I was born in the 90's and grew on the early 00's toonami and adult swim anime blocks. My opinion is that we didn't need more FLCL because it was so perfect already. I think the vibe is the hardest thing to recreate and shouldn't be handled lightly. Kyousougiga got pretty stinkin' close to that feeling. Great video and we should always expect more from the things we care about!

OG FLCL is like an oil painting. It was made out of pure love, artistry, and meaning.

I was 12 when FLCL came out. I had just come home from living in an orphanage in Atlanta and so desperately wanted to escape life and seek adventure. This show hit hard for me and helped me through some dark shit. I would fall asleep to these episodes every night for years. It’s a shame that they are trying to recapture that magic in a bottle. It’s my favorite anime of all time. Also The Pillows are fucking great!

I would love to see something like FLCL 30 years later and Noata has grown, but he's still kinda hung up on Haruko in a lot of ways that bleed into his "normal" life; like he's a salaryman or small business owner, but he's also an artist or musician in his spare time. Then someone who may or may not be Haruko shows up and he has to do the whole "refusing the hero's jouney" dance before diving into some cool one-off vinettes about the actual space pirate stuff they keep hinting at that would lead him to actually picking his own path as an adult. I'd also like to see how Mamimi turned out, like maybe she's the catalyst because she shows up to photograph his band for a magazine or something. Also, Pillows should do the soundtrack. 😁

You raise a good point that the OG FLCL surpasses “anime” status and is just objectively a good story. They have some anime tropes but they manage to just have fun with it and tell a story rather than actually making it about transformations and power-ups. It’s just a zany story about a zany alien than comes to town and shakes up this uptight kid’s life. “Let Fooly Cooly Die” Amen. Sometimes you just get it right the first time.

This generation needs a new FLCL. And by that I don't mean the "brand" FLCL, but a brand new story about coming of age and sex in the Zoomer generation. The idea of a young boy and a sexual awakening by an older woman doesn't even make sense anymore because it would be "gross" to young viewers who have a very specific allowed age bracket that people can be attracted to each other (I think it's like one or two years). I know it sounds like I'm making fun of them (and I am) but I'm dead serious. I'm a 40 year old man, and I got to grow up loving FLCL and I think a lot of Millenials did too. It's our story though, about coming of age in a certain era. Things are different now. The culture is more conservative. Would a 16 year old now care about a Vespa? Lol. There are a lot of rules about sex and love. Make a show about that, sexual identity, gender identity, etc. Those are the topics that matter to young people. Make a new one. Get some hot young artists and risk-taking writers and set them lose. Give it a soundtrack that will be huge for young people, not fossils like me who love the Pillows.

I miss when FLCL was about Something. Its perfectly reflected the time in your life just before growing up. But I feel for many of us, thats also probably when we first saw it which would have strengthened our connection to it. フリクリ, was never supposed to be more it was always supposed to be a flash in the pan over before it started wish I had more show. I feel like I'm in the minority that really enjoyed FLCL Progressive and Alternative. They don't live up to the original FLCL but they were very entertaining as their own stand alone stories, especially FLCL Alternative which was my favorite of the two. Idk how the new one is going to be but even if it's bad, it doesn't take away from the original story. At this point it just feels like an anthology franchise which I'm OK with.

Lazarus directed by Shinichirō Watanabe is gonna be 8 1 hour episodes so it should be a lot of content. Nice video i agree with you FLCL could never really get a sequel just because of how perfect it is. Where it ends and how open ended it is really is important to the theme of og FLCL.

Gonna take a jump and say FLCL and it's sequels aren't really sequels. It's supposed to be the same story basically told over and over but in a different time or style.

