HIstory/Herstory Teachers all over the USA and beyond should be sharing your superb mini portraits of economic life with such relatable topics a the way we clean……I would love to have presentation to share with my high school students such as this …..what LIVELY discussions we would have had…..my greatest joy was the sharing of ideas in the classroom…..
I have a vintage "sweep broom" that I purchased at an estate sale for $3 several years ago. It is a metal square with two little doors on the bottom, a bristle roller in the middle. I use that on my rugs more than my actual vacuum cleaner! It seems to pick up much more than the vacuum and so easy to dump out whatever it picks up.
Fantastic job, Renée, as always. 👍I remember that the first vacuum cleaner my family got was a Hoover, a small and very loud one in dark red and silverish. And I also remember tons of TV ads during that time with their slogan "Die gute Wahl - Hoover !" (The good choice- Hoover !) which was sung by some lovely female voices. Childhood memories...😊Keep it up, and have a good one ! 🖐Greets from GER, U.
Die gute Wahl! That even sounds good when you say it! I remember my grandmother always complaining about how heavy her vacuum was & that it was impossible to use on her stairs to the second floor. She was right! Carrying vacuums back then felt like you were going to the gym! You needed a separate bag for all of the different attachments too. Those were the days! Hope that your week is going well so far!
Great video Renee, I remember Grandma had a manual carpet sweeper and then periodically the rugs where taken outside and beaten. Once again great video love you and thanks for sharing.
Another great montage!!!❤ I remember that my grandmother had a hand held brown Bissel sweeper-- she used it manually on rugs. I would use it at times and it did pick up things on carpets.
Another great video! What would our great-great grannies say about Roomba? 😅 (I call my little dog Roomba because she glides over floors with her nose down, looking for crumbs) 😊
Hello Renee. It’s amazing how much vacuum cleaners have changed but yet the noise is still the same. They are still a wonderful tool for cleaning. You can clean your floors to curtains and so much more. They also make great spider destroyers . Hahaha. 😅. Wonderful video. Love, love loved it. Take care. 🕵🏼♀️🕵🏼♀️🕵🏼♀️🕵🏼♀️🕵🏼♀️🕵🏼♀️☕️🫖☕️🫖☕️🫖🥰🥰🥰💯💯💯💯💯💯
A lot of those vacuums look like Kirby's! I remember when the Kirby salesman came to our house & I thought he'd never leave. He shampooed & vacuumed just about everything. Yes, my folks bought one & it lasted over 40 years. Boy was it heavy 😂
Oh wow, he really was trying to get that sale! Was it awkward at all having a stranger in your home vacuuming everything? At least he left you with a clean house! :0)
@@PaperandMoose It was strange to me but I was 7 & he was there all day. I even remember his name & it's been 65 years ago. I just wanted him to leave so we could eat dinner 😂
You know, I never gave one thought to the dawn of the vacuum age - and when it might have been - until today. I think it's funny that they advertised wireless vacuums in the '20s & '30s. How did you think to research this topic? Was it while you were vacuuming? I am offended on behalf of Buzz that radios were not included in the $125 you needed to spend to get a free sweeper. There's a great clip elsewhere on RU-vid of Mel Blanc playing.a vacuum salesman and trying to get his pitch right. I was watching a UK game show one time - also on RU-vid - and they kept talking about Henry and Henry Hoovers - had to look that one up. Now the only mass-produced vacuum in the UK. Cute, too. Great ads, great music. Thanks for continuing to use your talents to bring these to us. Have a great Wednesday!
I was just looking at old newspapers and saw an ad for a vacuum so wondered what type of advertising was used. Naturally no men were a part of the ad illustrations, for of course vacuuming back then was a woman's job! There were also so many ads in the classified section for used & repaired vacuum cleaners. I think most people today wouldn't be interested in buying a used vacuum cleaner unless it was an expensive brand or never used in the box and for a discounted price at a yard sale. The vacuum I have came from a house cleanout, but it's a simple one and I was able to clean it before using it. (Also helped that it didn't come from the "Hot Dog" house! Haha) I didn't see any ads for door-to-door vacuum salesmen, so that must have come along later in the sweeper craze!
Another neat video...one I can relate to, I have a 1948 Hoover model 60 vacuum....it cleans like a REAL vacuum cleaner!! One of my collector friends collects and restores vintage vacuums! His collection spans the years 1920-1950. Got to love your choice of music!
It must be fun to be able to restore the older vacuums. I’m sure that many appreciate his knowledge & ability to restore them, for the older vacuums are built to last & like you said, do a better job than the new ones!
Hurray for Mr. Dyson and a bigger hurray for my robot vacuum, it was one of my chores to drag a Kirby vacuum around the house and what's worse is to attach the hose and lift the thing up the stairway carpet.
@@PaperandMoose nah, I'm not that old. Although I have to admit that I, unlike you youngsters, remember back to the old days and anno domini when we used 19 as the first numbers. Oh yes. The good old days.
I usually get into my best cleaning modes when it's an hour before I go to bed and my brain thinks "Hey! Why not start cleaning the cupboards and mop the kitchen floor?"
Hey Miss Moose.... first came the stone age, then the bronze age, then the iron age, and finally the broom age! 🧹 I'd tell you a vacuum cleaner joke, but they all suck! What type of vacuum cleaner do you have?🤔 Buzz's guess is a Hoover... 🥸
Good vacuum joke! I have a vintage one called "Carpet Cat" that is manual - a roller in the middle on the bottom flicks what is collected into two compartments that are emptied by opening the little tray doors on the bottom. Probably the best $3 I ever spent at an estate sale! My "electric" vacuum is a Dirt Devil :0)
