Let's Talk About That E3 2018 Nintendo Direct... 

I feel like the definition of "port" has kind of gotten lost in recent years. "Porting" a game is just taking a game from its native platform and making it run on another platform with the experience generally unchanged. An enhanced port, like MK8D, is a port but adds some new content like characters or items and maybe fixes or tweaks some elements, but is still largely the same experience. Same graphics, same stages, same racing physics, etc. It added a whole new mode, which is significant, but that mode is built using the same foundation and many of the same key assets as the original game. I don't see how Smash Ult can be categorized as a port in any way. Yes, there is content coming back from past games, but that's true of every Smash game. Smash Ult has new branding, new menus, new mechanics, some new characters, new stages, remastered past stages, new music, new versions of mainstays like Battlefield, new character models and animations, a new rendering engine... Any way you slice it, this game is new in every respect. It just happens to also focus on bringing back a lot of stuff from the past. But the stuff it does bring back has been upgraded. The experience of playing the game is still fundamentally a new experience. It's an amalgamation of past smash games with its own iteration of the core smash gameplay. You could compare it to something like Sonic Mania. Mania draws a lot from the past, but gives it all a new spit and polish as well, as well as new content. It looks a LOT like old games, but it's definitely not a port of any past game.

For me the coverage over Smash was so big I completely forgot about all the little things announced before Smash

Okay let me settle a few things here because I’m sick of people still arguing about this subject. 1.) Smash Ultimate uses the same engine as Smash 4, the credits were for the whole presentation not for Smash alone. 2.) Just because it uses the same engine does not make it a port, that’s like saying Bloodborne is a port of Dark Souls; or that Skyrim is a port of Morrowind just because they use the same engine. 3.) Just because there’s improvement in the visuals is not a confirmation of it being either A.) Run on a different engine, or B.) A sequel. It could be simply due to improvement in the hardware they are running the game on. The Switch is more powerful than the WiiU 4.) This game IS A SEQUEL, if you think otherwise you are wrong, and here is why: •New Characters are here •New Stages are here •Completely revamped battle mechanics/features •Completely revamped UI •New Animations for many of the characters. •New balancing techniques for many characters •New Final Smash system •New Items These not only take what Smash 4 had and improved upon them but also added a ton of new features and content. This game IS a Sequel and if you’re just saying “ER MAH GURD ITS A PORT” simply because you’re salty because the WiiU community was small and you think of yourself in some form of morally superior position then you have to grow up.

Yoshi has been confirmed delayed to TBA 2019 according to the Nintendo website

Basically, 2018 is going to be a lot more mellow than 2017 was. We're getting Smash in December, which is definitely huge, but unless they pull an eleventh-hour reveal on us, that's really the only big thing. And that's fine; 2017 was about starting the Switch with a huge bang to get everyone's attention. Now that they've accomplished that, they're quietly slipping into normal mode with their announcements and releases and letting the Switch's momentum do the rest of the work.

Let's remember that Nintendo Direct > Nintendo's E3

They confirmed that Yoshi on Switch was being delayed for more development time to 2019. So Yoshi is waiting until next year.

Yeah, but Solid Snake

Most people were just expecting too much. Metroid Prime was really early in development last year and they only showed it so Prime-fans wouldn't riot after seeing Samus Returns like with Federation Force. We haven't heard of Pikmin 4 in ages. And Animal Crossing was never going to happen in 2018 anyway. The only thing I was expecting that wasn't there was DLC for Super Mario Odyssey.

I'm just going to say this. This is an off year. Reason? SO MANY releases last year. The rest are so early in development, when they were announced, they couldn't even show a cinematic trailer! And in all things being even, smash bros? It's arguably nintendo's best selling franchise, even beating out 3d mario, etc. And yes, I'm a smash fan, but even then, this e3 was only for this year (minus a few exceptions)

You know what I’m most disappointed in not seeing? Arlo’s face of course!

They don't care about E3, but for me and all the smash bros fans, they eviscerated everyone else. (Rip all the weird people who don't eat smash bros, sleep smash bros, live smash bros). But I have to admit I wanted animal crossing too.

It's confirmed a new game. They don't consider new smash games sequels. This was built from the ground up and guess what. Every previous game reused assets. Technically they just reuse assets whereas this one as they've actually updated textures. And they're holding back on showing new stuff. They're saving that to build up hype.

