Welcome to "Field Gemology by Vincent Pardieu". My name is Vincent Pardieu. I'm a gemologist and after working for several gemological laboratories (AIGS, Gubelin and GIA), I became a consultant in 2017. The purpose of this channel is to share videos of gemological interest from the field expeditions i continue to lead to colored gemstone mining areas around the World or from some webinars we had during Covid (when traveling to the field was not possible). Enjoy and thanks for your interest and support!
Regarding the frustrations with finding the right medium to reach different audiences, its an endless challenge. Its frustrating. Your videos--starting w/ the GIA ones--are what got me looking more closely at gemology and though I've now seen hundreds of videos, its always your videos I come back to. Now I have to find your papers! Thanks for posting this interview.
Yes, some of the rubies produced at Aaapaluttoq are indeed suitable for jewelry either as beads, cabochons and also faceted stones. Only a small minority were preserved intact as specimens. You can actually see stones for Jewelry from the Aappaluttoq ruby mine on www.greenlandruby.gl and on ruby.gl and on
Does heat treatment heal the fractures in the ruby? Pretty awesome discovery. You should do a video on how they mine the rubies and also how they extract them from the rock
Yes, the reason why rubies from Greenland benefit from heat treatment is that heat treatment will (when it is done with borax) heal the fractures and also (when it is done in oxydizing conditions) make the stones brighter and remove the possible purplish overtone common in iron rich stones. Furthermore heat treatment can also help to remove some of the milky aspect of these rubies. Hoping that will help,
Hi Vincent, will you have more field trip videos soon now with the pandemic over? I first found you through the GIA videos some years ago and would love to see much more. cheers!
Well thanks for your interest. No idea if I will produce more videos after the pandemic. First I need to find a way to travel again to gem producing areas and then I need to find a way to finance these expeditions and these videos. So far without the support of some big lab like the GIA this is difficult. So we will see.
That lady is a genius!!! I have the books and I really adore miss Antoinette Matlins's work in gemology! She is a great author and made an excellent contribution for culture. Thanks for all the excellent people that made this video.
Awesome video! Geologist Hashim here from West Pokot, wonder how you guys didn't find me. Did my Degree thesis on these rubies, exact location back in 2015. Dubbed "Genesis of Gem Corundum in Nakirogon; Amakuriat; Alale Marbles- North Pokot." Unpublished though.
Hummm I would be very interested to read that. No idea why we didn't met you there. Probably you were somewhere else during the few days we took to visit West Pokot. All the best,
Hi Vincent.I am a turkish civil engineer.I am living in New Zealand currently.I have been interesting Genstones since not too far. After that, it has not been hard to find you.Because you were every video that related to gemstones. Thanks to you, I got lots of information about gems.I would like to ask you that are there any gemstones such as saphires, rubies or emeralds in Turkey or New Zealand?I hope to meet you one day.Are you planning to come to New Zealand?
Hello, thanks for your kind comment even if it is in my opinion a bit too kind. Anyway, there are few sapphires and (non gem quality) rubies in New Zealand. On the Turkish side there is diaspore. All the best,
I love Vincent's videos, however I suggest to edit these shows. 3 hours is kind of long. I would like to see some pics of the gems being discussed, etc ... early in the video, over a long intro.
Thanks for your kind comment. I'm happy to read that you love our videos. That said, I don't plan to edit any of these videos. Video making takes time and is costly. Sadly these days I'm short in both. We do these videos just for the pleasure to stay in touch with friends, work on positive regular projects and get inspired despite the current pandemic and travel restrictions. We decided not to do like others and restrict them at 1 hour. It seems that people interested in them don't really mind to listen them in two or three parts. All the best, ;-)
Great product, Vincent! If I may suggest, it would also be nice to have the case made of Aluminum or Pelican Case type for extreme durability in the field. The leather case looks like you are carrying a lot of cash!:))
I thought about that but... I don't like Pelican cases because if we do this case as Pelican it will not fit in my luggages. Aluminium would be something to consider, but well that it will be too shiny for my taste. I enjoy brown type colours in the field. And again: This is not something to show off in the street. This is more a case to keep hidden inside my big luggage in order to work on my samples in the evening in my hotel when I do my admin and when I prepare my exports.
