This happens every time they do this- market forces equalize the singles to the price of the supply, so the obvious Chase Cards take the lions' share of that value.
I’m glad it’s not just me who thought something felt off with New Capenna foils. Compared to NEO kamigawa, my full art lands foils for example popped real well.I figured something went wrong because of the nature of the gilded foils being made as well?
@@theindyjt Bottom and backside of boxes states where printed: USA, Belgium or Japan. Underneath the fold on boosters. For my location Western Canada our pre-release packs tend to be from Japan so you get all excited by flatness, brightness, sparkle etc. and then you open a few US packs and the excitement immediately disappears.
49:55 "I never would have guessed strixhaven was a set where..." Man prof, doing all these boxes has got you loopy, You've confused Streets of New Capenna with Strixhaven
I don’t entirely subscribe to the “packs are for draft” mentality. Usually every set I don’t look at any spoilers, then buy a set booster box at prerelease. Just because I like cracking packs! It’s fun, and it’s usually my first time seeing all of the cards. I get a bunch of cool cards, and use those to determine what decks I wanna build and THEN buy singles to fill them out.
I do something similar, but I won't lie, it's still disappointing to open a box and get nothing worth more than a couple bucks even if value wasn't the main consideration. Thankfully that's been the exception rather than the rule for me personally though.
Obviously Set Boosters are not for draft. Still, on average even with your method you're left with a looooot of cards you'll never use. It's magnitudes less efficient than buying singles. Unless you value the experience of opening packs itself, which you seem to do, and it's perfectly fine and Prof has said so multiple times. It's just not the most rational way of getting the cards you need.
I think people also forget that there are people who are fairly new to mtg (coming up a year of playing for me), and don't have the boxes and boxes of bulk to easily fill out decks. I'm starting to get to the point where I'm happy with my bulk, but I like building it up 🙂
Box 2, pack 6, you pulled a Ziatora's Proving Ground but didn't add the value to the total. You only added the Blood moon to the total from that pack. Timestamp @16:08 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VU87uFoFygY.html
So Wizards can't seem to make bright foils without curving. With that, I'll take this slight-foiling and the bonus of having cards that can be played without needing to research humification techniques.
It seems like the good/new land cards are frequently the top cards in any given set. I guess that’s better than having busted chase-rares, but I do wish good mana-bases weren’t so expensive…
The good thing here is that as they keep printing good lands, there will eventually be enough of them that at least a B-tier mana base could be affordable. Hopefully.
@@SafePondDemon @ me who just wants all 3 Eldrazi Titans for my own satisfaction, got a box of Eldritch moon yesterday and no Emrakul 😭 I did get Tree of Perdition tho so that's something at least
yeah i was very disappointed when i saw box 1 barely crack the 110 and $40 of that was Diving Top. As I already own one, no motivation to pick up a box of these. Ill grab some singles and save myself $75
5:35 It's funny, I also thought the foils were subdued this set on the USA printed cards, but I did appreciate when I got a bundle that the 20 foil lands weren't a snack stack of Pringles that even sleeved and face down could be reliably identified as foils by their curvature.
Gotta love how it is just "Did you get Top and an Ob?" or bust I wonder if the foils you got were made on the Etched paper on accident since those tend to be more muted and the etching is what makes them pop.
I still remember saving up for a box of Aether Revolt, and how disappointed I was when it turned out like that last box. I got $30 of value tops. Lesson? BUY SINGLES!
This set was extremely fun in sealed, and I love the flavor and art. The value outside of the lands and a couple other cards is terrible though. Fun is what I play for though, so I'm a fan of this set.
@@Kyagrez looking back it appears I was incorrect in most cases. The card at 7:20 is the one that I first noticed and that appears to be a regular Showcase foil but most of the other ones were correct. Thanks for keeping me honest 😀
Of the 150 packs opened, 37 of them had List cards which is about 25%. This is the rate advertised by Wizards but it doesn’t hurt to double check it. Ever since my first set of List card were hitters such as Glimmermoth, Dungeon Shade and Fomori Nomad I’ve been skeptical of it, but I think the Universes Within cards have helped a lot in making The List more interesting. How do people feel about The List for New Capenna or just generally?
Last box was pretty much what mine was. It was still fun though since I can make use of all the cards since I am just now getting into the game. The kids and I can have fun, even with the unwanted cards!
I don't have the data to back this up... But it sure feels like we've never seen a set with such a large disparity between the set boosters EV and the draft boosters EV.
It's called "conditioning" and it's only going to get worse. Until one product line gets totally cut off. and i can garauntee it won't be the product that has more packs and sells for less...
Love watching your box game videos! Super jealous of all the sensei's divining tops since I have a ninja deck and it's a pricey card. Also I agree with you on those foils. Had a hard time while sorting my collection and saw a stark contrast between foils from last set to this one. They seem a little dull/thin for the foil coating
It may be a weird comment but I just want to say a massive thanks for the way you speak in your videos. Mouth always visible, you form your words extremely clearly, and your pacing is great. As a severely hard of hearing person, your videos are my go-tos for my MtG content. Thanks
I think maybe they're using a different foiling process to try to address the pringle foil problem. The foils from New Capenna seem to be less curvy to me. Foils curve because the paper expands or contracts based on humidity, but the plastic foiling on the front of the card does not. If they're using a different material for the foiling that maybe isn't as pretty, but doesn't curl as badly that might be a tradeoff that I'm willing to take.
To elaborate, I have some foils from draft boosters (the ones that came in my pre-release packs and as rewards for playing pre-release). The gilded ones are fine (hat include the promos) as far as curvature but while the gilding is shiny the rest of the foiling is lackluster. Then the non-gilded foils are super shiny but they're curved. (Interestingly curved in the opposite direction that foils normally curve.) But all my foils from set boosters are lackluster in the shininess of the foils (though some still look really nice if not overly bright) but they are just as flat as the rest of the cards and show no signs of curve.
