Truth! I was going to by a TRD CAI then I did some research. A SR5 already has a stock CAI. In fact it is a true CAI. Where most after market CAI seal a box in the engine compartment. Toyota’s filter housing draws air from the fender compartment. I purchased the air flow accelerator from my local Toyota dealer and a K&N air filter. It is easy to install, but removing the filter housing is a must. Make sure and save the seal from the paper filter. Push the fluted end all the way into the fender. The ridge that is right of the fluted end has to be pushed in or it will not seal properly. Total cost $62.

Thanks I just did this to my 2016 scion tc after watching this video and then researched and found a forum on the tc as well about the same thing . Bought the trd flow accelerator and bought the trd air box for the looks. I already had the aem performance filter. And man it worked. I can feel the difference in performance and sounds great and spent around 130 bucks instead of 400. Thank you man!

Love the honesty. I did notice they were pretty much the same part. Stock vs TRD with the biggest difference being the air filter. I switched to a k&n air filter as I did in all my cars in the past and have great results. I just save the paper filter and toss it in when I clean the k&n until it’s ready to go.

A K&N inside the stock air box is best option. There’s a group that tests odd things on a chassis dyno, they found that K&N or similar filter inside stock air box produces most hp and it’s really only a minimal gain,

@ciscoprog

I know this is from 11 months ago but does the sway bar negatively affect the off road manners? I've heard that it does. While it is good for on road the off road driving can cause problems like debris getting stuck and some suspension travel issues. That is only what I've read aka anecdotal.
@TundraDude34
@TundraDude34 7 лет назад

I just bought the K&N filter for my stock air box. Blew compressed air through a brand stock air filter and the brand new K&N and could feel the big difference in the less restricted airflow.
@TundraDude34

+Jim Underwood enjoy it!
@rem700longunner
@rem700longunner 7 лет назад
Understand that your "less restricted airflow" means less filtration as well. Engine oil silica levels are always higher when running these oiled filter media. That's backed up by thousands of miles of Blackstone Labs oil analyses. Further, simply bolting on an intake with a different flow design or a filter with a different media doesn't do SQUAT to change horsepower, gas mileage, throttle response or anything else. Period. Air STILL has to flow through the throttle body, through the intake runners, through the cylinders, through the exhaust manifolds/headers, through the catalytic converters, through the muffler, and through the rest of the exhaust piping. You can attach a garden hose to a fire hose but it isn't going to increase the flow through the garden hose. Further, the Toyota ECU's A/F mixture and timing maps are going to control air flow. It reads data from its suite of sensors and adjusts back to programmed equilibrium. You simply can't cheat the ECU with bolt on components. These "cold air intakes" are just a way to separate you from your money. Advice? Put it aside for gas. Don't believe me? Go here, do a search for "cold air intakes", and start reading real world results: www.tundrasolutions.com/

Hey Tundra Dude, Wes here again. I want to say thanks for this video. I really wanted to put a cold air intake on, but just couldn't justify paying $400 for the Whole TRD set up. Thats the way I am, I think it comes from growing up on a dairy farm, when we always looked for the cheapest way to do things. Thays why I wont buy the TRD dual exhaust set up, I will piece it together my way lol. So yes I ordered the $15 air intake accelerator and the $65 air filter. I cant wait to hear it with the peddle commander hooked up. The commander will get it to really talking. Thanks
@samuelrosas2147

Best way to find out if this theory is correct is dyno the truck with trd cold air intake and with out. Then try the k & n filter with the stock air box amd the accelerator.

I did this upgrade to my 2013 Sequoia, cost me a total of about 62 dollars. The TRD intake system costs best I've seen is about 375 dollars. and yes the air flow accelerator does not fit exactly the same, though there is a good seal on my car. As long as the tabs connect I believe this works fine as far as more power, I don't really know! Great Tip, thanks!

I’ve had several cold air intakes on different vehicles, I don’t see any notable difference, there is the sound, but the overall gain is minimal at best, would suggest spending hard earned money on other items that have more effect on mpg, horsepower, or positive functionality jmo

Another trick is to cut out the fabric filter media from the upper air box assembly, also...both resonators can be removed, cork the openings with just about anything, including spray paint can tops. You will need to reattach the fuel rail vacuum line, fittings found at Home Depot.

