Yeah its a LOOK at the photos on your laptop type deal take the photos get back to life screen free out and about then look at the photos when your home and in for the nigh. i like it that way deal with the photos in an intentional way at home
any smartphone with this matte black and white display can immediately help people move away from media addiction. It’s the multimedia apps like RU-vid,instagram and TikTok that are the real time eaters. I think a phone is still an essential part for many peoples daily lives but these social media apps are what is taking up unnecessary attention and keeping us hooked due to the rich and immersive content.
The full price ($799) is going to destroy the company. I have LP2 and, and would get LP3. But I know that, if they don't reduce the retail cost, then my LP3 would stop getting updates after a year. Because they will literally go out of business because of it.
I know, right? It's not like everyone has that amount of money to spend on a phone 📱 or is really willing to. I get what they're 'cooking' there, and it's phenomenal, but I never spent $800 on an iPhone. Why would I spend it on a 'less distracting,' but also less functional, device? My current phone is about $170, and I think I will have to find a way to dumb it down myself. Eight hundred dollars, dude! I mean, that price is crazy!
I preordered and I honestly think it’s the best thing to do if you want an upgrade from the LPii or have been holding out for a phone like this! It will be the cheapest way to get it and honestly the smartest if you can spare the cash, just hope we can enable color for maps/music and i will be set for 4-6 years. Edit: its essentially an apple iPod classic with cell/text functionality and a camera especially compared to pre iPhone apple.
Not too terrible. Tho it is overpriced for real; I still support them indirectly thru the phone plan. Perhaps when the Light Phone IV inevitably rolls out in six or so years I'll hop back on the minimalist train.
Here's my view on the cost: yes it's steep, but it's a small company and the build quality seems high- they intend for this phone to last you a long time. They scoff at "planned obsolescence," and consider that your average smart phone gets replaced more often and is more expensive. (I dont know the numbers, i tend to keep my phones for a long time- but i think the norm might be like 3 years or so) This phone will be supported for many years and the lifestyle this phone forces may also save you money. Lower potential plan costs, not spending money because you saw a targeted ad, etc.
Literally just found your channel 15 mins ago looking for dumb phone possibilities. Saw the lightphone II review and was in the middle of the Wisephone video when I saw this one! I am so excited for these kinds of devices, especially with the push by tech companies who make money selling your data forcing everyone to sign binding arbitration agreements with no easily accessible opt-outs!
ive always wanted to get a dumb phone but i rely on google maps and music streaming. also no one texts in 2024 so i also need to be able to run facebook messenger/whatsapp etc but no one supports that
I think its super important not to be able to view the photos we take on the phone itself. When I had deleted social media, viewing my photos is my new addiction lol
I notice a lot of their bigger fans are clamoring for you to not be able to view the photos, but to me that's kind of a purist pov that i dont really think makes sense unless you specifically for some reason treat your personal photos like social media.
It would help if wasn’t so expensive. I’m from Brazil and 800 dollars here it’s like 5 x our monthly minimum wage and most ppl don’t even gain 800 dollars in two months. So only a person who already can afford not spending time with anything can afford this phone. Besides that, it looks an amazing ideia, well though and I hope well executed.
I do not own an LP2 but am aware of curtailing my time on smartphones. I have preordered the LP3 as the camera is a great addition. A lot of people are complaining on the full price and yes it is steep but if you value your own time then I think it is a small price to pay. I also think they are counting on releasing additional features with the inclusion of NFC etc. and hence the higher price point. Also the inclusion of camera is going to make video calling possible in the future.
I have a LP2 and gave up on it because the menus were simply abysmal and it was too painful to navigate contacts just to use the thing to make voice calls. A dumb phone should be really good at the basics of making a phone call and checking voicemail. Based on my experience with the LP2, i'd be really hesitant about the LP3, particularly at full price, without seeing videos of menu navigation. The only reason I'm even considering it is for use as an "emergency phone" for a 12 yr old. I think this is probably the best use for one of these light phones.

The lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack is a deal-breaker for me. Also, I prefer the e-ink display and smaller size. When my LP2 dies I'll probably just buy another LP2, despite the unfortunate delicate plastic construction, tinny speakers, and no camera.
Is consumerism paying a high price for something that you don't see the value in? It seems that is what you suggest. but It's an interesting question - is it more consumerist to pay a high price tag for a simple product that is engineered to last for the next 5 to 10 years+, or is it more consumerist to buy 4 budget smartphones over the same time period? Also, this phone will not profit from your data, meaning there is higher upfront cost compared to an apple or google phone that farms it's users like a reaource.
I would argue that both are equally problematic…. I like gadgets as much as the next person, but the whole idea of upgrade of phones and whole channels discussing so called products and functions that we do not really need is for me problematic. People buy what they want to course, as do I, but it might be good to reflect on the idiocy from time to time 😊
Im a photographer too. I'm very interested about the camera aspect like you mentioned, will they go the camp snap route where you view the photos on the cloud or something? Or will it show on the phone in B&W and you can see it in color when it transfers over 🤔

