Drake is not a cultural appropriator due to the fact that Caribbean culture is heavily intertwined with black culture in Toronto. Making Dancehall music is paying homage to all of the people of Caribbean descent who populate Toronto. Its not a fad or a trend, Dancehall is all you hear in most urban Toronto clubs. Drake has had dancehall inspirations in his music since his debut album. If anything he is the reason we are seeing Dancehall's influence so frequently throughout mainstream pop.

As far as the Cardi B and Nicki Minaj comment I think it has to do a lot with how similar they are. They sound similar. They rap similar. They even have a similar appearance and it comes off like Cardi B is emulating Nicki so that's why it seems like they can't coexist. Not just that they are both female rappers.

I think the main problem with the "argument" in that twitter-comment was that it boiled all possible criticism down to "not getting" an artist because you are/aren't part of (insert certain demographic here) - which is always a very weak defense, especially against intellectual criticism (aka criticism that actually breaks down the quality of art into different categories and tries to judge them as objectively as possible).

When you're talking about the whole Cardi B vs. Nicki Minaj beef, I'm reminded that this is not merely a rap phenomenon. About fifteen years ago it seemed like Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton were being pitted against each other (see, for example, the music video for Carlton's "Pretty Baby"), even though one could easily imagine both of those singers sitting down at the bar together and joking about the ridiculousness of the music industry together and then cutting some tracks together for their latest indie release. It seems as if women artists are often pitted against each other like there's only slot for successful women artists of various kinds.

I never understood (some) men disliking female music. For instance I love old school rock, so I have in my playlists bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones... and ABBA. Whenever people ask me why I love such “female” oriented band, my only explanation is “why not?”. If I pick a female record, why should I expect a masculine outcome? If I listen to Sia, or Donna Summers, I expect a woman singing things from their female perspective. If women have a softer side, so be it... I know men and women can have different tastes and there are some women doing great in metal, for example. But if I listen to a Lana Del Rey’s record I want her to be as feminine as she is.

It’s just that there are certain people who have a history of stealing many ideas and inventions and don’t give credit to people from various cultures. And racism has a lot to do with oppression and a person thinking there more superior because of there race. Its not so much racism. If your talking about people of color in general it’s just that it wasn’t that long ago where white people didn’t want black, Latino, and Asians on the same platform as them. White people didn’t even want to work with poc so now there’s a distrust going on. White people for so long tried to call poc’s culture and music outrageous. Many of those people who lived through those things are still alive and still remember. The effect that has happened due to that is you have statements like “They would never understand our lives and culture. Why do they suddenly want to be interested and invested now. Is this another white ploy?” You can’t really blame them because white people in general haven’t done anything for poc significantly enough to earn there trust. White Poole were the ones who isolated other races.

I actually watched a 'Old people react to Lana Del Rey' video where an old man literally said while listening to a song, "Oh, I see how this could appeal to men." Her sound is original and her lyrics are undoubtedly good (even if some of them are cliché's, I think she pulls them off and that's really not an easy thing to do). She created Lana Del Rey and she doesn't break character. The only thing I would say about her is I would never see her live. 80% of the time she sucks live.

Honestly, there isn't a point in arguing. It's like asking why a certain sound or melody appeals to me more than others. We can argue facts or details, productions, voice, history, etc. Our reasons are almost pure subjective. The thing about Lana is something about the melody, sound and sometimes lyrics just hit somewhere deep, contemplating some kind of lost and lonely and longing feeling. I was watching a Koreans react to Lana Del Rey music videos. They discussed a similar interpretation or impression of Lana as contemplative and some kind of sadness. I think that nails the sentiment and people respond or relate to it.

Hard agree on the 'treating or assessing female musicians in an isolated camp' point, it's frustrating in music and within other mediums. The amount of times I see discussions surrounding or comparing female writers (both modern and classic) to each other is getting tired- I see the point in comparing art when the artists might share a similar lens in some capacity at times, yes, but in a general sense it's so limiting. Two female musicians or authors won't necessarily share a lens that's more or less similar to a male artist, and I'd rather compare Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' to the works of Edgar Allen Poe or Robert Louis Stevenson or countless other horror writers of the 1800's because THAT feels like a succinct way to examine the growth of a genre... instead I'll get some bullshit 3rd year literature prompt like 'Compare 'Frankenstein' to Austin's 'Pride and Prejudice' through the lens of feminism as an ideology'.
