It would be great to hear about your pre- and post- run nutrition for your long runs.

so much good info here. i know a lot of this isn't exactly *new* and that decades of research has gone into this subject... but you have a great way of describing things in a way that just makes sense. the focus on injury prevention is so important and imo often undervalued or ignored.

I used to do this thing where I'd stop periodically and do 10 pushup and 10 situps, and then resumed running is much stronger, more so than if I had just stopped for a rest or just walked. The pushups were also more powerful because my heart rate was already up! I have no theory why this worked but I used it a lot to keep going when I thought I was done for the day.

I was doing similar weekly kms as you and you are spot on, glutes got underdeveloped, hamstrings over and my body hardened like a rock. It has taken a year and a half of multiple hour daily yoga to fix my seized up body. Finally released my IT Band for good 3 days ago.

Love these series, thanks for sharing. The scenery around your area is just stunning, those trails and peaks "just" outside your door. I'm in Europe but thinking really hard about spending some time in the future in the BC area to enjoy a bit of biking/running! Q:. Do you actually encounter much wildlife, and eventually run with a "bear bell"? Ran in QC a few years ago in summer and I was told to carry one at the time in some areas. Keep up the great work and all the best with your training!
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 2 года назад
Thanks Cedric! We’re very lucky to have such untamed wilderness so close to our doorstep. I don’t run with a bear bell, but I do carry bear spray when in grizzly country. You can learn more about bear safety here in BC in this video I published last year: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u5NpmGBdNjA.html

@@JeffPelletier Thanks Jeff, very informative video. Bear sightings around here (french Pyrenees) are quite rare, even in summer season when the trails are packed. Sprays happen to be quite useful with the odd crazy dog though...

Used to do all the classic strength workouts ( squat lunges and so on ). Now i only do the one workout which is a kettlebell single arm swing. The key is to go heavy. My whole posterior chain and my core have turned into steel and running related injuries are a thing i can't even remember......And my glutes are constantly firing even when i'm lying down !!!!

Hi Jeff. I would like a mention to the "easiness"of the easy runs. I saw at your Strava some unexpected paces and you seem to confirm that easy should be really easy. But what about the "how easy", what about "how often" and also "how fast" for distance runners. What's your approach? Thanks for the very professional work.

Thanks for the info Jeff! I lived in Vancouver 2015 thru 2018 and seeing it again in your videos make me miss it so much! Seymour valley is always gorgeous. I was wondering, have you read Jason Koop's "Training essentials for ultrarunning"? He seems to make a point that strength training won't make you a better runner as much as just running does. I do like your point about strengthening parts of the bodies that might be weak as a way to prevent injuries though. I've been doing a lot of that after injury and working with a PT. Thanks for sharing your view.

Never thought of counting calories for a long run! I just kind of wing it. I'll start paying attention to it and see if it correlates with how I feel at the end of a long run and use that to guide how much I fuel. Just tricky to estimate calories for non-packaged foods (I like to eat raisins for fuelling, especially in the first half of a long run when my stomach still tolerates them, but obviously no two raisins are created equal in terms of calories). Do you ever do fasted long runs? I know it's a contentious topic 😀
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier Год назад
I don’t do fasted long runs, no. Probably good in moderation, but keep in mind that even the elites do them sparingly.

Hey Jeff! Great new series and nice tips! Question: do you use a HR Monitor (chest strap) to determine your rhythm or do you keep a pace you know you’re comfortable at without a specific focus on heart rate?
@sebastianmoreoferrall9949
@sebastianmoreoferrall9949 2 года назад
Hi Jeff, do you ever run with full race kit on long runs to simulate race conditions? I've got my first 100k race coming up in May and the mandatory kit is over 4kg! Curious to hear if you find use in training like this or not!
@flipco31
@flipco31 2 года назад
Since lots of people are asking about nutrition, I have quite a specific question! Do you continue running when you eat on your long runs, or stop for a minute? I ran my first trail marathon on Saturday, and was surprised that nobody else around me seemed to need to stop and walk, as I've found my stomach can't handle it if I try to eat while bouncing up and down!
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 2 года назад
I typically keep moving when I eat. It’s actually something you need to ‘practice’ and train your stomach for to a degree.

Hi Jeff, another super interesting video! I have a question about mental preparation. I love running without a training schedule. I take more pleasure in running "to the sensations". How do you maintain rigor and motivation throughout your preparation?
@ildikopeter7850
@ildikopeter7850 2 года назад
Will you show your strength training in the videos, or will you stay with just the written notes? I don't quite know what those exercises stand for (not native english), so it'd be helpful and great to see visuals of the strength training. Ps. 350ml of water for 3,5h run! Wow! You must be very dehydrated after your run. It hinders recovery as well, i think!

200 kcal an HR seems really low. I feel much better at nearly double that - usually through adding malto dextrin and Gatorade powder to my bottles. You can easily mix up 300+ kcal per bottle and digest it easily. I no longer feel hungry at the end of long days. Also makes for a good recovery drink with a protein source.
@JeffPelletier

Yea, my target is usually closer to 250/hour.

Hi Jeff, I have following you since I came across of your Annapurna Circuit video. My question is how do you manage your social outings - work and personal both when you have such training plans in place. You must be sleeping early / on time and everything. I am preparing for my first half marathon this year in October and this causes me problems. Probably bad management.
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 2 года назад
Social outings? What are those? 😅Admittedly, my social life mainly revolves around my running circle, and we definitely don’t go out as much as we once did. So I’d say it’s just a matter of prioritizing.

Crazy question. When are you starting to carry bear spray during your runs ? Is it the time of the year? I'm going to squamish for some backcountry spring adventures and running also around 1st of April and I was wondering if that was something I was suppose to think about ! Thanks
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 2 года назад
I never carry bear spray for black bears, only in grizzly country. So that means never on the north shore and sparingly in Squamish. The one area I’m particularly careful in is around Sigurd creek/lake area where there are known grizzly dens.

Hi Jeff, I'd be curious to know how you dress for the weather in North Van for these long runs - I've lived here for just about a year now and still struggle with it! As a side note, was the LSCR snow/ice free? I tried to run it a few weeks ago and it was still quite icy (much like the trail to Norvan Falls), so I've been sticking to out-and-backs on Fisherman's instead. Thanks!
