In this video, I head up to Derwent Edge in search of a winter wild camp with my Vango Banshee 300 and OEX Leviathan 900 sleeping bag. The afternoon views were spectacular and snow was forecast throughout the evening and night. This was a cold, winter awesome camp which gave me an opportunity to test the limits of my gear. Thanks for watching!

You're spot on when you say it's a journey with your gear. Can't get it all right the first time and definitely need to test things out to find what suits you. The banshee does definitely suck the cold up from the floor so best thing is an extra layer as banshee footprints are like hens teeth. I definitely prefer headroom over coffin style.

When I camp in freezing temperatures I make sure my tent is zipped up as you don’t want ice freezing inside because by the time you are up in morning the condensation will be brutal. If I’m outside it stays zipped up all the time end off.

You're a nice calm man and very easy to watch. I've wildcamped for nearly 30 year now and it's like anything else, you grow into it. The only couple of things I would say is invest in a really good sleep mat and a decent quality tent with enough head hight to sit up in. Really enjoyed this though, I'm from Sheffield and where you parked at cut-throat bridge is only a 20 minute drive and I've been on derwent edge many times. On a clear day from back tor you can see York minster ( 60ish) mile away.

Nice video Gav, makes me long for the days when I could do this sort of thing all the time. When I started my channel I envisaged doing more videos like this, but old age had caught up with me, and I didn't have the video capability either. Back when I was fit and had all the gear but there were no good quality lightweight cameras to shoot video. I love that area, but agree about the midges in summer! I bought most of my winter gear for Himalayan trips in the late 1980s and early 90s, so it is very different to modern kit, but still excellent, just not very light or compact. My record low for a camp is -26C, but my bag was rated to -26C so I was toasty :)
@HikingForHealth1
@HikingForHealth1 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching. Wow -26. That is low! I do wish I had started the YT channel earlier but no time like the present I guess. I spent a solid hour or two last night watching Lincoln transform from the past to the present. I found the videos great to watch! Thanks for sharing. All the best!

@@HikingForHealth1 Well don't get me started! I'd always wanted to go to the Himalaya, and thought that a trek to Everest basecamp would get it out of my system, but quite the opposite happened. I was actually frustrated by the basecamp trip, even though we climbed three "small" peaks" around 18,000', and I went back twice to climb real mountains at around 20,000', all amazing trips. I definitely recommend it at least once

Hi Gav, what a great camp and well filmed. I only have one Matt well 2 actually as still have my old Thermarest that is warm but only 10mm thick so a bit uncomfortable. No I still use my uberlite which has a very low warm value but in winter I put a foam Matt on top not underneath as it’s the air in the Matt that gets cold so your not lying on that but on the warm foam. So still have the comfort of my thick air mattress. Works for me Gav as I can’t afford to have too much kit. Also still have my foam as you never know you might get a puncture which did happen to me in winter. Blimey everything looked so beautiful in the snow. ATB 🏕️

Cheers Dave, really like the look of the Big Agnes sl rapide. R value of 4.8 I think. I’ll try that next time and put the foil mat on top of the blow up mat. Just thought I’d be sliding all over the place 😂 It was fantastic in the morning. What would have made it perfect would have been the mist dropping to show a cracking inversion. Then it would have been 10/10. Thanks for watching Dave. All the best.

@@HikingForHealth1 the bag or pad? The pad was from ultralight outdoor gear, £180, expensive, but not as as expensive as a regular sized thermarest neo air X lite NXT that isn't quite as warm. They only got them in last week. The rab ascent 700 I got years ago when I worked at go outdoors. I've just got a new bag, it's a 3 season sierra designs cloud 20, it's really comfortable for front sleepers like me, and it's zipperless, it's like a hybrid of wide mummy bag and quilt, I can't wait to try it out. Hi there Cant you put one of your reflective mats directly under you and one on the floor,theyre meant to reflect body heat so id put one in your sleeping bag or under it. Foil has no insulating value at all. Don't be taken in by all the "reflects heat" nonsense. The body loses most heat by conduction and convection and you need plenty of insulation under you to reduce the conduction, because your sleeping bag gets compressed and offers very little in the way of insulation, so investing in a good sleeping mat is essential! Some years ago, the RAF Mountain Rescue group tested "space blankets" against plain poly bags and the poly bags were way more efficient