I love the concept and pre-ordered one. There are some apps that aren’t “attention hoarders”… for example, sometimes you need to do something on your bank app… do you foresee having a limited number of other apps (such as maps) that are useful as tools too but don’t rob your attention?
Definitely keep up with the company. They are always talking about adding other apps as tools. There are some other dumb phone companies considering these “tool drawers” as well!
I think i works still have to have my Pixel for Maps, the camera, and RU-vid Music. But 99% of the time, I think most of us are just scrolling and going nowhere fast. I bought the Freedom app and it's synced on my phone and computer which is incredible but if i ever uninstall it or turn something off, bad habits start creeping in fast. Lightphone still doesn't feel like a full replacement for my lifestyle so it would end up becoming a secondary device I carry 50% or more of the time. Maybe the purchase is justified if it'll make me less distracted.
Very much looking forward to the LPIII... I have the LPII and like it well enough, but am totally stoked for the new features that solve a lot of the problems with the first two iterations. Preordered without hesitation.
People are still confused what a light is and suppose to do for you lol but that blank space app turning your phone is a nice taste to what it feels to not be distracted but still have the tools 🔧 in your hands.
I have the Light Phone II my main issues were the voicemails. People would tell me they left a voicemail and I didn't even realize you couldn't get voicemails on it. You had to do the old-school way of dialing (*62?) I think it was to listen to your voicemail. But I was so used to visual voicemails that I kept forgetting to check the * way. Also when I got the Light Phone II I let people know to NOT send me photos because I couldn't view them, and I swear they started sending me photos more than they ever had before. Then they would get pissed at me for not viewing them/ responding to them. I constantly reminded them every day to just email me what they wanted to send and I would look at it when I got home and they just weren't listening to me. My main reason for switching back to a smartphone was for the camera. I have several hand-related issues/ disabilities and I loved the size of the Light Phone II it was absolutely perfect for me. Not too heavy so I could carry it everywhere, but substantial enough that I wouldn't lose it. But I missed taking photos. My smaller point-and-shoot has been struggling to work for years (it got soaked in my bag when my water bottle broke) I managed to save it but sometimes it just won't turn on or it overheats very quickly. And I didn't want to start carrying my heavier/ bulky DSLR. So I opted to just go back to using a smartphone reluctantly. On top of that, A LOT of stores around me have started to require you to sign up for their apps in order to get discounts which is so incredibly annoying. So the main thing was the camera, voicemail, and apps for me. Texting was a slight issue too though because as you can see I write a lot. But I couldn't go back to edit any of it. You had to scroll back through letter by letter. It definitely made me want to not text as much. And I started to call people more even though phone calls make me anxious. Another thing was because of the size of the phone no one could hear me. It was so small I kept having to move the phone between my ear on the speaker and my mouth speaking, or else people couldn't hear me. I frequently was told that I sounded far away/ they couldn't hear me if I kept my ear on the speaker to talk. I'm so excited to get the Light Phone III to try it out. Especially since it now has a camera!! TL/DR: I have the Light Phone II and want to upgrade to the Light Phone III. Mostly for the camera. The screen is a little bigger which is good for my visual impairment but not as good for my hand/ wrist disabilities. But it's still smaller than a regular smartphone which I can't stand because they keep making them bigger and bigger.
One thing I was curious about that I couldn’t info was this: if I have an iPhone with an ESIM and don’t want a new number, will the light phone be compatible for seamless transitions? My carrier is compatible with light phone but I wasn’t sure about eSIM.
I own the LP2. love the concept, but the software is a mess. I would be so happy if they open-sourced the OS. Also it's much too quiet, I can't hear it ring or hear conversations unless it's on speaker. The lack of a camera is also disappointing. I pre-ordered th LP3, fingers crossed that it solves most of the previous iterations limitations.
This phone intrigues me, but it has no app store. I also wanted to get one of these for my mom because she's always on her phone and I even offered to pay for one for her, but she doesn't want one. Oh well.
Considering that the physical two-step shutter button for the camera is a big feature for the device, my favourite one of the promotional images for it is the girl taking a photo with the device *upside down* completely ignoring the shutter button🤣
I'm excited for it. I really want to get away from my smart phone. The only feature I wish it had was a way to listen to my audiobooks on it. Also, I really want to be able to view the pictures I take on the device. Having to wait until later to see if they even came out correctly would be terrible concept (for me)
I think a dumb phone should have text, talk, maps, music. Camera and maybe some connectivity to your watch health info should be the deluxe version. Maybe even for the camera u shouldnt be able to see it until you send it to your laptop forcing you to actually blow it up and see how crappy your resolution actually is in a larger screen.
Love the updates they made to Light Phone III but that price point is steep for what it is 😬 personally I feel like I can get the same benefits that Light Phone is offering with this phone by just majorly dumbing down my iPhone and have a better camera. But interested to see more reviews once it comes out
I agree. I think the biggest thing going for these dumb phones is literally not even having the ability to fall into media consumption because it’s literally not available. The price is steep, but I would be curious to know what the cost to make the phone is… if it’s truly made really well and will last 5-10 years, might make a lot of sense for someone looking for the whole life change.
I don't understand this. If it had an sdk it would just be another smart phone. Go make a smartphone app. What they do need is help making their existing apps better and squashing bugs.