People saying smash is a port or 'remaster' are absolutely ridiculous. You're only saying that because we get spoiled by smash games, and because this one doesn't have a complete graphical overhaul and 15+ it doesn't qualify as a new game? smh just enjoy it

(Little Animal Crossing "why is it not here yet, I wish we had something!" rant, don't mind me.) The salt in the wound for me is that they keep using Animal Crossing-related assets everywhere (Mario Kart and Smash models, music in presentations and other videos), but have not even said the words "Animal Crossing for the Switch is in development", at any point, and it has been six years since New Leaf came out in Japan, so it HAS to be around the corner... But I've been thinking that for over a year and a half, at this point. So far, before we even have a whisper on AC Switch, these things have happened: - Metroid Prime 4 has been announced; - The Elder Scrolls 6 has been announced; - One main Fallout game has been released, another one (spin-off?) has been announced; - Ridley has been added to Smash; - One Smash Bros game was released (two if you count the 3DS version), and another one is on the horizon; - Mario Party actually went back to its roots, which a lot of people thought would never happen; - Pokemon X&Y, ORAS, SuMo and USUM have been released, the Let's Go spin-offs are coming soon and new main games are in development for reveal next year; - Two main series Fire Emblem games have been released, and a new one is revealed and confirmed for next year; - And a lot more I could go on about, but everyone gets the point by now. Basically, I'm not even mad, I'm just... surprised. I'm also happy I never made any bets on when a new AC would be announced, because I would have consistently lost everything. Also, it's very easy to say "but look, they made Amiibo Festival!", which was made by the Mario Party 9 and 10 devs, so that's irrelevant. You can also claim that Pocket Camp is a thing, but it's also as much of a proper Animal Crossing game as Paper Mario Sticker Star is a proper Paper Mario game (which is to say, not at all - also, if the team making Mario Odyssey started focusing entirely on Super Mario Run and kept delaying Odyssey, that wouldn't have made any sense, would it?) - so that's one more irrelevant thing out of the way. The most relevant part is that the dev team for Animal Crossing, from what we've heard, is shared between AC and Splatoon - but... why? Why not hire more people to handle both series, considering they're completely different games for completely different demographics? It just isn't logical to me. And I'm saying this as someone who has 400 hours in Splatoon 2, mind you. I just think they could have logically divided teams better to have more work on AC Switch sooner, considering it's still one of their biggest series, despite not being on Mario or Zelda level. It's big enough to have gotten 400 collectible cards and a metric-ton of merch, right? So it's just... odd, to me. We'll see AC Switch sooner or later, I'm just genuinely, honestly surprised we haven't seen a speck of it yet.

How can people call smash ultimate a port but not call every new COD game a port?

My only wish for this Smash was to have every character in it. And no, it's not a port. Updated graphics and redesign for almost everyone, new mechanics, items, stages, etc. It's a new game and only a non smash player would say it's THE SAME GAME. Like they'd say melee and brawl are the same.

I don't see how having all the characters makes it kinda a port? It's a brand new game, with it's own subtitle, not "For Switch"

I really liked Mario Party and Smash, but there wasn't much for me beyond that. I'm looking at indies this year, Pode looks really good and is coming out this month.

This conference was okay but man it sucks for a guy who loves single player games. Every game coming out this holiday is just multiplayer titles. Smash is the only game im excited for but everything else im not interested we could have at least got a metroid prime trilogy HD for September :(

I think they just pushed back FE not to detract from smash, or just to have something for spring next year. There are a LOT of games coming Sep-Dec

I don't understand why everyone is up in arms about Nintendo's E3 this year. We are getting Mario Party and Smash, Fire Emblem is being worked on along with Metroid and Pokemon. Animal Crossing will come in due time. And of course, OCTO EXPANSION COMES OUT TODAY AND SPLATOON 2 IS GETTING FREE UPDATES UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR! Just because it wasn't shown off doesn't mean it's not coming. Nintendo has directs throughout the year to show off their games even if it wasn't at E3. We will get everything within a couple years, people just need to chill out and give Nintendo the time they need to make the games we want.

How is Smash Ultimate a port? The fighting style, characters, and stages are all changed or added. I’m not sure what “sequel” would be if this isn’t it.

Like how is that a port? -Whole new engine and- _(did some more research that part was misinformation we don't know if the new game runs on a new engine)_ most models and textures look new or changed. The artstyle is also VERY different and there are lots of new mechanics and a completely new UI.

I would have expected Shovel Knight to be in Smash before Ridley. Not disappointed at all, but I do hope that Shovel Knight can make an appearance too considering he already has an amiibo.

I'm excited for smash but the lack of a "one more thing" was so disappointing. Fire emblem looks amazing but I expected more, considering they kept us in the dark for SO long. it was an ok direct but all the smash was like watching/reading patch notes. "Look! The wii fit developers weren't satisfied with our face model! Are ya happy now?"

I'm impressed nothing was leaked for smash.

My gut is telling me that there’ll be another Nintendo direct soonish where they’ll reveal a lot more on a stage that’s not shared by others.

For some reason Street Figher Alpha is considered a series of games that just happen to have the same characters and sprites with updated stages, music, roster, etc. and revamped mechanics, but this game is considered just a port. If you call Dark Souls Remastered "just a port", you're justified in saying so. If you call Smash Ultimate "just a port", you have no idea what a port is.

Well it turns out nobody likes this E3 as well. Because it's so hard to actually enjoy something. This E3 was pretty good. Everyone wanted Smash, everyone got Smash, and luckily it's not a port. I don't know why people thought it would be a port, but it's probably just people not being able to enjoy stuff anymore. We still have another character that hasn't been revealed, so who knows, maybe we can still get a baby Waluigi.

