Nestled on the banks of Huzzah creek in Crawford County is a Missouri State Park, The original mill was built in1853 and was known as the Wisdom Mill Named after its builder, Francis Wisdom. The first mill was destroyed by fire in 1895. The current mill was built and operated by the Mische family in 1904 (1904-1908).The mill closed in 1956. In 1975 the property was sold and the mill renamed the Dillard Mill when the State of Missouri took over the care of the property. The property was dedicated as a historical site in 1977, and the restoration was completed in 1980. We will join a tour of the mill and will take a closer look at all of the equipment inside of Dillard Mill and watch the mill in operation. We will also talk about the history of the mill and the struggles of constructing a mill back in the day. We will also talk about the process of how flour is made and how they used mills to grind corn. I will discuss the various types of propulsion used in these old mills, we'll talk about an overshot water wheel, a undershot water wheel, a pitchback water wheel and the turbine.
These mills were the original "green" energy manufacturing plants. There is so much history associated with these old grist mills and each one has it's own story to tell. Join me as we explore water mills all over the country.

Welcome to Millin' Around with Jim Viebrock.
In this video blog series I travel all around the country re-visiting the old mills that I have photographed for more than 30 years. These sites have interesting history and are nestled in some of the most picturesque locations in the country. I'll talk about the unique features of each structure and the use of the topography to create energy, I'll share the stories of human success and trials, how the mill operated and how each mill impacted the communities that grew alongside them. I'll talk about how these mills were used during the civil war, why they were captured or burned and by who. These fascinating locations are true survivors and their stories are worthy of telling. Come with me on a beautiful journey of folklore, history and engineering, not to mention some of the most beautiful and amazing locations.

I remember fishing the mill pond and spillway that was a long time ago.

The mill operator used to have fishing poles available for his patrons to use while he milled their product. I think that was genius.

I remember my family taking me here and several other mills when I was a child. I have always been fascinated with mills and old time machinery. This is one of the most memorable ones and also probably one of the closest to my home in St. Louis. I need to make plans to go back sometime on the next couple years.

The segmented millstone developed after the quarry vein depleted. Metal banding salvaged years of scrap rubble dumps by European stone mason artists. It is a shame to see banded millstones exposed to outdoor weather, when the bands rust apart very are rebanded.

I have two griss mill stones both are made out granite and both are 36" in diameter and one is 8" thick and one is 12" thick. About how much does each weigh?
@millin360
@millin360 Год назад
That would be hard to say without actually weighing them but, I'm told that the smaller stone would weigh somewhere between 1200 to 1500 pounds and the larger stone will top 2000 pounds easily. Thank you for watching my videos.
