► GRIS Story Synopsis
Gris is a hopeful young girl lost in her own world, dealing with a painful experience in her life. Her journey through sorrow is manifested in her dress, which grants new abilities to better navigate her faded reality. As the story unfolds, Gris will grow emotionally and see her world in a different way, revealing new paths to explore using her new abilities.
GRIS is a serene and evocative experience, free of danger, frustration or death. Players will explore a meticulously designed world brought to life with delicate art, detailed animation, and an elegant original score. Through the game light puzzles, platforming sequences, and optional skill-based challenges will reveal themselves as more of Gris’s world becomes accessible.
GRIS is an experience with almost no text, only simple control reminders illustrated through universal icons. The game can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of their spoken language.

This game is such a beautiful piece. The artwork, the colour scheme, the music man... all of it is gorgeous. Bonus point for Welonz playing it! :D

If this is truly a story about grief, then I think it's safe to say the final part of the game (walking up the constellation into the heavens) is about letting go. Where you accept that this person you loved so much would want you to be happy, whether or not you're with them. And that is symbolised best when the statue's hand moves you closer to the path. To show you it's okay to move on without them.

Finding all of the mementos (light circles) is totally worth it. There is an awesome and touching cutscene that reveals more about the story of the game if you find all of them and sing in hidden room of the central hub.

This game is so stunningly beautiful, the colours, the artwork, the superb sound design and music, got me really in the feels at several points in the story. Thanks for sharing your playthrough with us Welonz, really enjoyed watching this.

This is a nice personal experience. You can see so much care went into art and music. The gameplay is simple and accessible enough, with right presentation, length and variation to make it memorable. Yeah, it's lovely sweet game, I like it, good chill time.

I think you're right about the eel symbolism. She's not just any loved one. She's your mother.

This was probably the best game I've played. And I am so lucky, that I happen to be around in those great times of existence. And thank You, Welonz, for playing this game. I believe, that it deserves all of the possible attention out there in the world, as it's message, as simple it might seem, actually is deep and important, and it's ways of delivering this message is something classical in the gaming and art in general. Maybe not revolutional, but classical, as Journey, for example, as it feels much like it took at least some of it's inspiration in Journey.

My favorite part might just be when the turtle saves you. I like turtles. I like the earlier parts, when you're playing with a simple palette in the sky (even though red is my least favorite color), and I like the rain.

Short but sweet. This is a wonderful experience and, while it may not be the hardest game ever made, there is enough to make it interesting to play at least twice.

The spark of human feeling is rekindled. The flame, though small, feels overwhelming in its long forgotten warmth. The shattered pieces are set back in place. Rebirth.

I think they’re thinking of a galaxy, but the word “universe” comes to mind first because it’s more widely used.

So there's a long, well-informed explanation post on Steam that I suggest checking. Two things that one must take into consideration before trying to come up with an interpretation are: 1) The devs said they wanted to address a theme video games rarely or never address. 2) They said it's a theme that relates to women in particular and they interviewed a number of them to get feedback about sensitivity issues. Death or grief due to the loss of a loved one don't qualify for either point. It's something else entirely.

My interpretation is that gris is a game about the loss of a child The statue is the mother And in the game the statues of the mother were doing different poses like crying collapsing, these are like flashbacks of episodes that mother going through grief. In the end she was having thoughts of joining her daughter so she attempted suicide as visualized by the darkness consuming her the black represents (death, depression, suicide) After that she accepted it she could finally let go You the main character Well you are dead The main character is dead you are in purgatory and you are trapped because of the grief of your mother Once she accepted it you are free she gives a kiss goodbye to her mother aka statue as the statue cry a single tear drop. She climb to the constellations stairs to that white light representing her crossing Now you probably asking "14n how did you know it's purgatory ?" Did you notice that you can't die or their no enemies in the game except for 1 well The reason why you can't die in this game YOU ARE ALREADY DEAD And the reason why their no enemies in this game except for 1 THEIR NO ENEMIES IN PURGATORY

I got the same thoughts here. I think you are right.

Eividas Krikštaponis when I came up this interpretation I asked this question what does purgatory look like.my answer is it's not scary.purgatory or the inbetween is like a abstract painting like from the movie the lovely bones

The secret ending sheds more light about the story. But yeah, they're Mother and Daughter (Gris isn't the name of the character like most people assume). I suggest to check a long post on Steam that analyzes the game. And also reveals two crucial points: 1) The devs said the theme of the game is rarely seen in video games (so not just death or grief). 2) The devs said it's a theme that mostly concerns women and womanhood and they interviewed several women to get feedback about it.

You really should do Metal Gear Solid series sometime in the future, such an amazing bizarre story in those games.

I think the statue is representing her mother. The colors of the different stages could represent the stages of grief after she's lost her mother. Idk man, just a theory :/

Hey welonz, if you're taking suggestions you should consider make a series on a text based story driven game with different story branches called And The Sun Went Out. The game has an interesting story (part of it takes place on Canada) and characters , and I just think it would be cool to see a thoughtfull playthroug and you witty commentary about it. And besides That it's free, but for mobile tho.

Your idea is pretty spot on to the main consensus on what Gris is about. It is backed up even more with a secret cutscene that I recommend you watch on RU-vid or find in game if you haven’t already.
