Hey guys! Welcome to another episode of Let's Off-Road! In this one I drive in my FJ Cruiser along with a classmate in his Hummer H3 and my uncle in his Sequoia on Rattlesnake Trail in Northern Utah.
This video was filmed after school had finished for the 2012-1013 school year and on my second to last day in Utah before moving back to Colorado that year.
I decided to go hit up Rattlesnake Canyon/Rattlesnake Trail at 5 Mile Pass one last time and I was able to get the new president of the UVU Off-Road Adventure Club to come (Spencer in his Hummer H3) as well as my uncle (Adam in the Sequoia).
We had a pretty good time but it became obvious that having a diff locker makes life a ton easier. We thought the Sequoia had one but we realized after already being on the trail that this was not the case, so in a lot of situations, as you'll see, he had to bump it or just gun it. And I think for the Sequoia, having that V8 was what got it through without the use of straps. What a brave soul Adam was! Sorry about the bent rear lower link though!

Surprised by the work the h3 did... handled almost better than the FJ! It hurt to watch the sequoia... but from the comments it was properly driven. Glad these guys were having fun, hard to justify being an amateur with such expensive vehicles lol...

We did all have fun and that's what matters! I think how the vehicles handle ultimately comes down to whose driving. If we put swapped the H3 and FJ drivers for example then I think people's observations would have been reversed, because both are capable rigs and handled everything with ease, it all just came down to how much brake or gas the respective drivers were giving on the different spots shown in the video.

sequoia driver jus didn't kno his potential yet guys... I have an 07 sequoia... 4lo in low gear with center diff on... atrac would kick in if he kept his tires spinning at about 1500-2500 rpm... my atrac gets me everywhere my uncle's rear e-locker Tacoma goes

He definitely did well with keeping a nice smooth acceleration through obstacles, pretty good for a first time off-roader! My driving was a little more stop and go, but we all made it through and had fun doing it!

Put the seq. into 4wd low and shift the transmission down to low or 1st gear. That activates the ATRAC system (similar to porche or range rover as is senses slip and applies brakes to the tires that are slipping) then stand back and be surprised how well the tree actually wheels. Youre welcome.

Not all eight tracks are equal different years have different capability. Some years have very simple attracted barely works but it works very slowly. Other years a track is amazing

why all the hate? just go out with your 4x4, get dirty, and have some fun. thats all that matters! everyone has a different setup, truck, and style/skill of driving. itll never be fair to compare one truck vs. the other

Wow I can't believe (yes I can) that Im the first person to say that the Sequoia does have a diff lock (center diff lock), since they are full time 4wd and need a center diff. I ran into this a lot when I was looking for my cruiser I would ask "does it have the diff lockers" (front and rear lockers were optional) and half the people would say "yes it does" to which I would follow up with "is it a button or a dial, oh a button? thanks bye." since the button locks the center diff manually and the dial selects the front or rear lockers. Given the mission of the Sequoia and the trail you tried, im impressed it made it at all. Sorry for being late to the party. I can't wait to run this trail soon.

It looks like he did not lock the center differential on the Sequoia. If you lock the center diff and put it in 4 low, the a-trac will stop the spinning wheels and transfer power to the ones with the most grip. I have seen other sequoias go through and over much worse terrain.

H3 did awesome. Not even a sweat. True to the name. I've owned a number of Jeeps and now an H3. Both capable, but not even the new Jeeps have the refinement of the Hummers. FJ pretty good as well. Sequoias do horrible off road. Seen that first hand.

Great vid, thanks for sharing. I just bought a Sequoia as an all purpose vehicle and I was impressed that it did that well. I haven't done any offroading since the late 90s (other than driving a pickup from location to location in the oilfield) and its neat to see how well some of the modern vehicles do. Great vid!

Nice! That FJ is just a monster. I was suprisingly impressed with the H3. The grocery getting Sequoia shouldn't really be out there. It's out of its element.

I have a h3 as well with 35s, I've gone to some pretty serious spots, even though it does have a small inline 5 the 4x4 low with lockers is amazing you don't have to smash on the gas at all to get up tall obsacles

Yeah modern vehicles have more than enough power to get though pretty much anything from my experience, vs the early Toyota trucks and Jeeps that have smaller 4 cylinder engines and were strained for power at times.

What's up with all the negative talk about the Sequoia, saying it doesn't belong here? With maybe 4 sections as exceptions, the rest of it wasn't even worthy of being considered an off-road trail; more like unpaved roads. It's just amazing what passes for "serious stuff" these days. No mud, everything is dry, the path is laid out. What else was there to do except that at a few spots some geometry was required (and in some places they could've just bypassed them). Sure, the Sequoia doesn't have the "credentials" of the other two, but for the sole fact of it being considered an SUV it needed to prove at least something here. And it sure did that respectfully. So, as far as I'm concerned, the Sequoia looked ok in this environment even if the other 2 could potentially do more.

