Nintendo Direct 1/11/18 Discussion, Apparently! 

The hairstyles in Mario Tennis were enough to satisfy me when watching the direct.

Let’s remember that it was a MINI direct. If one big surprise came from it it wouldn’t be called a mini. I’m actually happy to see Nintendo calling the direct a Mini. That means even they recognize it’s nothing big. Back in WiiU days something like this could well have been an actual direct. They aren’t throwing fillers at us; they are getting the less impressive stuff out of the way. And yet people are reacting Ok to the direct because the announcements, while nothing major, were still cool and exciting. Me personally am super excited about TWEWY.

Arlo, this is a Mini Direct. This is the small stuff, or mini stuff, for the Switch. The big stuff will come in the next Direct a big/full Direct. Also if they're supporting the 3DS this year that'll probably be in there too, since the Mini didn't have anything. Mini is not the time for any heavy hitters. I knew to not expect much when I saw Mini in the title; that's why I'm not upset, and why people who know that aren't either. If it was a full Direct and this is all we got, then get upset. SInce it's Mini, it's fine. I'm still hyped for a big Direct, but can only guess when.

This is a MINI direct, I feel that all these games they announced where small, or port announcements. I feel that there will be a normal Direct to focus on bigger announcements. I'm not holding my breath or anything, but I feel that the normal Direct is one they actually talk about the bigger games and different features on the system. So if that happens it will be first couple days in February. (and Pokémon usually announce or tease something about the new game in like February)

OI! ARLO! Almost everytime Nintendo has done a mini direct, a full one came out within two weeks, keep your eyes peeled!

I'm hoping that since this was a mini, they have an actual bigger direct planned in a few weeks or so and they just put this on to get all the ports and small stuff out of the way before their big show

I don't understand why people got so overhyped about this. I got exactly what I was expecting. Maybe I just don't listen to the people hype it up. Anyways, I was happy with Dark Souls and DK being announced.

Traditionally, Nintendo has aired a second, full direct shortly after releasing a mini-direct. So although the mini-direct did present several games I'll be preordering soon. I'm eager for a full, meat-n-potatoes direct to come fairly soon.

I thought the Direct Mini was solid. Decent ports coming over (I'm particularly excited for Tropical Freeze as I never played it on the Wii U), a Mario Tennis game that looks like actual effort is being put into it, decent RPG's for those who care about them, Kirby Star Allies got a release date, some good DLC, especially for Mario + Rabbids, and the Odyssey update looks like a lot of fun. Also, Dark Souls on the Switch. That's pretty neat. If this is the only direct we're getting until Spring, i'm ok with it. There where few games announced that will keep people going until summer, and then I think we'll get a big autumn/holiday announcement. This lineup won't be better than 2017, but I'm confident that it'll be solid.

100% of the time so far, a mini direct is ALWAYS followed by an ACTUAL direct within 20 days. Tis not over guys

Did anyone notice it was raining in New Donk City during the trailer? I wonder if changing weather effects are gonna be in the update too! That would be super awesome!

People aren't disappointed bc it was a mini so we knew not to expect much, bc if we saw these on a normal direct it probably wouldn't be that exciting. A mini direct was the best way of showing these games

The Funky Kong as easy mode is the most genius easy mode in a Nintendo game ever. Because think about it. Is it any surprise Funky Kong has no trouble whatsoever? That he's 100% cooler than those scrub kongs? Honestly, I wouldn't even feel bad about using him. I'd just feel...Funky.

If you look at the mini directs in the past, all of them had a follow up normal direct within 20 days. I think this was just to get the smaller announcements out of the way

LOL people got over hyped for a direct that Nintendo said nothing about. Then get mad when they don't deliver 6 AAA titles that'll play @ 240fps in 8k in handheld mode. Anyone else see the vids that shovel out a metric ton of bat-poop crazy predictions? I think this direct-MINI was to get crap out of the way for a bigger direct in a couple of weeks and E3 when the rest of the world expects it. Thank you Nintendo! Keep doing what you're doing!

As for the spoilers, just go on the Nintendo RU-vid channel. Quickest and best way to find the direct.

Also, I really liked that this was a 'mini' direct. I think this means Nintendo will give us more directs like this, smaller than usual, but more frequent than usual. It's important for Nintendo to keep the Switch hype alive after 2017.

One great thing about this Direct is that it was a Mini. Usually a few days after a Mini Direct, a much larger Direct is shown off.

I think the reason people aren't too upset is because this was a MINI direct. As soon as people saw that it was a smaller than average direct made people lower their expectations and not expect huge announcements. That's how I felt anyway.

