Let's Compose... A String Quartet! Episode 1: Introduction

Welcome to my new series. With this series I will be composing a new piece for string quartet and commentating my process as I go on. The aim is to create some compelling content, explain some of the processes and thoughts that go behind my compositional approach and to be informative for people interested in taking up composition.
The format of this series is inspired by RU-vid "Let's Players" that commentate on their games as they play them. In particular:
BDoubleO
/ bdoubleo100
Ethoslab
/ ethoslab
and the Mindcrack team.
Please forgive the slowness of this first episode - takes everyone a while to get into the swing of commentating, and I'm learning this as I go. I am aware of the pacing issue and have dealt with it in later videos.
Intro Music: "Summer" by Edward Caine and Alan Gillot, performed by Robert Rice and William Vann
More information about me: www.edwardcaine...
In this episode we just introduce the series and talk about some of the ideas that are going to be going into the piece.
If you have any suggestions or comments please feel free to comment below. I will be reading them. To save you some time:
This is the first time I've done this, I did have to skip the video quite a lot, and I ran out of tape and had to start again at one point.
I think I made a couple of grammar errors as I was speaking and haven't tried to fix them. Commentating is quite difficult.
I don't really have any cheery music to use for the intro and outro yet. I'm hoping this piece will take the place of "Summer".
Music is a very subjective thing and I fully accept that you may not like mine. If that's the case then it doesn't really need to be said.
My explanation of harmonics was a little vague and rushed - sorry about that, second time I had done it and had lost the thread a bit.
Please leave a like if you like it and subscribe if you'd like more. More information about my music can be found on my website.

I really enjoy "let's plays" of video games, as a gamer. As a composer, too, this is a great idea, and a great find for me. Thank you. :)

Thank you for this! This is a great idea; I've always wanted to see a composer's process in action. I've studied music and played music, but never been able to see as it's created. I'll definitely be watching the series in full (When not watching the endless mindcrack videos, of course).

Great work, lad! As a composer, I really wish teachers did this, because as you said there is not really a method for teaching composition. But composing while explaining is the way…the Hindemith way. Thanks)

Hi! In this video you talk about using Sibelius software to 'type set' your music. I am currently using Sibelius to compose a piano string quartet for my A-Level composition and overall I think it's a very impressive piece of software. However, I'm finding it difficult to compose using Sibelius because regardless of the amount of editing I do to the piece, it never sounds how I want it to/how I imagined it to sound. Do you ever experience this kind of problem when type set your music/ideas into Sibelius? (or is it something that I'm maybe doing wrong?).

What kind of pencil are eraser are you using? In NYC all the music stores are closing.... It's hard to find scoring paper these days.. especially of various scoring paper from piano to orchestral.

Second comment about compositions. If you hear a symphony by Elgar (for instance) you could technically form a large (high notes to low notes ) chord to represent the basic sound of his symphony. That will be similar to looking at a painting to see what type of paint is used. Oil or watercolours or ,God forbid ,Acrylics . The large chord would be your Medium for that composition . Does that make any basic sense? This is from a non composer btw .

Sad thing is I was Counting on this to be a good video from the cover. It's ok though, I'm already an outstanding guitarists self taught and most likely to advanced from this sort of a guy talking about where he visits and things of that nature. Just trying to brush up on more than just guitar scales and theory, I'll go to Berklee, later guy.

Make a big effort to keep reading this after you see the word computer. I tried to see if a simple Spectrum computer would generate any useful note sequences . In fact they were random numbers between 1 and 9 . I tried this after buying an old book by Barlow and Morgenstern where they found it useful to pare down most classical pieces to about 8 notes.The main melody or tune . I did whatever I liked once the note sequence was registered. No rhythm was involved.Just a few numbers. So compare that random universe of numbers with a blank sheet. It`s far easier to recognise something that might turn into a melody than waitng for inspiration . Within a few days the method refined itself. You need to try that if you have not already. You may end up with a series of unrelated fragments which could be used later. Not all the fragments suitable for a quartet would appear in the order you would prefer. Just collect the ones that are interesting. Jejecting the rubbish is quick and easy . The sheet of blank paper is a far harder way .
@eddjcaine
@eddjcaine 9 лет назад
whatever helps! I don't really have that many problems with a blank manuscript. I have used random numbers in the past - it helps to have a definite use. Your use of pitch negation is an interesting way to find what you want. Good luck with it!

maybe if you asked them to 'comment' rather than to 'commentate' (sic), they could get into the swing of things a bit quicker. forgive me, i must 'transition' (sic) to another video to see if i might ever have a chance of acquiring 'normalcy' (sic) of cognitive functions.

commentate (ˈkɒmənˌteɪt) vb 1. (Broadcasting) (intr) to serve as a commentator 2. (tr) US to make a commentary on (a text, event, etc) Usage: The verb commentate, derived from commentator, is sometimes used as a synonym for comment on or provide a commentary for. It is not yet fully accepted as standard, though widespread in sports reporting and journalism In the description of the video, I am the one commentating. You commented.

I don't understand all the hate! Composing must be one bitch of a subject. Hell, People spend years to college to study that trick! Here, the man tries his best to introduce the subject slowly by building a background on which he promises to put more bricks on, in subsequent videos. People need to learn how to be more patient. Not everything has a "Quick-fix" solution.

the criticism is over how pointless and poorly done the series is...But like the man said, it IS free. (; I find in a lot in amateur tutorials, even ones that are very informative, a WHOLE lot of unnecessary 'nervous' meandering chatter, where by the end I'm pulling my hair and thinking very loudly "GET TO THE GODDAMN POINT ALREADY" Seriously, just plan and write down what you're going to address BEFORE turning on the camera... i.e. "In this series we're going to learn the fundamentals of writing a string quartet. In part one we'll discuss layout of the complete score, rehearsal number assignments and the 'do's and don'ts of writing out individual parts In part two we will use a Hayden quartet to analyze and discus the various textures most common to the string quartet. In part three we'll discus various articulations and effects most common to the string family etc etc...something like that

I respect the fact that you wanted to make a video about composition, But I am sorry to tell you that there is way too much irrelevant talk in it and the actual presentation is really very slow. I don't know how many people discontinue this video series after watching this intro video. must be a big number. with all that said, I hope you are well prepared and organized in your future videos. hope you take this as constructive criticism. All the best!

1. You voice sounds amazingly like Brian Cox 2. You created a video called "let's compose" and I'm 8 minutes in and you've barely done anything but prattle on self-indulgently about yourself. Which is a pretty shitty thing to do. If you want to babble pointlessly about yourself, create a video called "my random thoughts". If you want to create a composing video, create a bloody composing video. DON'T call it one thing and then do the other.
