en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popeye_%...
Popeye (ポパイ, Popai?) is a 1982 arcade game developed and released by Nintendo based on the Popeye cartoon characters licensed from King Features Syndicate. Some sources[2][3][4] claim that Ikegami Tsushinki also did design work on Popeye.
The Family Computer (Famicom) saw an educational sequel on November 22, 1983: Popeye no Eigo Asobi, an English teaching game akin to the later Donkey Kong Jr. Math.
In Popeye, two players can alternate playing or one player can play alone. The top five highest scores are kept along with the player's three initials. Popeye was available in standard and cocktail configurations.
Steve Harris, founder of the magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly, holds the world record score of 1,232,250 earned on August 8, 1983 according to Twin Galaxies International Scoreboard.
The Popeye characters were originally going to be used in the game that later became Donkey Kong.
Game Play
The object of the game was for Popeye to collect a certain number of items (24 hearts, 16 musical notes, or the letters in the word "help" - depending on the level) while avoiding the Sea Hag, Brutus / originally Bluto (Brutus was the name given to the character in the King Features cartoon series, Popeye the Sailor) and other dangers. The player can make Popeye walk back and forth and up and down stairs and ladders with an 8-way joystick. There is a punch button, but unlike similar games of the period, no jump button. (Conversely, Brutus can jump down a level and also jump up to hit Popeye if he is directly above.) Each level has a can of spinach. If Popeye punches the can, he becomes temporarily invincible and can knock out Brutus just by running into him; although after a few seconds Brutus will swim back out and be ready for action again.
In Round 1 (the dock scene) of each three-round cycle is a punching bag, which Popeye can use to knock loose a nearby barrel from its position near the top of the playing field. If the barrel falls onto Brutus' head, the player earns bonus points (based on where Brutus was attacked) and renders Brutus harmless for several seconds.
Otherwise Popeye's attacks did nothing to his nemesis; although the attack button did destroy items that could hurt Popeye such as bottles, vultures and skulls.
Other licensed Popeye characters in the game are Olive Oyl, Swee' Pea, and Wimpy, though they are mostly decorative and do not add heavily to the gameplay. Wimpy appears in Round 2 (the street scene) on one end of the see-saw in the lower left corner of the field, to act as a counterweight. Swee' Pea floats high above, with bonus points to be earned if Popeye can spring off the see-saw and touch him.

Fun fact: This is the only licensed game developed my Shigeru Miyamoto. Fun fact 2: Miyamoto wanted to develop a Popeye game as his first project for Nintendo, but they had difficulty getting the rights from King Features Syndicate. The result is Miyamoto created Donkey Kong.

Apparently, a small albino is being hunted by the pink Predator from above throwing shit at him, while a giant green alien from below is trying to kill him. HIs only hope is to eat one of the aliens detached balls. And when he does, the alien flies around the screen and gives out a horrible shrieking sound. I don't know if this glitch happens in any of the other versions, but in the C64 version, when you hit Bluto (Brutus) while in spinach mode, and he goes flying across the screen, if you hit the punching bag which releases the bucket, and time it perfectly so that it lands on his head, it'll freeze him in place but in that animation. Bluto is no longer a threat for the remainder of that level (or life, Popeye can still fail by not catching all the hearts in time, or get hit by a bottle)
@PeBoVision
@PeBoVision 6 лет назад
Missing background music aside, this is once again an excellent arcade conversion from Parker Brothers for the TI-99/4A and holds it's own handily among the other same-generation machines. Milton Bradley may be much more closely associated with the 4A, but with Popeye, Frogger, QBert (easily the best home-computer conversion at the time) and the recently released Tutankham, it was Parker Brothers who created the most compelling arcade-based titles for the TI-99. Considering the hardware though, the Odyssey2 port must have been a real labour of love. and the programmer actually pulled it off (even including the spinach theme!)! Yhay ois no small feat on such limited hardware. Huge Kudos!

Also, I loved the hell out of the mobile phone port that Namco did when I had my LG cellphone on Verizon years ago. Sure, the extra features cost me from data usage, but it was really nice being able to earn tokens just to be able to read some of the original color and B&W comics. That, and the extra and bonus stages really helped further enhance the Arrange Mode.

By the standard of doing what you could with the hardware you had, the 2600 version really is one of the best ports. Many of the other ports on much more capable systems had no excuse to be so different from the arcade.

I played the Colecovision one back in the day. It had a funny glitch on the second level. Just chase Bluto to the see saw after getting the spinach and he'll spin across the screen indefinitely until the end of the level.

if it was up to me when playing Popeye, I would save the Spinach until the last item pickup so that it would work more like in the cartoons (acting as a deus ex machina for Popeye in the last stretch)

You missed!! the Game and Watch PANORAMA versión. It's the most beautiful of them all and the most fun among all the versions.

One of the best games that I played in arcades and Greek-owned UK restaurants, back around 1983! (Star Wars and Mr Do also) That Odyssey version is set in a dystopian Popeye future world?

I share Your sentiment but I believe it could have been even better. In fact I believe the NES could have handled at least a 98% accurate port. Larger sprites & an opening sequence would have sent this version over the top. Have You seen the Opcode remakes of Donkey Kong & Pac-man for the colecovision ? Absolutely astounding ! I'm sure the NES could have handled much much more. Thanks for commenting.

Loved the arcade Popeye, liked it more than Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. even. Coleco and NES had the best ports though I hate what they did to the Popeye sprite in the NES version.

Best version: Nes, absolutely, then C64. The Java edition is horrible, absolutely.

There is also another Game & Watch Popeye in two formats: Panorama Screen and Tabletop.

I know, not that many. The arcade version also had some pretty good sprite work as well with the way they did those designs. I sorta liked it when you leave a heart sinking in the water and Olive Oyl comes down and scolds you for it.

Strange fact: The villain in the arcade game is identified as Brutus, the version of Bluto who exists because of poor legal research. (Why is Bluto sometimes Brutus? Well, King Features, the comics syndicate with the rights to Popeye, believed *incorrectly* that they didn't own Bluto. He was a villain from E. C. Segar's comic strip, but a rather minor and obscure one, elevated to major status only by Fleischer Studios' cartoon shorts, which made him Popeye's recurring archnemesis in endless damsel-in-distress plots. King Features, who I guess had a lazy legal department, mistakenly thought the Fleischers had invented Bluto entirely, and came up with "Brutus" as a substitute character, who appeared under that name in the cartoons made for TV in the Sixties and after. And in this game.)

That odyssey port cant be officially licensed. There's no way a port of a game based on a popular cartoon like Popeye would reduce the characters to unrecognizable stick figures like that, and I dont think they were even still making Odyssey games by 1982

The Amiga port is from Bignonia, a couple of sceners dedicated to port some C64 classics to the Amiga. Algo converted Donkey Kong and Frantic Freddie, which are both great.

correct. I actually had to add sound effects to help make the footage a little more bearable. lol You would be amazed at how much editing some of these require.

Pretty clear that the Apple II port was a homebrew. But why the hell didn't it have an official Popeye release? Or Donkey Jr., for that matter, when the Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. ports were done so well?!?! 🤔

Odyssey 2..wow, people needed a lot of imagination to believe these lines were supposed to be Bluto, Popeye and Olive, i have soft spot for C64/Amiga versions, as i grew up playing them.

If I had to guess what the Odyssey 2 version was without knowing, I would think it was about Egyptian mythology, it looks like the Nile and some pyramids at the bottom, some sort of goddess at the top, and the green thing looks like a monstrous giant.