I think you were a little harsh at the end about it needing one big thing. It’s a mini direct. Wasn’t a full blown one. They do 3-4 full blown directs a year which means we should be getting one by March. Giving a few months for the e3 followed by the last one in November

Hey guys, I think I've discovered the meaning of Butternut squash. Level with me for a sec. So, I was playing the original super mario world arcade game for the first time a few weeks ago. And I was making my way through a run, one life left and no powerups, when lo and behold I stumble upon a powerup shroom, and in the heat of the moment I declared "Butternut squash? Yes please!" It felt so appropriate, and I wasn't sure why. But here's what I think. Butternut squash is something in essence that you know you want and kinda need and are also expecting, but you've forgotten about during the tedium of everyday life (or dodging koopa-troopas). So, a new Arlo video comes out: Butternut squash. A new game in a series you love is announced: Butternut squash. Your mom makes you your favorite dinner: Butternut squash, well, you get the point. Therefore, to promote the longevity of the meme, please use butternut squash to describe anything you really love, but forgot you were waiting for.

I still think "the world ends wii u" was a missed opportunity by Atari. That would have 100% made the Wii u the top console of the last generation. C'mon Sonny step it up, you're the reason the Wii u failed.

To be fair, Nintendo must have so much stuff in the works, Pikmin, Metroid, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, all these things being worked on by studios that aren't affected by the creation of ports, as they're often outsourced, there's a lot coming for the Switch, and if Nintendo didn't have a lot for us then they wouldn't announce Dark Souls in a Mini Direct!

yknow what i disagree with you. i left the mini direct feeling better of our chances of getting bigger announcements. i feel like if they saw the need or reason to have a mini direct, then that means they’ll have more room for bigger announcements in a full direct. and even if that isnt the case, 2017 was a big year for them on big titles. im sure they’re aware of the hype and expectation put on them, and with how ambitious nintendo is, i dont think they’ll let us down this year.

No Smash announcement but I 100% guarantee there will be a lot of Switch smashing when Dark Souls comes out.

Me finding out about the direct was weird...I was playing Splatoon 2 and everyone in the square was begging for the direct to come soon...I got booted from my online match due to poor connection (darn winter storm) so I quit out and went to RU-vid and it was the first video in my feed...so I thought to myself, "Squiddies ask and Squiddies receive!"

I'm pretty excited about Mario Tennis. The story mode isn't quite what I want (the RPG stuff from the GBC game), but having it is instantly superior to many previous Mario Tennis games, especially the Wii U one which had... nothing. The mini direct was fun. The leadup to it was entertaining. When it came out the "mini" did serve to temper expectations, so after I saw it was mini my expectations did end up being surpassed. I hope they do more of these, alongside full-size directs.

As someone who didn't play Tropical Freeze on the WiiU, I'm really happy to get a chance to play Tropical Freeze with one of my favorite Kongs on Switch

Honestly I'm impressed enough. After last year, I decided the Switch was worth saving up for at some point. Funnily enough one of the things I noticed and moaned about was the lack of Hyrule warriors. I thought, okay I missed out on that on the Wii U, and it's still pricey, and I wish I could get that if I got a Switch. Wouldn't it be nice? Literally like the next day, I saw someone (funnily enough on a PS site) commenting about how it was happening. I lost my mind, checked the news, and ALSO found DKC on board. Then I was pulled into Bestbuy the other day, stopping by just for someone else's checklist really, and wound up bumping into them restocking both a Switch and even an SNES classic. Fuck it, I took the deep plunge, and I'm ready. This direct, even if just full of ports, definitly influenced me that this was just the way to go forward. Everything good is ported over, and so much good is coming out, and it was just right there. Tempting me. I couldn't fight it anymore, good job Nintendo.

I kinda feel like having the entire direct spoiled was your own fault. Went to Reddit, saw a pinned post about it, nothing else, and clicked, and saw the video before anything else. I understand catching something else with your eyes depending on time of day and which site you go to...but soon as you see that there's a direct just click on the link or go to youtube. Don't keep looking around the internet. It doesn't matter if it's a surprise or not, if you keep looking around the internet before you look at the video then it's your own fault for getting all the spoilers.

You were supposed to watch it on Nintendo's youtube channel, not Nintendo Life's.

I think Arlo is a bit too sensitive about "spoilers". I get it, spoilers suck, but nobody is more butt hurt over them than him. With that said, I found the direct via a video link on Facebook, so everything was a surprise to me. I'd say DON'T go to Nintendo's website if you're concerned about stuff like this.

As soon as a Pokémon mystery dungeon game is announced, I'll be satisfied! :)

I think the fact that they didn't show anything new means that they're saving the good stuff for 1 big reveal

I'm glad you echoed my concerns as well. For a first of the year 2018 it was underwhelming, lots of people voiced that concern in the subreddit so I'm surprised you didn't notice them. I hope Nintendo hears that concern!

