God bless you Mae and thanks for sharing. When I first found your channel in 2012 what stood out for me with you was that you mentioned God and you gave thanks to Him for the blessings in your life, which a lot people fail to do. I've never been envious of others, even as a child I was content with what I had and what my mom provided. My mom also taught us that jealousy is a sin and yet I still I understand exactly what you're saying. And for anyone else reading this I know jealousy and envy are not the words Dr. Mae used but these feelings can quickly trickle over when comparing yourself to others. At times I think everyone feels the "comparison bug" we all observe and take in things that others have that we don't have and we're going to do that and feel that way because we're human but it's important not to stay in those feelings. When I feel that way I quickly think about who I am in Christ Jesus and all the blessing he has done in my life to distract from any discouraging thoughts. But it is ironic for me hearing this message from you because as a viewer whenever I log on and check Twitter, FB, GG+ or YT it can be a bit overwhelming to see everyone doing so much in their life and I feel like I'm doing nothing, and when I say nothing I'm talking the career and financial areas. And I very well know that no one's life is perfect, the bible says trials and tribulations come upon us all but I see this and that going on from you guys(RU-vidrs)and it does appear that you and others online are doing very well, you're successful in your business', you've made certain goals happen, opportunities are coming, you travel, you're involved in exciting events that make a positive impact your community and then I think about myself, I have made no dents in my career with the talents that God has given me, no doors have opened for me and a lot of that is just the enemy wanting me to feel bad about myself, be less and unhappy. Mae, I don't have a lot at all...especially by man's standards but I have Jesus, so I'm able to remain in a positive state of mind, most of the time ^_^ and I have faith that God's plan for my life will be fulfilled, I don't think this is the end that I'm stuck in this rut forever, I have hope. God is good and I'm grateful for the life he has given me :) Thanks again for sharing your honest thoughts, it greatly appreciated. You caused me to share a thought that has been on my mind but I had no plans to openly share it, ah Mae you dragged it outta me lol!

Natural Chica Thank you so much for your vulnerability in this video! I really needed to hear everything you said. You are a beautiful woman and it is important to know that many women go through this process when reaching a crossroad. Don’t be too hard on yourself and take the time you need to figure things out. Hope you are doing well. A good book that helped me is “Outwitting the devil”. It’s a great read and it’s not what people might think the book is about. This seemed to happen with a lot of our "OG" RU-vidrs, as you all were caught in the shift from RU-vid being a new, organic outlet for real people to big business with the platform growing exponentially. Your story has a similar tone of Michelle Phan. I noticed a lot of our longtime RU-vidrs, such as African Export and several others that I can't think of their names but watched for years, left RU-vid I think due to similar reasons. But I can definitely see growth in you Mae! We all go through these transitions and thank you for sharing yours. Continue evolving and being the amazing woman that God has called you to be. We'll be watching out and rooting you on for those next steps. ❤️

When I graduated from grad school , it felt like part of me had died in a way. I was so used to striving to reach a goal outside of myself that I felt really lost when I no longer had that title to define (and basically guide) me. This video was so timely and thank you so much for sharing!

this happened to me after undergrad and I very well could've gone to grad school but I knew I would've been doing it out my perceived identity and not who I really was. I got into uni at 16 and I just really wanted life to stop and when it did, it was the craziest depression of my life but I couldn't keep doing things for a title or for everyone else.

I wish I could give you a hug! I've been feeling the same way lately. Social media really does make me feel inadequate and I hate comparing myself to other people but it's hard. I started watching your videos in my freshman year of college. When I saw your big chop I was so inspired that I decided to do the same. Everyone thought I was crazy. But watching your video helped me so much. Thanks for sharing and putting yourself out there. I learned a lot from your videos.

I am 53 and I am still trying to complete the "who am I" picture. it is an ever evolving journey that really never stops... you are in a "place" live the experience then it changes and you have to adjust. you really have little choice. I read the book, I pray a lot, enjoy the journey, forget the destination.

PLEAD THE BLOOD OF JESUS over you mind, body and spirit and have FAITH that he will guide you in the right direction in life. From What I'm Hearing from you you seem to have accomplished a lot at such a young age. You have your phd your married and a mother wow that's a BLESSING. This is so beautiful 😍. I'm legit crying because I'm trying to not let the labels I had growin up define me now. I was, and still am lol, an emotional person. But ppl would call me a cry baby. So when I became a teenager I became a brick wall and decided to hold all my emotions in. Which led me to be suicidal. And I was always very shy and introverted and I'm trying to break out of that and started my own RU-vid channel. And I only have two videos but I just talk about what I went thru and what all was going on in my mind. And in my life because no one in my family knew except my mom sisters and step dad. And my current boyfriend😍. But God bless you and your family. You have been such an influence in my life with helping me accept my natural beauty. You were the very first person I started watching on RU-vid. But hope you enjoy your growth in life. I always tell myself "Accept change. Whether good or bad. When change comes that means your reaching the next level in life."

