The, “why don’t you just buy a new boat…”comment is really thoughtless and annoying. If Uma were a 50 year old car or a 100 year old house, no one would be asking this questions. Just because some of you can’t appreciate the challenges and learning opportunities of a project like this doesn’t mean others don’t.

The one thing i havent seen considered by the new boat vs retrofit people is that unless you have a custom boat built you are getting much more quality by what you are doing. Even the more expensive builders cut as much cost as they can. There is no substitute for knowing your boat from the bilge up. You KNOW what you have. I was in the new boat camp before you started the build but since you decided to tackle this and do it right I dont think there is any arguing that you will end up with a much better boat than anything you could buy short of, again, a custom build.

As a non-boater that has developed an unusual interest in boats I think from some of the posting by real boaters is similar to the RV industry of late. There is a lot of emphasis on glitz that is relatively cheap and less quality in the build. I suspect this is more likely in "production" models as apposed to custom but even (again as in the RV industry) custom builders can cut the wrong corners.

Great idea to log all the details that you are aware of, the science behind your choices, inside as well as out, will be so illuminating when contrasted and compared to the original function. ❤ I'm an older Canadian woman from the Alberta Prairie and your videos all make perfect sense to me. I've read so much about seafaring and lost at sea stories and I've learned a lot watching my sailing channels. I am mechanically inclined myself and so I get a lot of what you and Brian from Delos talks about. He is a master jack of all trades and I can see you guys being that way too. They and you are my favorite. I so so so can't wait till you're back on the water again because I want to see how she turns out and how everything works out on board for you. Matt is the perfect guy to rebuild a foam core racing boat. He’s already familiar and equipped with the proper process and tools for heavy composite work. Duracell could be an open ocean rocket with a doghouse when they’re done. It’ll be interesting to see how much speed they keep in her when it comes to sail plan, etc. I’m glad Dan and Kika have kept the scope within their particular skills and needs. Uma Ver 2 is going to be a gorgeous small Goldilocks home for them.

My guess is Uma will slim down by at least 500kg when you ditch all the stuff from the V-berth, the storm anchor, the generator and gas for that, extra water, the wood and fireplace, tools, and build lighter furniture and it might be closer to 1ton lighter!

As this is an displacement hull sailboat that does not necessarily have to be a good thing. It can get slower caused by the shorter waterline. (and have harsher movement is rough seas.)

You two have McGivered that boat so many times... and I have enjoyed watching you design and engineer each phase of Uma's development. I remember the original keel work, the install of the forklift motor, and all of the various structural and design improvements you've tackled throughout the years. This time, after having stripped Uma down to the hull, you're going to be able to solve so many of the issues that have bothered you throughout the years. And as was the case when you went electric way before it became fashionable, I'm sure some of the solutions you come up in terms of structure and serviceability will be equally innovative.

The wood discussion and stove made me appreciate the 20 acres of trees I harvest out of. 90% of it is red oak. The other 10% is softer Maple and Gum with limited yellow pine. I don't cut the pine, if it drops limbs I will use it as kindling. But as a home builder, retired, we did consider weight all the time. Hot water tanks, stairs, refrigerator, 2nd story load transfers to the foundation were all considerations. One thing most people overlook is the weight of books in bookcases. If seen bookcases break 2x10 floor joist. So we don't worry about total house weight, true, we do consider getting that weight on a solid foundation.

I don't or won't ever sail since I'm nearly 70 and get sea sick easily. LOL I traveled 9 years in a motorhome and got interested in the technical similarities as I followed the Wynns transition from RV to boat life. I vicariously sail as I subscribe to (too) many boater sites. Your site has become my favorite. This episode just engages the techie in me. It was really well done and easy to grasp the concepts you touched on. I've enjoyed past issues about demo, reglassing and such. I'm actually excited to see the future episodes as you continue the refurb. Looking forward to when you can float it (the beginning of the end?) and when you can cruise it. BE WELL!

Was kinda cool to see my comment made it into a video! :D I was thinking that most of what was in the boat would go back into it when you are done, but it sounds like you're planning to leave an awful lot of it behind, and otherwise _are_ keeping weight (and trim) in mind when selecting materials for the interior. Totally agree with your assertion that its a cruising boat and it doesn't make sense to save every gram; just also don't want it to go too far the other way. You've obviously got a handle on it, consider my fears relieved! :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts! P.S. Super excited for the discussion on possible synthetic rigging when you get there.

For heating / cooling you could get a small boat heat pump ac/heater. Should be much more efficient than resistive heat.

There is no amount of money that cannot be spent on a boat refit. Everything is a compromise. Their are an amazing amount of choices to heat/cool a boat...only some of them are remotely affordable. I love having a heat pump for nearly trouble-free "day to day:" climate control yet would never give up my "dwarf 3K" solid-fuel stove from the tiny woodstove company. I collect small pieces of wood every day like others might look for shells or sea glass. When the mood strikes...I light a fire. It is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

You guys have it nailed! Well considered and explained, especially the slider description. One added benefit is safety with your specific waterproof bulkheads which are well epoxied to the hull. Thanks for sharing.

Over 3 years of sailing from L. Ontario to the Bahamas I loaded my boat down enough that I went from passing most other sailboat to being passed. You are making the right decisions with the diet.

Excellent video. Thank you for the explanations and it's been really cool to watch this process. From other sail boat channels I've seen that a little extra weight can aid in the comfort by carrying momentum through a wave. Where a lighter boat slows down with every wave and can make the passage difficult to endure.

Agree! Even though I am old enough to remember ounces, pounds, stones and tons (and pounds, shillings, pence, ha’pennies and farthings not to mention rods, poles and perches or chains, furlongs, miles, knots and all the rest) and the painful mental gymnastics required to calculate using those measures, I am so grateful that Dan expressed almost everything in the much easier to work-with metric measurements. If only the USA and the other 2 nations (and a half - UK I’m looking at you too, regarding that piecemeal and unecessarily slow conversion) using those horrible old measures would grow some balls and convert (fully).

You certainly explain the weight amount and distribution of the weight very well. I am not a sailor , however weight vs power is applicable in many different types of sports. Thanks for another great video about your process. Your design training is shining through in your appreciation of all design being a series of compromises, and you explanation of the relative importance of weight in racing and cruising boats is spot on and well done. As you observed, it's likely to be far more important how you distribute the weight you put back in than how the raw numbers compare with what you took out (on that front, great idea to move the batteries over the keel, where they'll be working for you rather than against you in controlling pitching moments). I have two respectful suggestions for you (both of which you've probably thought of already, but just in case). First, if you're getting charged by the kilo for throwing stuff out, see if you can get an accurate weight of the garbage bags, so you can use that as a partial measure of how much weight she's lost. Second is a respectful suggestion about where NOT to save weight. I wholeheartedly agree with your decision to use plywood instead of laminated foam cores, but I couldn't help smiling that you guys did your entire presentation in front of a plywood bulkhead that appears to be uncovered by any coating at all. I'm sure you're way ahead of me here, but speaking as someone who has spent too much time digging punky plywood out of dark boat corners, I have to say PLEASE don't leave it (or any other covered wood) uncoated. When you're done with this project, I'll bet you'll have a boat that's stiff, strong, safe, comfortable, and considerably faster, than the one Bill Shaw designed, if you balance her right. It's great fun following your work, and I have enormous respect for how you're conducting it, but it would be a heartbreaker to have to redo a big chunk of it in a few years because water penetration has turned some critical parts to mush.