I'm sorry to admit that I haven't finished the video, but from what I understand you haven't finished watching either Prog or Alt, and while I wouldn't recommend you to finish Prog, I would argue that it's worth a try to finish Alt. In the video you said that Alt took the themes of S1 and recontextualizes it from another perspective, in your opinion leading it to be too much of the same. But honestly I don't see any better way to create a sequel to FLCL. The core of FLCL, being about the struggles of maturing, is extremely flexible in that there are so many ways that people experience this. FLCL S1 was about a boy that desperately wanted to be an adult and ironically making exactly that harder to achieve, while Alt was about a girl that was afraid of change and therefore also of growing up, which was what held her maturity back. Thematically Alt is the same but the content is different enough to justify its existence. As for being worth the watch, Alt suffers from the fact that the most impactful moments only happen at the very end of the series, while the earlier content is nothing more but passable, even though still necessary for the later moments to have their impact. Usually I wouldn't use this argument, but seeing that it's only 6 episodes long I definitely do think it's worth sitting through the lesser parts of Alt.

when i first picked flcl on anime watching websites i didnt bring myself to watch the other shows for some reason, it was a blessing in disguise it seems cos id kill to have a re-experience of the original show

3:53 If any yall curious on the history lesson I'll put it here. Gainax mismanagement had everyone jump ship. People most notable for making Gurren Lagann left to make Trigger. While Anno left to make Studio Khara. When he made Khara he actually didn't own the rights to Neon Genesis Evangelion. He did a bit of a loophole however and negotiated doing a remake, which that he could atleast own. Hence why 'Rebuild' came to be. Fast forward, Gainax is basically dead and is liquidating all it's assets. Studio Khara is able to finally buy the full rights to Evangelion. However, Gainax upped the price of FLCL... Khara wasn't able to justify the price, and Production IG bought it instead. ... Why Adult Swim and Production IG are pumping out 4 seasons.... nostalgia? justifying the expensive price it took to buy the IP in the first place? we may never know

This is just my opinion, but in my opinion. Let them create whatever they want to create. I don't know why people assist on having a series die just because it's subpar compared to the original. People said that we don't need a sequel and talked about it as if it's killing the First, Murdering it to some degree.. That's just in your head, The original is always going to be there... it's never gonna leave. We can always enjoy and go back to it. Maybe it's from an artistic point of view, but let it continue I view it as a different anime anyway, It's not the same. But most importantly. It doesn't devalue how special the original was. This is a testament or statement by how specit really is.

The original FLCL is a masterpiece. Progressive and Alternative, despite a few of its flaws, I liked them (as I thought it talked about early, mid and late adolescence). First seeing FLCL Grunge, watching the animation and the story that's honestly forgettable for a few minutes, I already hated it.

Man, saying "I could hang any frame from FLCL on a wall" is so true It's very rare that you get something that has every artist rolling at max speed but it happened then FLCL sequels could've worked. I mean, they made a sequel to Psycho, The Godfather, and 2001: A Space Odyssey, so anything's possible. But it only would've worked with people who know why the original worked or at LEAST could write a good story with similar themes. It's like The Simpsons, right? I don't think many people will say that the seasons from lets say 5 years ago are better than the ones from 30 years ago but they're generally at LEAST exploring different angles, storylines, and character dynamics. Whenever they let a good writer and director take the helm, they may even get something that gets to the quality of the "golden age" but they have to be different, like you said. Even my low standards for FLCL Progressive were shattered to dust when I watched it, so if Shoegaze ends up even having a SLIGHTLY different angle, it'll blow my fucking mind.

I honestly didn’t mind the idea of making more FLCL. Yes, there is no way anything they make could even come close to the original, but like everything popular, people are going to try. FLCL was like catching lightning in a bottle. All the elements pretty much lined up perfectly to make a masterpiece. Is it impossible to catch that lightning in a bottle again? No, but your chances are slim to none. Still, as I said, people always want more of popular stuff like this, and there is always going to be someone who thinks they can recapture the magic of the original. So when Progressive and Alternative were announced, I wasn’t really pissed. Now fast forward to the present, and I’ve just seen the trailer for FLCL Grunge, and I’m fucking horrified. Trying to build on and recapture the magic of the original is one thing, but THIS!? What the hell is this ugly CG animation? Why CG animation? At least previous attempts kept a 2D art style similar to the original. And rock people? Again, why? There’s a difference between trying and failing to capture the magic of the original and just releasing whatever cheap shit with a familiar title will hopefully net you a few bucks. The animation doesn’t even look finished! It looks like some cheap home made stuff from an amateur animator created for a project, and not a very good one, either.