The only way to have true peace and to know who you truly, are, is seeking a real, relationship with JESUS CHRIST!! It doesn't matter, how much we accomplish here, on this earth. If we don't have JESUS, IN OUR HEART AND PUT HIM FIRST OVER EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE WE WILL FAIL!! When we came in this world we were naked, when. We stand before GOD, we will be naked. JESUS, wants you to seek him and establish a relationship with him. Without a relationship with him we will never feel complete. May JESUS bless you. All the earthy things will soon pass away, the most important thing you can do now is truly seek JESUS CHRIST!! Your honesty is so genuine!! I think God is having you share your deepest feelings publicly because so many of us need to hear these topics discussed and not feel bad for getting trapped by them, but to recognize and pull away. Mae, I have to tell you that you were the first natural hair blogger I started following years ago. But it wasn't your beautiful hair that drew me to you... it was your beautiful spirit. Your realness and your authenticity has always shone through. As a matter of fact, I recently unfollowed most of the other hair bloggers I followed... not because they did anything wrong or it's not that I don't like them... I just started to realize that I need to be me and not compare me to others... and that my love of me was only going to come through following me and my own heart. I so appreciate you sharing your heart and this video only reaffirms to me that I am on the right spiritual path for myself. I am glad you are finding your way as well. I'm reading the same book. And I have read "the alchemist as well. I use to look at RU-vid videos and feel like I wasn't worthy. a few years back I was watching your video and I had to unsubscribe bc I compared myself to your growth u seem to have it all together; grad school, learning different languages, finding love and being so young ...everything I wish I was doing at that time I envied your drive and dedication it seemed like everything was going so well for you. I always felt like nothing ever went well for me. Even though I was happy for you I was sad (And cried even) for myself bc I was older and wasn't nearly close to your accomplishments. I had to get off RU-vid bc it made me depressed. Comparison is so common bc people tend to share their accomplishments and not their struggles. I feel like it's important to also share trials bc most people face the same doubts and fears . If we were more transparent we would see that we are more alike than we are different. Coming back here years later and watching this video is amazing bc everything really came in full circle. I am a better person and I love and approve of myself other people's life is theirs mine is enough. People look at other people's life and think they know what they're going through and think they have it all together. Thank you for sharing we are all in this to help each other and I am so happy for you I am also happy for myself yay #oneLove

I turned 31 this year and so much has changed because I wanted the life I'm always dreaming about. It's been so difficult because I had to give up things that I thought were security. The book The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho definitely is getting me through my journey. My favorite quote from The Alchemist, "Intensive, unexpected suffering passes more quickly than suffering that is apparently bearable; the latter goes on for years and without our noticing eats away at our soul, until one day we are no longer able too free ourselves from the bitterness and it stays with us for the rest of our lives." I have good days and a LOT of bad days. I totally get where you're coming from. It's hard to talk about because you're battling yourself and it's overwhelming thinking about what others may think about you, but you'll get through to finding yourself. I have so much fear as well but I just take it one day at a time. The last quote is touching! That quote reminded me of when my soul knew but in my head I wasn't ready. When I finally took the leap of faith internally I was soooo scared. I always remember that my journey will be tough and I have to understand it's that way so when I finally reach where I want to be, I'll humbly embrace and enjoy every moment of it and not take it for granted. I did not intend to comment on your vid, but girl, I woke up today feeling like should I continue to pursue my dreams?? Then I watched this vid and it touched me because you are me (lol I know corny) you REACHED my soul girl. And yay, you've read The Alchemist. (typing and watching) I'm gonna stop now...HAHA You got this, We got this, and anyone else who's reading this and struggling got this! New Subbie!

JK and Counting I'm 31 as well and at the age of 28 I moved back in with my parents, my car was repossesed around the same time, my one and only friendship (ouside of my immediate family) came to an end a couple years ago, and I have been through 3 different 11-12 month seasons of unemployment. All after receiving a Bachelor's in Chemistry/biology in 2009. These events had me searching for answers. In that quest I came across many new age books, including ones mentioned in this vid and in the comments section. But I only ended up even more confused, because I wasn't able to reconcile what they were saying with the word of God. This year, God led me to listen to Steven Bancarz's testimony here on youtube, and He began giving me a lot of dreams and simultaneously led me to the teachings of John Paul Jackson including his vid about The Law of Attraction (which you can find here on youtube as well). Thats when things began to make sense for me. I would encourage you to invest time in searching God's word for answers and listening to messages such as those from Elevation Church, One Church LA and taking your problems to God directly. Jesus is the only answer to the problems we face today unfortunately many people have begun to think that these other methods are superior to the path of a follower of Christ. As someone who has been there and done that, I can honestly say THEY ARE NOT. I pray God will till the soil of your heart to receive the pure and unadulterated word of God so that you can begin to see the changes you so desire in your life as I have. Today I am living in a new city in a really nice apartment with no roommate, I have been working for about a year making more money than I have before and well on my way to being promoted. All glory be to The Most High God!