The best part about the Tundra is that it will last a very long time, which will save u money in the long run 👍🏼 When I do alot of highway driving, i usually hover around 18 mpg

Hey TundraDude, great videos, watched 'em all! I've got a 2016 CM TRD that I've put a TRD intake on recently. I had a pretty bad whistle with mine so I ordered the basket-free throttle body gasket that you did a video on. It seems it has just changed what range the whistle happens, but I still get a whistle, does yours still whistle as well? What else should I look at to get it to stop completely? The bigger question I wanted to ask you though is about how oily the TRD filter comes. I noticed that after driving about 1000mi with the new filter and stock basket gasket, when I went to remove it the basket had a good oil film on it (presumably from the excess air filter oil). I would have to believe that the MAF sensor probably has a good coating of oil on it at this point too. Do you think it would be a reasonable idea to pull the sensor out and spray it down with some cleaner? Also, do you happen to know, is the TRD intake tube a larger diameter than stock? I gave my stock one away and I can't double check now. Thanks for your time if you get a chance to respond, appreciate it!
@TundraDude34
@TundraDude34 8 лет назад
+10 Gauge hey man, I appreciate you watching all the videos! For my truck, the whistle was completely gone after i changed the gasket. As far as the filter goes, mine was oily, but nothing crazy. If I were you, i would contact TRD and see if they will send you a replacement filter. Maybe the one you got ended up with too much oil somehow. Ive seen weirder things happen lol. I dont have my stock intake tube anymore either but im almost 100% the tube is the same diameter. The top part of the air box is larger then stock for more volume but everything else looks the same. Anyway, let me know how everything goes and thanks again for watching 👍🏼

Hello TD34 I am new to this mod stuff have had a Tundra for only a year and a half. Not sure I get how to do this from the video although I understand the concept. I see where to place he airflow separator, does the air filter go inside the regular box, so that it looks stock when finished? AS I mentioned I am pretty much of a novice at this. hi, my small questions - i didn't get it - if you buy trd pro version - does it comes with accelerator and fancy red filter box(with TRD logo on it) and tubing - or it comes with like a regular (say SR5) - no accelerator, regular black box and tubing? and what's about milage? have you noticed any changes after installing filter or the whole system (i didn't quite get what did you install finally) tnx in advance! like your videos and i'm about to order 2017 white double cab trd pro next weekend)
@TundraDude34
@TundraDude34 7 лет назад
+Dennis V Hey Dennis, thanks for watching! It comes with the regular black box and tubing, no accelerator. When you buy the TRD system, it comes with the accelerator, bigger upper air box with TRD written on it, TRD oiled air filter and tubing. I really saw mileage gains when on the highway but overall my mpg is up. It makes the engine a bit louder and also helps with throttle response. To avoid a potential whistle, I suggest you change out the honey comb throttle body gasket to the hollow one Toyota offers. You can find the part number for that on my "intake whistle" video.

it works well with injectors(15% more flow)catback and bullyD tune. Dyno doesnt lie:) Not blower of coarse,but my tundra runs on regular for towing and has around 440 hp towing gets to see only higher torque not hp because of rev regimes but when i go fishing or green light start i can feel it How double cab picking up Mark knows,he has video

Ok. Is having the modular tube make a difference in the sound. I have done the TRD Pro filter and air accelerator already. Noticed an not better throttle and mileage, but am looking for the growl that normally goes with it.
@kylerthekiller_8063
@kylerthekiller_8063 4 года назад
Mikey Doo! K&N makes a part (57-9036) which is basically just a tube with smoother airflow between the stock airbox and the throttle body. I think if you combine it with the TRD airflow accelerator and filter, you basically have the TRD CAI just without the red aesthetics.

How you doing I have a question I have a 2017 tundra trd pro with the regular black box that already connects to hole in the fender. Is that the same thing as the trd accelerator? If not what's the difference and how do you install? I'm curious to do this with another filter. Sorry just a little confused
@TundraDude34
@TundraDude34 7 лет назад
+Chris Cahuenas the one that comes on the truck isnt the Accelerator. The accelerator is rubber and the shape of It supposedly draw air more efficiently. To install, u have to remove the air intake. You plan on doing the air Accelerator and performance filter of full intake system upgrade?
@Chrisc0121
@Chrisc0121 7 лет назад
TundraDude34 oh ok I see what you are saying now I understand what the piece does. Do you feel like it makes a difference? I was just thinking of putting the accelerator with a performance filter do you know if the Trd cone filter fits in the stock box? Not looking to spend so much on a aftermarket or trd cai if I can basically get the same with just doing those mods. Does it sound a little more aggressive if I do that mod?
@TundraDude34
@TundraDude34 7 лет назад
+Chris Cahuenas the Trd Filter offered is actually the panel filter. Yes, it will add a bit of noise to the engine bay (nothing crazy)
@jko0526