FJ Legend.. specialist for this situation H3 It's really good but wear out quickly, unfortunately, Sequoia It's a comfortable car for family .. wasn't made for extreme off-road .. need lockers & suitable tires it will be great :)

Right? It would have made a huge difference! There was a "locker" button but all it did was lock it at the transfer case so power to the front and rear axle was constantly equal versus all if it only going to the front or rear. I was confused thinking the locker meant a normal diff locker but that wasn't the case haha

I grew up loving the Hummer but when it came time for me to get a car, the FJ won me over with it's less boxy appearance, dependability, and rich Land Cruiser history/roots.

I have a 2002 Sequoia there is no center lock button on mine. The 8-track and center lock just apparently are supposed to work it goes out of center lock once out of first gear.

@@adventuretrails1ato I believe the 2005-07 are different from prior models, more options to toggle things like the center diff and the traction control. Not sure that 2002 has A-Trac, or even a center diff. Maybe it does, but I just recall steering away from those earlier model years when I bought my 06 about a decade ago because I needed to be able to toggle the center diff to get my boat up my driveway in 4WD low on concrete without all the herky jerky driving 4x4 on pavement.

@@thetube4p the 2002 has a track and a center lock. I'm a veteran off-roader for the last 15 years. Anyways a track has gotten better through The years so 2005 and I'll probably has a better a track than 2002. To be clear. Am I impressed with the 2002 center lock no! But I come from Jeep world. Before this I owned a Nissan Xterra with rear lockers bone stock up on two to three wheels many times! But I plan to put on rear lockers on the Sequoia to bring it up to par!

The only difference between the FJ and the Hummer in this video is how they were driven. I always go slow and I'm cautious on the pedal of the FJ while the person in the Hummer just liked to keep a steady pedal through stuff. Plus it was his first time off-road, and yes he made it through just perfectly and made it look like cake! Good for him! But that doesn't determine that one vehicle is better than the other.

Sequoia has the same 4wd system as LC, with center differential locker. You can see the tire is sliping, it got enough power to move the tire, but due to the city tire, the cannot hold the rock. Another important issue is the sequoia's huge and heavy body.

Toyota Sequoia doesn't have lockers people. You'd think they would know that going into this trail run....geeez. I couldn't stop laughing when the spotters were like "dude is your locker on?" Haha

He had explained that the sequoia had a locker botton, but it wasn’t a differential locker like he thought, it was a transfer case locker 😂 we all learned something that day

@@FJX2000_Productions It's all good. I had to educate a dealer yesterday on a H3 I wanted to buy. He was trying to convince me that the Hummer H3 I was looking at has the adventure package....ya, not so much. The lock on the 4WD is the center diff, there is also 4WD lock on 4 hi as well... He just couldn't get his head around that idea for some reason. The rear diff lock shows a rear differential icon with a tiny lock in it, on the right side of the center diff lock button. I showed him pictures from GMC and he still thinks I'm wrong and he has a Hummer Adventure version of the H3. Oh well.

A lot of capability between these vehicles comes down to tires, lockers, and lift. Those 3 things can completely change a vehicles off-road capability

Thanks, and very true! Another large factory is who is behind the wheel! A good driver or bad driver can really make the difference. An amazing driver with a factory vehicle can do more in some situations than an amateur with $30K in mods.

FJ driver, as a newbie, leave all the features enabled like A trac ext until everything is smooth and then start trial and error.

In both of my FJs, I typically will leave it in 2HI until I get to the loose surfaced roads, then I switch into 4HI. Then if the trail gets more technical or requires slower driving and control, especially if it is an uphill or downhill section, then I switch into 4LO. My personal preference is only to use A-Trac and rear diff lock when I know I will need it or discover I need it. Some folks just keep A-Trac on the whole time, which is fine, but I usually don't engage the traction aids until I know I will need them, like for a specific obstacle.

The H3 seemed to have the better low range option and the front locker, so it was no wonder that it just walked through those sections. The FJ seems to be about as good off road, but with the 4 L V6 it has worse mileage than the H3, at least according to real life tests. The Sequoia is not for real off road use without real lockers. Systems that use vehicle brakes are for softroaders, as they overheat and wear out brakes if used too much. Some systems try to avoid that by disabling the system when used too long continuously. As everything looks easier on a video, the trail was just right for stock trucks. No ordinary Seq owner would try it fearing damage.

I am a member on the fjc forums dot com too, but the MAIN forum for FJ Cruiser owners is the fj cruiser forums dot com, the forum you joined is mainly for southern California specifically, and there is only about 4,200 members on that one while on the fj cruiser forums, there are 68,000 members. So really I wouldn't even bother with the fjc forums and just use the fj cruiser forums.

It was a fun day for sure! And the Hummer did do really well, and that was his first time off-road too! But on the FJ I have a 3" ReadyLIFT spacer lift kit with Light Racing UCAs and the tires are 305/70R16s on the 16x7.5" TRD wheels. And then I also have 1.25" Spidertrax wheel spacers on there and a body mount chop.

Great video! Did y'all reduce the psi on the tires to below 20? That Helps TONS to avoid spinning and get better crawl! Looks like the H3 is the only one with the lockers to get full 50/50 power.

Airbus speaks the truth, you can buy resistors so that the lights flash so people behind you are more aware of you stopping.