I think my answer to the problem is to make my iPhone dumb by removing all these apps except the bare minimum stock apps and banking. No social and no streaming.
I watched the live stream that Jose Briones did with faces of the light phone company (Joe Hollier and Kaiwei Tang). They answered the question you had at 8:01 about viewing images on the device. They said that their goal is to let you to be able to see the photos in a sort of gallery way (like a typical smartphone). You will also be able to send photos via text message to friends and family.
I'm super interested. The only reason I haven't preordered yet is no word on RCS for messaging. Now that Apple's finally bending their knee later this year, RCS is simply where the tech is heading (at least state-side where there's not a culture of Whatsapp over SMS). I would love for the LP team to clarify it's implementation.
Was a Apple Genius right after college, I love the light phone 2. Really excited for the 3 and I preordered. You called it, our phones are attention whores. All of society is way too plugged in. This approach just respects the humanity deep with in me. You did a really great job nailing it. Which is phones going back to being a tool not a media mind grab. Cheers to the trailblazers. Also I view light phone as the OG of dumb phones personally or of dumb phones.
I am using light phone , and substitute all the other aspects of modern life to the max screen size/iPad use. I like not having to organize both device’s iPhone and iPad.. If I wanted to I could pair an Apple Watch to my wife’s iPhone. Once you detox and figure out the trade offs it’s kinda fun and just fine. You plan accordingly.
If there's one thing I'm sure of, it's that if they deliver on what they say this new version can do, it will 100% change the game when it comes to portable communication technology. If they could keep the price at $400, they'd have so much more adoption, and I'd be willing to bet if they left it at that price, they would start a whole new sector in phone tech that even some of the bigger companies will have to consider.

You are incorrect you do not need to use their phone plan ( you can if you like ) or it works with many carriers worldwide - it is unlocked and is a worldphone.
I would maybe get by with this as daily driver but more than anything I’m looking for a functional weekender phone to be more intentional during family time!

As an office worker not having email on my phone is actually a draw for me. Intentionally sitting down at my desk to look at work email, or breaking out the tablet on the couch at home, is fine. Worrying about the thing in my pocket all day is the problem. Anything with real time notifications throughout the day is absolutely a distraction and should not be on a minimalist phone.
next year, my girlfriend and I are spending our 5 year anniversary on a vacation, and I really want to make it special. I want to eliminate some of those small distractions such as picking up the phone to check notifications, checking the internet, and social media. I want it to be a truly in the moment trip. In that case, I think this would actually be a solid investment, however, the camera nuance is my largest problem. I am not so far as a photographer, but I am a photography enthusiast, so not being able to shoot photos that are quality with this device would kill its entire purpose for me. very very interested to see how this gets further explained and reviewed! Thanks brother! Totally a great idea and I also really get the photos issue… I think the quality and experience might actually be there. I’ve heard there is even a two stop shutter release one for focus and one for release like many cameras out today. I too am super interested in the quality of images.
You can get a faraday bag and store your phone. it will block off all the signal from your phone and give you distraction free experience with a fraction of the light phone price. The only reason I can think the light phone is a good idea is if you have trouble with doom scrolling and being offline. Congratulations on your anniversary, btw.

I hope they don't let you look at pictures on the phone cause that's one of the things that makes me addicted to my phone is looking through and organizing my pictures - I don't get sucked into my computer like I do my phone so I would much prefer to have to upload my pictures from the phone to my computer to look at them
Its all fun and games until you hear its 400$ (800 retail) and thats is just not worth even the 50% discounted price. Anything more than 200$ is way to much for any dumb phone. Solid advice is if you need a break from your phone that much just get a legit dumb phone for 20-30 bucks the only thing youre losing is the camera and thats debatable lol
