For those “modellers”who think that slapping on a watery black wash over everything gives a weathered look, look on this and learn how it’s done properly. This is artistry in 3D.👍👍👍

Ok.. I'm hooked. Subscribed. I just started back building Biplanes. The kits are better but the skills of modelers and available improvements are light years beyond what I did back in the old days. I hope you will help us improve an older simpler kit.... since Wingnuts is Kaput. Thanks. A video on doing/improving rigging (and where to get items) would be great.

For the nylon thread I go for fishing line in .1mm thickness, it's often called 10/100. The turnbuckles I get from Gaspatch but you don't necessarily need them.

Stunning work. I will be starting my first bi-plane soon. It's the inter war years American Stearman PT-17 trainer in 1/32 from ICM. It seems an interesting kit and comes with three figures so should make a nice diorama. It's obviously not the quality of a Wingnut Wings or CSM kit, but it seems very good for the price. Been practicing making turnbuckles with 0.5mm brass tube, thin electrical wire and 1.12 fishing line. When it comes to doing it on the model though, all I can say is wish me luck! Oh, and you have another subscriber. Happy modelling my friend.

With so many painted surfaces, what glues are you using for each section? Love your work by the way.
@TheAlleyman
@TheAlleyman Год назад
Thanks Steve, I usually mask off the surfaces where parts are glued together. This is mainly to avoid fit issues but it also allows me to just use plastic cement. In case that I glue on a painted surface I'm using CA glue to not mess up the paint job.

How much time are you spending to complete a model like this? What about your oil paint drying time?
@TheAlleyman
@TheAlleyman Год назад
Well, I'm a slow builder, I tend to finish those 1/32 aircrafts over a period of 3 months. (That's not the net building time of course, I would guess I average maybe 1-2hrs a day modelling).
@TheAlleyman
@TheAlleyman Год назад
Oh and on oil paint drying time: if I use the oil paint directly out of the tube e.g. for wood grain or leather painting, I let it sit for at least a day (if I'm in a hurry), better two. For most of my weathering work I put the oil paint on a cardboard to suck out the oil for a couple of hours. In this case I let the paint sit on the model for maybe 15 minutes, then hit it with a hair dryer and then I go on painting.

skiping the primer leads to unpleasant surprises, no matter the subject painted
@TheAlleyman

Depends a bit on the paint. Lacquer or alcohol based acrylic on (clean) plastic is pretty safe. Water based acrylics without primer is a different story...
