Welcome to the Fall of Gondolin! The third of the three 'Lost Lays of Beleriand.'
As with the 'Children of Hurin' and 'Beren & Luthien' before, we start with a preface from Christopher Tolkien - the editor and curator of his father's works. This preface differs significantly from the preface in the previous two books and does contain very useful information and a perspective, from which, you can approach the Fall of Gondolin with a greater sense of clarity.
The Fall of Gondolin is rather self-explanatory as far as a story goes: Initially we are presented with the wanderings of Tuor and Voronwe and their coming to Gondolin, as well as the later treachery of Maeglin who betrays the kingdom of Turgon to Morgoth. This all happens concurrently to the exploits of Turin Turambar in the Children of Hurin - this is especially poignant because both of these books feature the sackings of the two great Elven kingdoms in Beleriand: Nargothrond and Gondolin following the decisive 'Battle of Unnumbered Tears' that saw the death of Huor and the capture of Hurin (think of it like Tolkien's own "sacking of Corinth and Carthage - 136 B.C." for the history nerds here.) The events of that battle - detailed in PART 2 of the Children of Hurin located on this channel - serve as the catalyst for the subsequent 'Fall of Gondolin.'
Please enjoy.
