Uk comedian Billy Connolly said once “the desire for that much power should serve as immediate disqualification”. That phrase has always stuck with me.
He's right, but sadly the truth is people have constantly handed over total power to demagogues who they are misled to believe they "agree" with. History is littered with examples. Actually, I'd say we have more cows than people. This is a state with a lot of very rich people, controlling the rest of us and telling us to be grateful.
That's an important point. There are some incredibly sparsely populated states, that probably don't have enough people to legitimately qualify to be a state. Maybe we should consider redefining what a state is.
Sorry, but I am not going to hold my breath waiting for conservatives to do the right thing. We have had 4+ years of evidence showing that they are not willing to do so.
That Lt Gov's latest move was applauded by a loved one of mine living in Idaho. Why? "She doesn't let anyone tell her what to do." And I said, "She's elected. She supposed to do what *you* tell her to do." .... Still no reply to that message. And it makes me afraid.
Wow. Just wow. It makes me afraid too. Your loved one is just willing to simply hand over all their autonomy to a crazy person based on a silly premise. The fact that no higher priciples like honor, truth, justice, intelligence, empathy, etc. animates them is really sad.
it doesn't matter that it is nonsense and it will be undone in days. next election she will bang on about it and the trumpers will support this failure. this will make her look good to anyone who cheered jan 6 and trump.
That's exactly what's happening. Their party is being overrun. And there are large donors actively endorsing the people overrunning it. I think that instead of the cruelty, it's the chaos that's the actual point. Manufactured chaos can tear apart the foundations of any democracy if sustained long enough. And quite a few people seem to be banking on that very thing.
Their party is already overrun. That ship has sailed. If 2 impeachments and an insurrection weren't enough to drive the point home I don't know what room they've got for fixing this themselves.
You are absolutely, 100% correct. Accountability is a fading memory. Actually there really hasn't been any accountability since Nixon resigned. We the people have been unrepresented for generations and both parties have been benefitting from the ignorance that grows like mold in a society that does not care to educate.
Hey neighbor! I got to Spokane in like '98, right? Right when they busted up the Aryan Nation day camp up here. A lot of people I met around then thought that was too harsh. So it wasn't too purple then, and it's only gotten redder. It feels like it's maybe started purpling since this last summer, as the hospitals filled up and the workers started staying home, but before that it was a lot of coal-rolling, hate criming proud ignorance, from what I could tell.
Once, when I was a kid, late 70s, northern Idaho had pretty strong labor unions. Helped to put our last Dem governor in office- Cecil Andrus. Not trying to excuse the presence of the aryan nation compound.
It needs to be said more often. Leftist youtube has been doing it since the start, but I actually see it being used more on MSNBC of all places. And then the fascists come in and like to say, "fascism doesn't even mean anything anymore lol, anyone who disagrees with me is a fascist" and other pretend it just means "gubbamint is mean." Means what it always did. A far-right ideology opposed to all forms of the left, believes liberal democracy is obsolete, opposed to liberal enlightenment values (that the US was based on) and aims to achieve a totalitarian one-party state, combining nationalism with racism and bigotry against the poor, disabled, lgbt and religious minorities considered the "out-groups." Highly militarized with expanded, near total authority given to law enforcement. It calls for a return to greatness, a conservative and mythologized version of the nation. Republicans, basically, and trump, definitely.

@@kevinmcconnell9426 it's important to go way back when discussing fascism. At least to the mid 1800's to point close to the root. Before it earned its name or had any power, so that people observing who end up looking it up and learning more can see how it starts under classical liberalism, that mixes with fears of overcrowding (never possible. We have spaceflight. We can now expand infinitely $$$$ pricy but doable) and with fears of weakness or excuses of the cruelty of homelessness being written off with "social Darwinism" or its modern equivalents like "welfare queens" and "lazy bums" and they are lies just like they where back then. From there they slowly add more. Like the birds and bull hypothesis of economics (feed the seed to the bull, the birds can eat the seeds at the other end, aslo called trickle down economics), then calling for "party unity" to be strong, then start calling for isolationism and nationalism, etc etc all the way until most of the 13 features of fascism are present, and it's too late. That also. Ya know. Tells a story that people can relate to, they can start to connect dots within thier own ideologies and they can start to see things more clearly.