FLCL these days is the epitome of corporate greed taking, what was otherwise originally-perfect, media in order to recycle it ad nauseam so they fill their pockets using the nostalgia of the working class. FLCL felt real, grounded, but the "sequels" had no soul. I just HOPE there's an underlying message that we're all missing, but at the age of 22 I'm highkey jaded.

I actually don't mind what they're doing with FLCL, the original was created with the goal of being experimental, taking the young talent at Gainax and I.G and giving them the opportunity to create something personal and unique within 6 episodes to showcase their talent. That is still the case to this day. Each season they release 2 versions, made by fairly new or unknown animation studios. As long as they keep being experimental with FLCL's IP I will be happy no matter the quality of the end result. Of course they're never going to hit the same success as the original, but at least they aren't going to MAPPA etc and betraying what the original stood for.

I might be late, but imo the "best FLCL sequel" would be Sonny Boy, it's a great anime also about growing up, beautifully crafted in the same ideas, and has an amazing weird world built just like FLCL but still original on it's on. I'm not comparing both, since there's no comparison, but still similar messages in different experiences, what every fan of FLCL deserves and wants. If anyone has seen Sonny Boy feel free to share your experience with it. And if not, go see it on your own, you probably won't dislike it.

FLCL is a small and content gimmick show that's over and done with. It's like an artsy emotional show but they tried giving it lore and shit like it's a Shonen.

I think a proper way to handle the FLCL franchise is the honor the first season from 2000 Rest. There's no need to continue on the franchise, especially how it well the story concluded.

I really enjoyed the sci fi and action elements of fooly cooly. The issue with these other fooly coolys is that theres no real story they just tried to do flcl over again with different characters and situations. I agree with you.

It's a good story but the older style of animation is part of what made the original so special and cool. The first one was more grunge than FLCL ironically.

I feel like FLCL's subsequent installments are a masterclass is every mistake you can make in continuing a series past the first. At no point does it feel like they really built on the original vision. They either bastardize the property. It's all fanfic junk. The soundtrack piece is really frustrating because FLCL had such an inspired soundtrack... and instead of taking the essence of that and coming up with a new incredible iteration... they just put the same fucking sound track. I'm so passionate about how badly this has been done that I could convince myself that it's my life's purpose to do it right lmao

I’m sad to say I was one of the folks that actually wanted the flcl sequels. I didn’t think they’d go this route though. The art isn’t the same, the ANIMATION isn’t the same, the vibe feels stale, recycled, and diluted. It’s too stiff. Too… safe. OG flcl was risky as hell. The creators did what they wanted, and they didn’t try to please the audience. They just wanted to make something cool for the world to see. I realize now we didn’t need more FLCL. It was fine just the way it was. 6 episodes was plenty. We just wanted to feel that moment again from when we first saw it.

There is enough anime out there that we can afford a few sequels, prequels, and remakes. Plus flcl went like 10 years without any attention after the first one. I think it's fine to expand on the universe a little at this point. I'm just happy there will be more music to listen to.

in the defense of the new anime, FLCL has always been a Toonami staple so creating new media for that crowd will keep the discussion alive for that crowd. Never grew up with toonami and never gonna watch these new projects but I can at least understand why an audience that has been watching reruns of FLCL for over 20 years would want something new even if the original creators aren't involved at all

I'm tired of them abusing our nostalgia for a buck. While this isn't exactly the same, I am somewhat glad Sega kinda stopped touching it because weren't ambitious and they know they wouldn't really do it justice. However, even if they aren't apart of the original source material, Team Reptile seems to understand the soul of it with similar ambition with Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. This is wishful thinking though. But you're right. They need the soul if the show, but their own thing.

Out of all the "sequels" i think FLCL Alternative catches the wrong kind of hate. Ive always seen Alternative as a retelling of FLCL in a more modern age from a female perspective, and not as a sequel to the original.
