Let's Build a Medieval Army - Manor Lords Gameplay

I got early access to Manor Lords and built my first Medieval Army. In this video I share my first impressions from a playthrough.
This begins with the character and coat of arms builder. We then enter our scenario to begin forging our new settlement. Surviving the first year in Manor Lords involves collecting basic supplies, establishing a foundation of homes, and starting to invest in more specialized infrastructure. By the time winter hits I strike out to squash the local bandits. However this conflict soon spirals into a full blown war with my feudal neighbor.

Invicta actually used to be a Total War channel before we switched to focus on documentaries. I still play in my free time and miss being able to share some of the fun. While the plan is still to focus on docuentaries, I figured you all would appreciate some history themed gameplay every once in a while. In this case, covering Manor Lords is very much warranted : )

I love it. While I absolutley adore what this channel has become and the amazing artwork that goes into the documentaries, I do have to say that I kinda miss the Total War footage as a background for them sometimes. Probably more about nostalgia than anything else, but it certainly was a bit of my childhood 😅

I could imagine some big game mod in this game where you besiege a castle or some city. In essence, the siege did not last one attack as in TW, but several months or even years. During that time, a literal city of invaders could often be built around the castle. Just imagine if you started classically on the map. They began to acquire raw materials, gradually expanding across the map. Surround the city, cut off supplies. Build small fortifications. Skirmish. Build siege machines and dotho be in time pressure before the enemy army comes. Definitely a mod I'd like to play.

This just shows how much, all of us would love to throw money at creative assembly if only they could give us something. It's crazy, there is a real market niche, such a demand and no supply. Manor lords proves it, do a good job and look.. you don't even need marketing, people are happy to do it for you.

I've watched a few youtubers play this game, and almost all of them struggle against the larger enemy forces in the beginning. They failed to go after the bandit camps earlier to make gold to hire mercs, and by the time they realize it, the enemy lord have already wiped all the bandits out. But give this game to someone enthusiastic about medieval history and warfare and you immediately dominate the map, lmao!

When the modding community can do continent spanning campaigns in different historical eras, this mod might actually be the total war killer. I'm also curious how the finished product will handle the late game campaign when you're focusing on kingdom wide issues and large cities/royal armies etc. It's looking amazing so far.

A hugely important part of medieval towns, villages, cities, forts and fortresses of all sizes was waste disposal!!! Where is the midden or waste pit building?! This could effect disease going down with adequate waste disposal (add a rat catcher or something) It could be built up to large drainage ditches or aqueducts eventually or a fire pit or something?!

tbh i wish there was a tool system - i.e. your town needs tools to cut limber, shape the logs, plow the fields, etc. which would be expensive. if your tools break, you need new ones. maybe that would be a bit too complicated of a supply system. an in-depth blacksmithing system would be nice too, starting with just a single anvil and a moderate fire to make nails, etc, and having to upgrade the forge or whatever else. but i think a mining system would be required first

@Usammityduzntafraidofanythin
@Usammityduzntafraidofanythin Месяц назад
It doesn't seem like it'd be difficult to do age of empires combat. Unit walks up to a building - swings a torch at it, and it does damage to the building. Same goes for fighting an enemy unit. The stats would just be numbers interacting with each other. Armies are at most in the hundreds like in age of empires, rather than thousands like in total war, so it seems... simple. No need for the kind of abstraction this game seems to deal in. Pathing is complicated in any RTS, but I think roads kind of solve a lot of that - armies usually travel on roads. They could slow down and stall up or get confused off road, which would be fine - because roads are everywhere and lead into other lands. Off road could be accounted for to some extent to allow ambushing and skirmishing, and that sort of thing. That way, small unit groupings would move better off road, but other units could go to sleep if they're left alone too long, so as to simplify the number of moving parts. I wouldn't call total war style battles "crunchy", but diverse. Crunchy is more like age of empires, where the way individual soldiers interact is a lot cleaner. Diversity seems to be something that a total war style engine allows, though it doesn't necessarily pull off each individual thing well - it tends to glue something like a forest ambush into the UI and get it abstracted out for the sake of being part of the UI; rather than having the player more intuitively click at some trees with his selected soldier. Eg. The ambush would need to be next to a road along a specific axis, otherwise they can't do the ambush or they stall up or something total-war ish - much like trying to cross a bridge in shogun 2... in fact, the pathing was so bad in that game, that they couldn't possibly consider showing actual rice paddies in ancient japan, even though there would have been rice paddies everywhere... they needed to justify having wide open terrain (and then forests were just sight blockers, while hills would also slow a unit down). If it were intuitive though, the soldier could ambush from anywhere, so long as he's next to a tree, and say it were one tree per soldier you can hide (or he's in tall grass or something). Flanking in total war (or at least shogun 2) appeared to be a 1:1 thing, where if 1 soldier is fighting 2 on either side of him, then he's "flanked", and the unit at large gets the "flanks exposed" morale penalty. There's no reason why flanking can't just be 1:1 unit takes more damage if flanked or something. Morale could just be "defeat half the army in a select region" and then they flee, or if they're brave boys it could be "defeat 3/4 of the army within 100 meters (or whatever distance trace of area)". That would be much easier to code in, rather than morale requiring soldiers to cement themselves to a unit, and require the player to move the entire unit in order to tell individual soldiers to do anything. It's just a constant gripe I feel I have, the feeling that devs need to make units into these rigid companies. I get the inclusion of companies, but honestly, that shouldn't require the player to control the whole thing at once. It's like if you ordered a soldier to poop, you'd have to order the whole company to poop along with him. Another benefit of single soldier selection is if you have multiple dudes, they can take on formations much like a company; and you can create ANY company you like that way, and it behaves in accordance with the soldiers in it, rather than adhering to some kind of company abstracted unit behavior. Age of Empires 2 did that, but perhaps that's complicated (for a game from 1999 which had good pathing algorithms, i guess). Terrain doesn't seem complicated in this game - the maps are wide, and not filled up by cities. There's streets to simplify pathing through cities. Also, how the hell does a single village with no distinction between peasants and serfs, conjure up enough money (taxes, whatever) to hire out an entire company? I don't understand the insistence on total war style combat - the pathing of those games was very sophisticated. The engine was proprietary. It feels like a dumb executive decision for the sake of marketing to players who don't know any better (no offense to Invicta... you know your history, but game creation isn't magic and there's a few nuances that can't simply be assumed are possible or would make for a good game).