I know its hard to stomach what the extremist GOP do as a democrat, I cant imagine how much worse it has to be if you once were a proud party member of the GOP and youve watched it become a beacon for the absolute worst American citizens. Good Luck to those who still are reasonable and rational in the GOP trying to deliver reason and rationale.
They've had years of opportunity to stand up and holler about the naked emperor, but they never did. Even as he was being impeached, they staunchly defended him. Only the Lincoln Project Republicans took a stand for what is moral. I have no time for anyone else in that party.
They live in a information bubble that erodes your perspective of reality. The person could be a reasonable human being but fed with distorted information during 20 years they lose connection with reality.
I have and do believe in good ethics, good standards, good principles, good morals, honesty, no matter the political party, but while the republicans claim to be of this, I do not see it in action. They claim 1 thing and do the opposite.
She is only doing what Trump did hei is still standing has faced no negative consequences. Not even charged for crimes committed. So why wouldn't some use his actions as inspiration?
How is it legal for the Lt. Gov to do that when the Gov is ONLY out of state on business. Why is anyone in the gov't going along with it in the first place. Wow... she needs to be stopped ASAP... Idaho might have a problem.
That depends on the state constitution. In California when ever the governor leaves the state the Lt governor has all the powers of the governor including signing or vetoing laws. Fortunately that rarely happens. That constitutional clause comes from a time when there wasn’t near instantaneous world communications.
The Governor is at the border doing performance politics so, of course, the Lt. Governor thinks I can outdo him. We need serious people who believe in public service but I dare say there's not any in the Republican Party and I'm skeptical about the other party as well. I'm looking at you Sinema.

I live across the border in WA. I am afraid you underestimate the average Idahoan. My money is that she is doing this because she knows it will be well received. Idaho is probably more fringe than reasonable where Republicans are concerned. Just saying.
When I lived in Idaho decades ago, if the governor was out of state the lieutenant governor automatically assumed his powers. It was part of Idaho law and probably still is.
Be honest, the Republican Party and their supporters were already barreling down this track. trump is just a manifestation of what they've been cultivating. Luckily, trump is a f'n idiot. Imagine the damage someone with intelligence and tact could have done to this country. Now is the time for a third party made up of liberal and conservative moderates. This is their chance with both parties infighting and weakened, this may be their only chance. A third party would force negotiations and concessions in Congress. All parties would then need to show how they best serve ALL voters, so they could be re-elected. There would then be blue, red, and a party to represent the majority (non-extremest voters).
My niece lives in Idaho. I was terrified for her and her family when Idaho's hospitals were went into triage mode. Yes, they're all vaccinated but breakthroughs happen --- so do broken legs and heart attacks and car wrecks and bleeding ulcers. And now this. I'm just hoping they find a way to get out while they can.
Brad Little told us that we don't need to have mandates (mask/social dist) because "I know Idahoans will do the right thing." Now we're last in vaccination rates, hospitals swamped and still Idahoans are pretending that they're exempt from caring about their neighbors.

Idaho will elect her governor in a heartbeat. As long as her power grabbing and authoritarianism is perceived as beneficial to them, they don't care. By the time it would negatively impact them it would be too late.
The difference is that she won an election with the Iowa Dems ran a weak candidate in 2018. There’s no governor to return to Iowa and return things to normal. As long as we’re providing nicknames for her, I call her aunt Kim, a la Gilead. Her actions and policies over the past year or so have just been mean.
Her response to the coronavirus in Iowa has been appalling. The reason she won the election is her brutal ad campaigns against Hubbell making him out to be an elitist and corporate crook. Like most dems he didn't fight back and point out her many faults. Democrats definitely aren't without faults but playing fair when it comes to politics doesn't win elections.
I'm in California, It seems that the most radical, Trump loving, conservative's in California are moving to Idaho. I feel sorry for the good, normal people of Idaho. The lieutenant governor is showing her constituants who she is and what she stands for. She is actively campaigning.
The Republicans have been courting the religious right (and their authoritarian "everyone should live by our interpretation of a book by several authors art over centuries" tendencies) since (at least) Reagan. The reversal won't happen overnight.