I care about spoilers Arlo, I feel your pain. Seeing something in the proper video reveal or in the game itself is a lot more satisfying. I miss the days of my childhood when I wasn't allowed to use the internet, (my parents were pretty strict) and I could literally walk into a game shop having no idea what I would find, see a game I've never heard of before, and have my mind blown by a fully new experience when I get back home to play it.

It was a direct mini. So it is likely that the actual direct will be early next month

A story mode makes almost any game better. Heck I'd even welcome a story mode in Mario Kart The only thing spoiled for me was Dark Souls. I saw a tweet that said "Dark Souls confirmed in Nintendo Direct Mini" and I went straight to the nintendo website. Also to the entire latter third of the video: jeez, calm down, it's "mini" direct! This obviously isn't the "big" January Direct. There's gonna be another one soon.

I believe people weren't very upset because of the "mini" thing. This is Nintendo saying that this is a small event, with some games releasing in early 2018. Like, "don't worry guys we know those are smaller announcements that maybe coud go overlooked otherwise so here they are! This means that MAYBE we can get another major event later in the year with some neat surprises like Animal Crossing or Pikmin for Fall/Holiday seasons!

If it's a mini Direct, expect mini things. ;3

I wasn't expecting anything so I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. I was a big fan of TWEWY when it came on the DS so I can't wait to play it again on Switch, and with new content. I never got to play Hyrule Warriors so I'm looking forward to that port.

Dark souls is cheap now because it's almost a decade old. The remaster means a lot for the franchise because it was VERY clunky early on. $40 or $50 is nice but I'd easily pay $60 for this again. As far as content goes, I'm not sure you know how much content this game actually has. It's a lot.

When I first saw Luigi with balloons strapped to his back, I thought the Super Mario Odyssey DLC would be something more like this: You can control Luigi, who has balloons and the Poltergust 3000. You can use the camera (the right control stick) to point the Poltergust 3000 at, say, the floor and push yourself into the air to start floating. I think the DLC they do have is pretty good, but does anyone have any thoughts on what I said about the Poltergust? I feel like that could go somewhere, but I don't know how. Maybe there could be time trials with the Poltergust, or something.

Part of the fun of a direct is the live stream reactions, really helps bring the community together. Was very sad they didn't do that this time. "Mini" or not, people would have been excited.

The keyword "mini" was what kept my expectations in check after it dropped. I'm excited for Tropical Freeze and The World Ends With You since they're both games I missed out on originally, despite owning the consoles they were on at the time of their release. I don't really care about Hyrule Warriors. I'm happy about Dark Souls, but I'll be getting the PS4 version.

I'm just happy Kirby's gonna be here soon.

Mario Tennis having a story and Nintendo listening to the fans gives me hope about a decent, story-heavy, HD Paper Mario game.

I think there's more. Nintendo has consistently shown Mini Directs to be followed later on by later, major Directs, so the bigger information has yet to come.

Sorry bud but Dark Souls IS a big announcement. They can throw all the 1st party announcements at us but a HUGE 3rd party announcement IS a big thing.

I 100% agree with Arlo about the surprise nature of the mini direct. I love being surprised by the announcements live, and dropping the direct at 6:00am PST without any notice ruins that.

I was kinda bummed that they didn’t touch on Fire Emblem. It’s been a year and still no info or even a title.

I don't use social media so I wasn't spoiled. With that said dark souls 1 is one of my top 3 favorite games of all time. You could imagine my surprise when they teased it, I don't don't think I've ever gasped at a trailer before, but when I saw the bonfire light up I was just so shocked, so happy. I'm not too upset about spending $60 on it, even though I've already bought it twice, but I can see why that would turn people off. I don't really know what they could use for new content, but maybe some new weapons. I can't really see them making new bosses or areas. Anyway, 2018 is going to be a great year with shadow of the colosus, another one of my top 3 favorite games of all time getting remastered. If they remaster mgs3 snake eater too (even though I probably wouldn't buy it because konami) then this year will be insane for me.

got confused by the title because in the UK and I think Europe we switch the day and month when writing dates, which would mean that the direct was on November 1st... which coincidentally is when the smash direct is.

The WiiLikeToPlay footage you used made me feel sad because I miss their old videos when all four of the original members were there.

There's gonna be another direct within 30 days I'm calling it. Hopefully they announce more games though, and maybe a trailer to the pokemon game, or a title or something.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact that "The World Ends With You" can be played with touch screen if you undock it, so that may make it more possible for Mario Maker to be on the Switch.
