Hey Booktube, it's time for my yearly BOOK UNHAUL! I'm getting rid of over 45 books and making space for more hauls ;) I've definitely noticed some themes with this one. Getting rid of older YA fantasy and sci fi books I'll never get to and the adult fantasy ones that weren't for me!

Do you unhaul books? What's the last one you had to get rid of?
@deendrew36
@deendrew36 Год назад
Once or twice a year, I go through my books. I get rid of any basic fiction books I KNOW I won’t read again. Any of favourite authors (I only have a couple of faves), I keep. I also have an extensive cookbook collection, and I weed those out too. Usually get rid of 4-6 cookbooks per year, and maybe 10-15 fiction books. Most non fiction, I keep unless I have read it, got what I want out of it an won’t reach for it again.

Unhaul is great! I decided I’d sell on Pango Books (I think they only operate in the US), but mainly the books I enjoyed at least a little bit. Some might end up in little libraries around the neighborhood. And those I didn’t like at all will go in a box and out on a curb.

I love donating books when I can, though I don't do it as much these days as I've gotten my library in a fairly well-curated state. I tend to get rid of 'fine but forgettable' books if they don't have any sentimental value; non-fiction books that were interesting but I don't hold a special interest in; and books that I just plain didn't like. Really like giving away books when I can too, although that doesn't happen as often. (I wish local book-trades were a thing!)

I do unhaul books. Most of the time they're either books I had no interest in finishing, or they are books that I will not read or reference again. Even if I enjoyed the book, if I don't think I'll read it again, I'll donate it somewhere so someone else will enjoy reading it. The last book I unhauled was Sea Witch along with Sea Witch Rising by Sarah Henning. These were just because I didn't love them enough to keep them, though I think they're worth the read.

I always feel relieved when I realise I'm not the only person with a 'meh' feeling towards King 😅 Also, enough people I trust the opinions of have either officially denounced Murakami or won't read them at all, so I'm happy to delete them from my TBR. ALSO! "Is it me that hates women? No, you just can't stand women written by men!" This was SUCH a huge thing when I realised it! I couldn't understand for the longest time why I couldn't stand nearly all female characters I read, despite the fact that in my baby-feminist days I tried so hard to prefer them. Once I started reading more books written by women / queer authors, the difference was night and day. Depressing but refreshing at the same time. 😅

@@BookswithEmilyFox there is a lot of bad writing of women and sex and sexualization (and sex) of under-aged girls in 1Q84. I did think it was a good book, as the magical realism mystery bit was very interesting (there's something with a parallel world that has different rules and a kind of order/chaos spiel). I do really enjoy the way that things unravel and unfold in Murakami novels and especially this one, but you'll most likely be annoyed with many aspects of it. I was.

I usually agree with Emilys takes on books, especially concerning misogony, and 1Q84 is the worst book I have ever read. I picked it for a bookclub because the magic system sounded interesting, and we all DNF'd because the main character was so unlikeable and the way the women were written was so uncomfortable! hey emily, i just wanted to say that i always appreciate you for calling out misogyny in fiction and being so unforgiving about it even if it is small instances. a lot of popular books or series that are so beloved on booktube sound right up my alley and even booktubers i trust and love will rave about them and then i check out the goodreads reviews or watch you talk about them and you list all these gross quotes that completely put me off them and makes me so confused why nobody ever brings it up. and yes sometimes the booktubers i like and trust like i mentioned will address the misogyny as an afterthought like “oh this book is wonderful, showstopping, perfect, 5/5 stars!!! however there is some misogyny that i had an issue with but otherwise its flawless!” and it feels so minimizing of the issue to me, like i’m glad that’s not the kind of thing that bothers someone enough to deter their enjoyment of a book but i could never rate smth 5 stars and only view misogyny as a “yikes afterthought” no matter how much i love the book otherwise. like thats the kind of thing that will completely ruin my enjoyment of a book no matter how good the worldbuilding or characters are. so thank you for calling that stuff out bluntly and not reducing it to this ~itty bitty issue~

I am SHOCKE at the Red Rising series. Gosh, I never even approached that area of the bookstore in my life, and reluctantly picked up the first book in order to participate in my work book club. I absolutely LOVED it and devoured the next ones. Now I am dying waiting for books 6&7 coming out this year. One of my fave series ever!

