Lets “Read & Talk about Gemmology!”
On Sunday June 23rd 2021 we had have the pleasure to welcome Emmanuel Fritsch as our new guest for our monthly event. We asked him to tell us about the behind the scene stories about the three articles he wrote with Prof G. Rossman that was published in 1988 in 3 different issues of Gems & Gemology (They are available as pdf on GIA website) and that I strongly recommend as reading these articles were very useful to me during my gemology studies.
Dr. Emmanuel Fritsch is a professor of physics at the university of Nantes in France. He holds a geological engineering degree from the ENSG, Nancy, France, and a Ph.D. from the Sorbonne in Paris. He worked for nearly ten years at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in the USA, where he became a Graduate Gemologist (GG), and was promoted manager of GIA Research from 1992 to 1995. His research is currently conducted at the Institut des Matériaux Jean Rouxel (IMN-CNRS) in Nantes, France. Dr. Fritsch interests range wide, from laboratory techniques applied to gemology, to color and luminescence in gems (especially diamonds), geographical origin, treated and synthetic gems, opals and pearls. His self-assigned mission is to make gemology more scientific. He has authored over 350 articles, eighteen book chapters, a book on the gems from Mogok in 2018, and given over 350 conferences all over the world, both scientific and popular. He is responsible for the DUG (Diplôme d’Université de Gemmologie) diploma. He has received many awards, including the 2013 Bonnano Award for Excellence in Gemology, and is one of the three honorary fellows of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain.

Is it Emanuel in this talk, which have described/"invented" the typical "needle"/tube inclusions in spinel from Vietnam and others sources, as "dislocation needles"? I have always wanted to learn more about these inclusions as I see them so often here in Vietnam, and in particular the purple, lilac, lavender and blue variations. Thx
