midwest states: there are many families with divorced parents, single parents, no parents at all, and parents who are constantly busy. There just isn’t enough time, therefore schools should take the advantage of teaching teenagers important lessons for adulthood. There were a lot of classes at my school that didn’t have to be enforced. A LOT. there could be many other useful classes for teaching kids and teenagers these skills and information. And I will say, a lot of these basic skills WERE taught in schools decades ago in the United States. They are no longer included, only one can wonder why. I agree that parents should teach their children these skills, but we can’t rely on that. Education on adulthood is still education in my opinion and it would be for the public good! The amount of people I know that are my age (20), don’t know what to do. This just shows that many are almost thrown into adulthood. I’m being serious when I say many others have parents who tell them to figure it out like “they did.” Not everyone has fair parents, and not all know basic skills. This is a very modern issue in my opinion since most kids are googling things they don’t understand and are getting a lot of misinformation. We should want to teach kids these things instead of relying on them to figure it out by googling it. (For reference, my past schools got rid of their libraries and use computers for everything, as well as give computers to children to use at home and school).
@melaniemurphyofficial
@melaniemurphyofficial 10 месяцев назад
@@khia7676I didn’t say I ‘don’t have’ these life skills. We’re just joking about how much learning there is to be done when you get older with zero bases covered in secondary school. I mean, I really don’t think parents EVER sit their kids down to go through contraception options in depth…there are a million things we could do with learning about in school that would greatly benefit us instead of, well, a whole lot of it. Not everyone chooses subjects like home economics (I didn’t!)…so much change needed to the school system imo 🤷🏻‍♀️ I speak with teachers ALL the time regarding online literacy for teens etc. My first book was featured on an English exam paper, and I’ve done loads of guest lectures over the past six years.
