I seen one guy write on one RU-vid channel: the more in depth, complex and explained the power system in an anime is. The funnier the moment whan some one pules out a gun
@@yuvalgabay1023And he's right, whoever it is. For serious, though, making an IED is about the closest your average Sleeper is gonna come to casting Fireball. Remember, EVERYTHING humans do is magic.
I wish you'd gone through he reasons for it. "Firearms, so we can cast gun." Funny as that is, it'd be useful to know what stats would be relevant to certain stuff. Like, for example, 'Data' uses Enigmas for certain abilities. It'd be useful to know this sort of stuff, since jumping into mage is a nightmare and it's hard to tell which skills are necessary.
The "science bad and magic good" thing you say is a false dichotomy. All science is magic in WoD. Just part that has joined the concensus. I highly recommend this RU-vid channel if you are intrigued by the lore. ru-vid.com/group/PLl1ffEF0w9j33KWwQRywPEVbM97fL_bQm&si=GTk6g04lgW59Vuo0
I was super into these games when they were newish. Now I still find the ideas appealing but.....how can I put this. You know how Gambit embodies Triple-Distilled Nineties Edge™in comics? White Wolf is the Gambit of games. Vampire especially, but it's a disease they all have.
"Magic is good, science and technology is bad." I suppose in the early books that's true, but it's a lot more gray, now. The Technocratic Union leadership itself is pretty bad and its effect on the world is hampering human creativity, but the individual members are generally real believers in making the wonders of magic (sorry, "enlightened science") available to the masses through systematizing it. Indeed, it's the Order of Reason (the predecessors of the modern Technocracy) that have made the biggest positive impact on the lives of the average person, as their advances have brought health and prosperity that would be unheard of in the age when the Traditions reigned supreme. Technology also isn't separate from magic, by the way. EVERYTHING in the World of Darkness is controlled by human belief and what they think the world is. Technology is just ritual magic that has become so accepted that it's become a part of the Concensus and doesn't need a Mage to make it work anymore.
It's also important to remember that if you use technology in a way the technocracy doesn't like they'll kick you to the curb and hunt you as reality deviants (see the Society of Ether and Virtual Adepts)
@@itme626 To be fair, the Virtual Adepts aren't actually reality deviants, generally. Their paradigm is still pretty Technocrat. Their beef with the Union is mostly political: they believe in freedom of information and using technology to liberate humanity, while the Technocracy is obsessed with heavily steering the narrative and enhancing their own control. Most Union personnel would still recognize them as doing Enlightened Science in a way they wouldn't many Etherites.
Additional note; the other part of why 'magic good, tech bad' is because technology is influenced by the Weaver, who is attempting to overtake the world and perfectly order-fy it, and also caused a lot of the world's problems when it interfered with the Wurm.
The guys who want to destroy all of the grimdark stuff and save their setting from being clown world, providing everyone some sense of normalcy and rationality to look forward to for generations? Nah, they're the villains bro
@@AAllen-br8itThe guys who want to force their worldview onto everyone and kill anything they think shouldn't exist? They're the good guys bro, stop asking questions.
I DM'd a Mage game for years, and I love the magic system in it. No fixed set of magic spells means players can cast come up with whatever spell they want so long as they can justify it using what spheres their character has points in. Given that the magic system is entirely free form, I think the rules for magic are pretty streamlined. After a few sessions everyone got used to casting spells w/o thinking about it too much. Now the rest of the WoD (and NWoD) systems, very messy. If you want to get complicated, look up the rules for grappling in NWoD, especially with supplement books added in.
In regards to your roll being a success/failure, I'd say it works. You wouldn't be able to see the person who sent it or go to them, but you'd be able to see the source of the email you received. Since the computer you're using is familiar and 'cyberspace' is not a physical distance. It'd be like searching for the return address on an envelope. You don't need to _go_ to that address to see it written on the envelope in your hands.
They couldn't really have copied the magic system from Mummy because that was released in 2001. The 1e Mage version you use is from 93. This 1e edition magic system you've referenced is the simplest Mage the Ascension's magic will ever be. Look at M20 if you want to see how needlessly complicated this thing can become. An other nitpick. Don't make the "Science is bad" mistake. The perversion of science by the Technocracy to turn it into a system of Sleeper control is bad. Both the Sons of Ether and the Virtual Adepts use science and technology to work their Magick. But, like I said, nitpicks. Kinda cool you chose to use the 1e Edition!
🗳 My current votes 🗳 for *"Let's make a character for ________"* 1) Shadowrun ( all editions ) 2) Traveller ( all editions ) 3) Star wars roleplaying from Fantasy Flight / edge studios 4) RuneQuest 5) King Arthur Pendragon 6) The Mutant Epoch from Outland Arts. 7) Mutant crawl classics
10:14 that's the curse of dice pool systems. The goal is to simply the system to make it easier to flavor things to make the experience flow. But because they are making a game and need to justify selling more products and make it feel deeper. They always strap on layers of mechanics over the core system until one needs flow charts to make sure one doesn't miss a step.
Actually yes, it's one of those "Kinda want to review, but the videos on obscure games do really poorly" games that I should really put into some kind of priority list.
You should do a comparison to the new "Chronicles of Darkness" by Onyx Path. Very similar to the old White Wolf "World of Darkness" but with a lot of little tweaks to improve consistency across the different books.
I would have gotten up from the table and gone back home as soon as I saw your character's name. Thankfully it's much easier to just close the RU-vid video.
