i know it would be hard to fit a can of workable fixative spray in the art snacks box but it is kinda essential for chalk pastels since it is what will set them in place. pastels are so messy and fixative really helps you preserve your artwork once its finished so it doesn't just smear everywhere.

I have used hairspray on pastels as a fixative and it works quite well.

Hullo Kasey! If you don’t want to touch the pastels, you can use those sponge tools that they sell for use with pan pastels, it is a “cleaner” choice for many. I suggest a sanded paper or pastelmat that grabs hold of the pigment and also helps keep it clean! I believe that you did create an amazing artwork! Thank you for sharing this fun time and showing us how amazing you can be with soft pastels in the crunch!

You can make egg tempera with the dust! It fixates the paint for you. Egg yolk, from a fresh egg, really dry the yolk with some paper and remove the "skin" from it. In a separate cup mix a little water with a drop of vinegar, then whisk it into the egg and then add to the dust. Really recommend this for using up dry pastels that are beyond saving or using.

I love chalk pastels. They were one of the first color mediums I learned how to use. I remember my first semester of college, and we were doing pastels in drawing 1 and I ended up with pastels all up my left arm and it was a blast.

@@KaseyTheGolden this is great advice! I have almost given up on so many art supplies because I couldn't get along with the "right way" to use them. One of the reasons I fell in love with your art style and channel was because I had only ever seen people use watercolours as my Mam does, by painting landscapes. Don't get me wrong, she is pretty good and has painted some gorgeous pictures but it isn't an art style that ever really spoke to me or encouraged me to keep trying and practicing. I admire those that do but I don't have the patience to add dots and blobs of 15 different shades of green just to make one little tree or shrub (although ironically I will sit and do tens of really thin layers of coloured pencils, going back and forth on the same piece to create a depth in the piece). When I first saw you using watercolours to do illustration style art and your silly characters with their butts hanging out I absolutely loved it because you made watercolours look fun to use! I am by no means any good with them bur I thoroughly enjoy playing around with them now whereas when I was younger and my Mam used to try and get me to try them out when I showed interest in the techniques and the paints themselves I would be bored solid within 5 minutes of trying to paint a bunch of trees or a pond 🤣 So yes, absolutely! Finding a way for the medium to work in a way that is fun and fits your style is a fantastic piece of advice!

This is one of the reasons that I love getting art subscription boxes like Scrawlrbox and Artful, because it forces you to try out different art supplies. Some may be ones that you have wanted to try out but don't want to commit to buying all the pieces (specific pens/paints/pencils/paper or work surface eg lino/screen print etc) if you then may not enjoy it or want to do it again. Others may be things that you've not tried since school, have never wanted to try or even ones you have never heard of which all push you out of your comfort zone and allow you to explore something new without the worry of the expense if you don't get along with it or worrying about having no idea what you are doing - that's the whole point!

I really love the sky on the right page; it looks like an aurora, kinda. Also the idea of pastels and that nails on chalkboard feel sets my teeth on edge. 😬😵‍💫 I’ve never been a fan of chalk pastel or charcoal…although I am starting to try pan pastel. Not looking forward to the messes that will be made, but so far they haven’t evoked the truly visceral reaction that chalk pastels do.

tip for using pastels n any chalky suplies: you might wanna seal the thing with this sealant spray after you've done with the drawing, reason: the colors spread otherwise and can ruin the other drawings they are against while the actual drawing you wanted to keep the colors in might fade away like the lil orb face thing there also gotta say you got some super good colors there kasey, i can see you use them again in the future, propably making some amazine backgrounds n stuff

I have been trying to work with chalk pastels for years but I hate the mess - the texture is so-so for me, not too bad but not exactly pleasant. I have just bitten the bullet and bought myself a set of pastel pencils - far less mess as the chalk is contained within the pencils and if you use other tools to blend and mix (which apparently you are supposed to do as your fingers leave oils from your skin and affect the results of blending and mixing colours etc) as well as using a workable fixative spray then there is far, far less mess! Now all I have to do is work up the courage to actually learn to use them properly 🤣🤣
