Discovering minimalism was the best thing that happened to me in 2020! It’s ongoing and I struggle at times but conscious consumerism allowed me to feel the feeling that shopping was giving me.

When you stop mindlessly shopping and only buy what is nessasery you can take the time to research about the company and find companies that show compassion to workers and product fair wage high quality. I'm so blessed to have found a new way ❤️

Brilliantly put. Mindless consumption might save the economy but will damage human psyche. Right now the idea of consumerism is geared towards making only a few handful of companies rich who want to dominate the entire economy. Consumption is not the problem. The problem is lack of awareness while consuming.

I tried budgeting for years but it never stuck until I reset my mindset about buying things. I started asked myself very similar questions to the ones you pose before buying anything and it's changed how I spend and how I related to things for the better.

Yes yes yes to everything you just said. I been listening to your podcast for over a year and it's taking me some time to make better choices about my consumerism. Over this past year I've really tried hard to shop local and support my community. I think before I buy. I really believe that the plastic shopping bag ban in New York state is a good thing not just for the environment but for my pocketbook I can only buy what fits in my small bag. I've learned to really think about what I buy and if it will be useful and bring me joy sometimes I don't buy something for at least a month or so to make sure that it something good to purchase. I look forward to your talks and I'm glad I wasn't unsubscribed from your podcast lol

Very interesting point of view. As I try my best to support local from farm stands to shops it gets harder and harder to do every day. Not by my intentions but by other people’s. People giving up quality for Convenience. Driving small business out. Subdivisions being built on farm lands making local food harder to come by and water Resources more scarce. People all focused on their phones and not what’s in front of them. People longing to connect but overlooking real connections. Failing to see how we are already connected.

Thank you for this piece. While the pandemic has seen the senseless loss of millions of lives globally, one of the things that personally has given me hope is the resurgence of Mutual Aid collectives and the Buy Nothing/Trade and Swap communities. It is people meeting other individual people’s needs without and arbiter in the middle and people freely give and receive. I don’t want our economy to “return to normal”- I want it to elevate to be better. 🙏🏽

Amazing, thank you for all your inspiring content! -Personally, I started focusing on secondhand and preloved shopping. This way I save money, support locally and don't support the overproduction of.. stuff.. However, I could never stop shopping, I just do it more intentionally now.

Your channel has spoiled me. When I watch many other channels it is filled with ads. I just watched part of a video before this, an ad plays before it starts, 2nd video at 1:23, 3rd video at 5:43.... I stopped at that point. It was a video under 9 minutes. Wanted that thank you and vent at the same time :)

Nice talk! Only by the fact that we do better choices we are already stimulating the economy to build better products

I refer to your talks in my philosophy class, where I focus on the relationship between freedom and responsibility, with an emphasis on community. I also have written about you in connection to Epicurean philosophy. Just curious if you've ever read any Epicurus? You very much embody the philosophy and I would be interested to develop something about your thoughts on other things they discuss in comparison to them.

Some people think capitalism is the enemy of minimalism and they are absolutely wrong. Voluntary exchange of goods and services has improved our life's beyond what anyone can fathom. Also profit is completely moral and necessary, when a business profits it means it is efficient in allocating it's energy and resources and that benefits everyone involved. Consumerism on the other hand is the opposite of profit, you are allocating resources and energy in a wasteful or useless way. I believe minimalism is pro economy and pro efficient allocation of energy and resources.

Well articulated. The economy will continually change as people's demands change ang vary. Capitalism rewards those able to provide anything of value to consumers. It's extremely efficient and fair. The best part is we as individuals, can chose exactly where we spend our money to ensure it meets whatever criteria we have.

' 'profit is completely moral and necessary' ' Concentration camps were a lucrative buisness, so are the sweatshop, wars, etc. Profits exist for the sake of profit and nothing more. Consumerism isn't the root cause, but rather a symptom. Capitalism is the problem! With money, you have poverty. Power corrupts, and money is power. It's a self-serving system that can only benefit itself, at the expense of everyone else. If anything, minimalism SHOULD be an enemy to capitalism, because minimalism makes sense, capitalism does not. ' 'when a business profits it means it is efficient in allocating it's energy and resources and that benefits everyone involved.' ' Maybe you should tell that to the millions who are starving when big buisness are making records profits, or are dumping toxic materials into rivers because it's too costly to clean it up themself (which result in serious health hazard).

I bought too many books during this quarantine coz i read a lot during this time. But I spend too much money. I need to save. It's hard coz there's no near library around here. I also read e-book. It's fine but it's not as good as reading physical books. What should I do? I'm broke coz I bought too many books and Ive been unemployed and my saving's going down slowly since I bought too many book. 🤧 it's a dilemma for me

Look for a local used book store to trade. I hear ya thrifbooks.com sees me coming. They are a good online second hand book store. I order from them and take my old books to a local book store for trade.

I agree with trying to sell them on the internet, locally at a book store or I've used Facebook marketplace to sell items I let go of. Alternatively, if you have book loving friends maybe you can trade/exchange books with them? Then you can read more books without more expense and clutter.