Man it's so weird now that all these cool alt frames don't do much for their value anymore, saturation i guess... Also, disheartening that the cats that were a big chunk of value were the lands.
@@TolarianCommunityCollege it's definitely more fun to watch you chain boxes together. that being said... BUY SINGLES!!! lol thanks for all the good videos and good vibes prof.
One thing I do like about the set is how inexpensive most of it is. Like if you wanted to buy anything from the set in singles you very well likely can, but if you wanted to bring out with the gilded art foils THATS gonna cost you. But at least its not the game pieces themselves
Professor, as an idea you might could think about, you should include the "soundtrack" music from MTG for the various sets when you open the boosters. I don't know the dynamics of how that works, but they release it all on their channel and a lot of it is really, really good! They have full instrumental versions, etc. and the last two soundtracks have had some solid bops, as the kids say.
I mostly get booster packs for the fun of it with a slight hope to get the cards I want. But, I'm still in the stage of edh where I'm wanting to build more decks and having a diversity of cards just helps me in finding new strategies.
I really liked that too. I'd much rather pull a Universes Within card (even if the price on them is low now) than a 10¢ common from the list. I also grabbed a full set of the Universes Within for a decent price.
It happens..... I really like the look of this set. I just bought some singles, but I am still awaiting my preorder. I don't want to splurge on anything without at least seeing what I pulled first.
it's so sucky that the foils in the last set were like REALLY foily and bright and then we get to this set and they're dull and just kind of... meh? WotC must be on overdrive and using different printers from set to set with the inconsistency we've had which is just so terrible especially when you consider how they're raising prices while quality control remains at perhaps an all time low. we either get and incredible product that looks and feels great or we get cards that are clearly not up to par with card game standards. that being said, always enjoy these videos regardless of the set or issues or whatever the heck is going on in magic or the world.
I bought a booster box with the oversized die and 8 packs. I pulled a Ziatora, the Incinerator guilded foil on my first pack. Craziest pull of my life. market price of $68.58
nice pulls, behold the power of the blood moon, though its noticeable that majority of the value comes from the list pulls which doesn't come from the base set, the only ones from the set with good value over time are the tri-color lands that complete the triomes/tri-cycle set.
Idk how I feel about this set, especially for draft, it's feel very difficult to get any kind of focused deck when each color is trying to three different things.
I love the flavor (and will be using a ton of cards from it in Commander decks), but drafting it wasn't great, especially compared to other recent sets.
Haven't started drafting yet, but Sealed is/was really fun. But in pretty much every other format (esp. Constructed) it does feel a bit bad. Maybe it's just because the formats have gotten so fast, 3 colors is just not a big deal. Or maybe it's just that NEO was so good it ruined SNC for us
I split a box with somebody and got a Bootleggers' Stash, a showcase tri land, and a halo fountain. So I'm pleased, lots of cards though have tons of text on them. Still kind of new to the game again, but some cards were just ridicilous in how much text was used to explain its effect.
I use a box or 2 for coming up with deck ideas. I end up using quite a few cards I pull, so I'm not too worried about the lost money. But once I got deck ideas, I get singles to fill out the rest of my decks
Your first box was eerily similar to my box. Excepting the List slots, of course. In my case, I only got one actual List card; the rest were the Friends Forever reprints.
Seems like they helped the curling problem by using a heavier foil, but they have far less luster. I've been able to leave these foils out unsleeved without any curling
Watching your box opening videos always reminds me how much cheaper it is to play Magic in the US as opposed to other countries. Cards you're listing at $1 sell around here at the $4-5 mark.
And how crazy is it that most of the value cards came from the list? I mean I love pulling a Sensei's Divining top but geez. Says a lot about a set I think.
I know Prof opened a box with whatever set that originally had Top in it just before NEO and I think he pulled at least as many from this video as he did from that box. wild
The foil issue illustrates something that I can't quite quantify, but that I figured I'd share. My 19-yr old son and I splurged and got a War of the Spark booster box last week. I've never opened a pack for the set and my interest in Magic started just after. I opened the first pack and went "Woah...these cards feel different." He has cards throughout Magic's history, so he shrugged it off, but I was taken by how different the cards felt. They just feel more...tangible. Like I said, I'm struggling to quantify the difference, but comparing current cards to that experience, there's definitely a quality change.
I got roughly 85 dollars in value out of cards from the set. Another 85 dollars of value came out of the Vampiric Tutor, Exquisite Blood, and Rafiq the Many I got from the list slots. Definitely a weird box but I'm pretty happy with it.
I'd like to see a " Count your Pennie's and the dollar will follow " video. Seeing as how so many upticked commons and foil and uncommons get that extra pause 🙋♂️
personally i think the foil dullness adds to legibility. ive played loads of games where i couldnt see let alone read what cards i had played from almost any angle. but i do love me a foil i tell you what
I actually really like this set. Some buddies and I are getting into magic and wanna get a box for some drafts and too add to new players collection, this might be the one! Ty for playin prof, pulled my planeswalker first box;)
The jund triome at 16:09 was never added to the total of box 2 the chime for it didn't even go off pack value went from 27.81 then the blood moon was adding the 11ish dollars
I don't know if it's too much work, but I think it would be cool if you could put something like some small arrows pointing up/down next to the prices of the cards from box #2 onward, to see how the prices change from day to day.
Just some fun math I did, the TOTAL total is $542.82, $153.57 of which was from "The List" cards alone. That's about 28% of the total value, which means over one 4th was from cards outside the set.
the money here seems super concentrated in the list + a few cards from the set with real value. this is probably good for the game and singles prices but it's still kinda wild