Ok. Honestly I really loved 1Q84. I listened to it read by Alison Hiroto, which was very nice in itself. I did raise an eyebrow here and there, but I liked the parallel world kind of thing, and Murakami is good for when you want something that goes smoothly. I did read a year later The wind up bird chronicles which was reaaally bad and maybe put me off reading Murakami since then. I DNFed it after at some point a female character wants to have sexy time with the bland main male character, which is also a tool of a man, to “clean herself” after rape. Excuse me, what? But I don’t remember anything weird like that in 1Q84.

I agree with the Dark Tower series. I read the entire series and there was only two of the books I really enjoyed, and one of them was a tie in, and had really nothing to do with the series.

I do have a tendency to just leave books on my shelves even if I didn't like them. I read first book in the Memoirs of Lady Trent series and honestly didn't like it. Mainly because of the ending. I wasn't sure if I was going to continue the series but of course I bought book 2 because I'm a glutton for punishment. If it's not at least a 4 star for me though I'm going to unhaul both. Miss Percy's Guide to Dragons gives me similar vibes but it's so much better imo.

I generally only unhaul books that are below a 3.5 rating for me, but I recently moved and to avoid boxing up more books than I needed to I unhauled most of my duplicates, and books that were in rougher condition, including ones that had annotations that weren't mine.

I wonder if the 'make her an alcoholic' thing by Sager is bc of the inability to write women well, so giving them a substance abuse problem alleviates the writer from making choices that make any sense at all.

I think in the past year (between moving and then reorganizing my room) I've unhauled about 75 books. We are NOT going to talk about how many I've also acquired...but I think I need to do a round of read it or unhaul it for my TBR shelves.

I extremely appreciate you having such a short amount of patience for books that are misogynistic or gross about women, because it's a major problem I have with books frequently. I read for pleasure and reading about SA, or a fictional woman's body, or how the main character hates women is not pleasurable. If i wanted to upset myself with misogyny I have the entire internet to explore of real people having really bad opinions, I do not need a complicated magic system to go along with it.

Good call! I assure you, the Dark Tower series only gets worse as it goes along. I'm a SK fan but I couldn't get past the third book. I'm told in, like, the 8th book SK becomes a character in story. It's a fantasy; my head hurts just imagining how that might work. Ugh. Try Mr. Mercedes and the series that follows it, you might like those, they're basically detective stories.

I think you might like Ilona Andrews' books. Female characters are freaking amazing in those stories. I read two books of Hidden Legacy series and it's so cool, especially Nevada and her grandma are fantastic, they really know how to write characters (maybe because it's duo of husband and wife). You know, it's not the most ambitious read, but really nice adult urban fantasy with a lot of humor and some smut scenes.

I do feel the same way about Stephen King, I really want to find my Stephen King Pearl but I have no idea what I will like by him, I have a lot of books that I am really curious about but I have never read anything by him I really loved or even liked. I am curently reading the scorpio races mid reading slump and I don't know if I'm going to like it, but I don't hate it so I will try to finish is haha. There are so many YA books I also unhauled or still want to try one day. I really love the Infernal devices and The mortal instruments but I unhauled all of the other shadowhunter books because I really don't care anymore about them. I have unhauled a lot of books this year already, a lot of books I just finished and was like, nope I will not bother putting you on my bookshelf again, and a couple of weeks ago I got rid of a lot of books I forgot about after reading them or never finished them I never will. Plus just last week I got rid of a huge stack, I guess around 40 too, of the books on my unread shelf, books I don't want to try anymore, my taste is a bit different than back in the day haha. I also had kind of a theme, I got mostly rid of middle grade books and vampire themes (completely done with them), and a lot of incomplete of huge series I will never pick up haha

And then you look forward to more worthy reading challenges and have a better chance of being happy. I never feel sorry getting rid of really bad books or books that just don't work for me. Not what I'm looking for. Good for you for moving forward with your life.

Excellent point re: getting rid of books that annoy you just to look at them. I have a bad habit of hanging onto things that are supposedly great but which I personally didn’t like. I hated that Riley Sager book Home Before Dark. HATED it. I thought it was totally manipulative and couldn’t stand the weak ending. Yet it’s still here, as is Wise Man’s Fear, The Shining, and an assortment of other offensive crap that I know I’ll never touch again. Including (!), sadly, the Grady Hendrix book The Southern Guide to Slaying Vampires. That one broke my heart. Anyway, they’re all going bye bye. Life is too short!!!