I think they'll use Smash Ultimate as a platform for tons of DLC in the future since they can then use that as a sort of advertisement for future games. If they want to advertise ARMS2, they'll add Springman If they want to advertise a Xenoblade X port, they'll add Elma from that If they want to advertise a new Donkey Kong Country game, they'll add K.rool

It is a Sequel, using a different graphic engine & different mechanics and physics. I hope they listen to the pros and adjust/change some things. As a smash fan I was pleased that almost everything was smash

Given all the changes to the system and the veterans (and possibly axing custom specials), I think it's safe to assume that yes, Ultimate IS a sequel.

In all seriousness the game count was low, but there was still a lot. If nothing appealed to you I can understand disappointment, but that really isn't anyone's fault. Mario Tennis, Smash, Mario Party and TWEWY are gonna be 4 massive games. Octopath traveler and the new xenoblade dlc is actually a standalone game that Xenoblade 2 holders are getting at a discount basically. So if you don't like smash, Mario sports games, Party games, rpg's or mario rabbids, than ya I can see how you could be disappointed. But that is hardly because of a lack of upcoming titles.

Oh well, I know it isn't a game with a lot of popularity, but man, I was waiting for Mario Strikers.

Daemon X Machina is the best thing I have seen at this E3. The dev team is STACKED! This has to yield an amazing game.

Thank you Arlo, I think that honest opinions are what Nintendo needs the most right now. I wish they will invest in new studios or more second parties in the future. So that they can have a costant stream of good releases with no major droughts. A lot of fans fail to understand that showing concerns and disappointment is good and healty for the company, especially if they will learn on their mistake, for a better future. The Switch didn't sell as much as expected in the first half of 2018, so yeah dear fanboys, you can shout that everythings is fine and dandy as much as you want but that doesn't change the truth in the end. No hype and excitement around a system mean no sales and no recognition from the community means no free ads.

This E3 Presentation just needed ONE more thing to drive it home. Smash was everything I dreamed of, but come on Nintendo. It just felt incomplete.

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they pour a ton of info about Yoshi on us at the next direct, and then release Yoshi a month or two later. It would be weird if Yoshi wasn’t done this year. I saw the whole Treehouse Live Yoshi presentation and Nintendo clearly has a lot done on it. Or maybe they aren’t releasing it this year so Smash won’t destroy Yoshi’s hype and sales. I don’t know but whatever is happening, Yoshi looks absolutely gorgeous, the game is beautiful, I love the craft aesthetic.

Man if you're not a Switch owner who missed out on the Wii U, you are missing out. Everything is new to me. Can you imagine how awesome it is to see these releases like I do?

Smash is not a port. It has new content and mechanics, they are just holding most of the (few) new characters close to the chest. The reveals always keep the hype up until the game launches.

Thank you! One of Fire Emblem's main recurring motifs is its iconongraphy, which this game completely breaks with. It's early days and they can improve it, but right now it looks more like a Dynasty Warriors or even Total War game.

Actually, Mario Tennis Aces was supposed to come out in Spring, but it will came out in June.

Fire Emblem was initially stated as 2018, Yoshi officially has been delayed to 2019 but I’m not sure if they ever officially said 2018 for that.

I'm sort of disappointed that they didn't announce any other titles like Pikmin 4, new 3DS Zelda etc. Actually, they didn't bring up the 3DS at all this E3, which is kind of strange when you think about it because there are still first party games coming to 3DS...

The great thing about Nintendo is they do multiple Directs a year, so there's a chance we'll get sneak peeks of some of the big hitters of next year by the end of this year.

My problem with this E3 was that Harley ANYTHING was new, we knew about MOST, if not ALL of the games beforehand! Having said that, I'm 22 and still screamed in joy twice at smash bros

Smash ultimate is neither a port nor a sequel, but a compilation more than anything. A compilation of literally everything they've ever done (hopefully including a unique story and target practice etc). They didn't show many first party games sure, but they showed more than enough to keep me sorted for the next coming months of the year.

2018: Octopath Traveler Super Mario Party Pokemon Let's Go Super Smash Bros Ultimate Yoshi(?) 2019: Metroid Prime 4 Pokemon Core Game Fire Emblem Yoshi (?) I don't know. It seems to me that second half of 2018 has a solid enough lineup with or without Yoshi. Nintendo likes doing bite sized directs for us which is both good and bad. It makes E3 shorter but gives us new information throughout the year rather than E3 and TGS only.

We get 3-4 of these directs every year, so unlike last years E3 where they were looking 2-3 years ahead with Metroid, Pokemon RPG and apparently Yoshi lol. This year though Nintendo focused on things that are coming out in the next 6 months, they said that a couple of times within the show. I understand why a lot of the fan base is a little disappointed but we're probably getting another one of these in October/November. It was clear that this one was focused on the Smash community and in the past they have generally focused a Direct on 1 or 2 specific games. While I would've loved to see Metroid footage; a Pikmin or Animal Crossing reveal on top of what we got with Fire Emblem, Mario Party or Smash, It's not out of the realm of possibility that we'll see these things being announced in the next 4-8 months. I think if this wasn't an E3 direct then maybe people would be reacting differently, this is just all my opinions though
