You are an artist Mr Ron. The way you bring these playfields to life again is amazing. I think the difference between how you do it and a full restore to as new is that your "restores" keep the character of the machine. Every one of these games has a story to tell and you let the machine tell it's story. These are not new games, they are not meant to look brand new. Keep the "patina" .
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 3 года назад
I agree 100% what's the use in making them new (even if I could) then they wouldn't be very good compared to a brand new one, part of the value of them is that they have age.

On black colors, yes, most have an "overcast" to them. A blue overcast is not the only one. You can also have a slight orange overcast too, which makes sense since really dark brown can appear black as well. With computer colors, for instance, brown is just a dark orange.

Just make sure you clean the area really good first with a magic eraser or naphtha or something because if you try to clearcoat over wax it will bubble up. I clean the whole area just before I start painting it so I never have that issue but trying to fix up a table you're not taking all the way down is a little different....

I had an interesting observation when you were describing the optical illusion of the black bringing out more green in the yellow paint --- I was watching this on my phone with a "comfort view" blue-light filter on, and the green actually came across more pronounced than in "full" color! I sincerely doubt it's worth splitting hairs over since you can't really make it out under normal circumstances, but it makes me wonder if using filters like that might help with color-matching.

If it were me, and not criticizing, I'd apply bleach in spots before painting, but it all depends on the amount of peeling and planking. If that is bad, then no. But if you peel where you are already repainting, that's different and may be preferable since it would then appear more even when finished. So it is all about what works best per situation.

Hi Ron great job btw. anyway it`s killing me what are you using to clear just an acrylic spray or are you using something like krylon triple thick? I know putting way to much thought into this lol
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 3 года назад
We use Krylon crystal clear spray paint, you don't want to use triple thick because it's pretty soft so the ball will eventually wear through it. The harder the better, the absolute best thing to use is automotive clear coat but that's pretty hardcore, it's very durable though, lol. But just go get regular krylon clear spray paint at the hardware store, I use satin, it has a similar finish to the original clear.

I currently own a gottlieb count down. The playfield is in very very good condition but... The previous owner didn't put it good enough and it has creases in the mylar, also the inserts are pitted. Would you keep it original or try and pry everything off and possibly damage it way more? I play a game every second day, and I am no Pro pinball player and I think I will keep it original. Just want to hear your thoughts.Btw excellent video. Keep it up.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 3 года назад
I would definitely leave it alone, it's very hard to remove the mylar and not really damage the paint, especially on an older game. It can be done but it takes somebody better than me to pull it off, when they're old like that the finish of the playfield is actually cracked everywhere (look close and you'll see it) and when you pull that mylar even if you do it very slowly some of those cracked pieces will pull off with it, you'll have bare wood all over the place. I'd leave it, and years down the road somebody who really knows their stuff might be able to take the time to remove it, just play it and have fun with it.