I just graduated and I feel more confused now than ever before and my inner thoughts are constantly negative and I have to combat that everyday. God is good. LISTEN...I can really relate. I had a job paying almost 6 figures in Human Resources and I left because after 4yrs of trying to help people from tough situations in a major retailer (one of the top 2 retailers in the country) I was like I'm tired. I got a boss who was literally a microcosm of Trump and I was Sally Yates and I just couldn't sacrifice my integrity for a check. Now I'm SCARED out of my mind because I went to Ireland and decided I wanted to move to Europe. I want to go but I'm scared to leave but I HATE living in America at this point and I don't really want to get another HR job but money won't create itself so I have to do something. I either have to just go to Spain and give it a go. Stay and get a job and plan to go in 2019 (but then who wants to leave a steady job once you get one). Or go to Las Vegas with my mom if money gets too tight and I haven't found a job so I can at least move from where I'm at and not waste money hoping for a job and not getting it soon enough. CHOICE is the real thing to understand and FEAR is the real emotion to overcome. It's the fear in us which I do think it more pronounced in America that keeps us worrying about what we're going to do 'next'. America has done a GREAT job of making us feel anxiety over not having a title or prescribed purpose. It's hard in America because the whole system is set up on money NOT life balance. But that's again why I want to leave because I don't have any ties that I can't break so I feel like I need to just pull that trigger and do it and see what happens. It's hard to trust yourself because society says we shouldn't, that we need others to do it for us but the bottom line is we have to do it for ourselves.

I do not have a following on social media but I can completely relate to this. I would allow myself to get sucked into all these issues that everyone was commenting on and it's amazing how much you start to loose yourself and how much your own value system can become easily compromised if you're not careful. I've taken a break from all my accounts except for you tube. I've replaced all those platforms with a news app so I can still be aware of world events but more importantly I get to fully process the information myself without any opinions. Anyway, I'm glad you took that time for yourself.

Girrrrrrrllllllll............. I wasn't even gonna click on this at first because I feel like I am in a space where I'm over hair videos and I'm evolving as well. But when I read the title and saw the thumbnail I knew I just HAD to click on it and listen to what you had to say. I'm so GRATEFUL that I did!! Your words and emotions and spirit was like a breath of fresh air in this materialistic world!! I know of many people who are feeling like something is missing, and I feel that what we are searching for can be found in our vulnerability (a feeling that a lot of us don't like to feel). Mar ive been there before. Right after law school I started work, got married, and had a baby. I was co fused because suddenly I was in the unknown.there was no path to success like school provided. I became lost and confused. I started to pray and I decided to start doing those small things that used to make me smile and slowly I started to find my way which made me better in other areas. That did/does include time away from social media. Be encouraged as you encourage others. Love you girl sending prayers and positive vibes

I felt the same way, feeling a sense of a loss of control, wondering my purpose etc. The funny thing is, other people would look at you and feel like you have it all together! People would tell me that I am doing amazing things and I would go huh? But now I see that there is beauty in what we do and what we go through on this life journey. Hi Mae. First off I am so happy to see you in good health and your family is doing well in Mexico. In regards to losing ourselves in others and forgetting about ourselves and being down right tough on ourselves and unforgiving completely resonates with me. I am a mother of 3 adults practically and soon to be a divorcee. I'm in search of destiny that is inside of me even at my age. I've been reading T. D. Jakes Destiny and my favorite chapters so far are 6 and 10. There are so many layers to my story and I'm hoping to tell it one day. Thank you so much for blessing us with this video and message. This video is so amazing. I didn't realize I needed to hear this until I did. The Melody Beattie quote just cleansed my soul and allowed my tears to flow. Being that I just turned 39 on 6/16 I realized that I'm no where near where I thought I would be. I feel like I never finished things that I started. College, having a true intimate relationship with God, weight loss and a healthy lifestyle are things I started but I feel are left incomplete. This video helped me see that despite of my age, I really don't know what I want. It's funny because I know what I DON'T want. I guess I spend so much time focusing with the I don't wants and not with self reflecting with what I do want. This quote is my ah hah moment (I think Im spelling it right). Thank you for sharing this. I'm in my second year of grad school and one of the things I'm learning at 43 is to extend graciousness to myself the same as I would to others. I'm so friggin hard on myself and sometimes cruel even in how I deal with me! Ways and things I'd never do or say to another human being. So I say extend grace to yourself and be gentle as you're figuring it out.

So glad I had the chance to view this. There are peaks and valleys, life is such. But you are so right when you convey the importance of NOW. Control the controllable. I keep myself aware of the fact that is a plan for my life. And there is no room for worry if I have faith. There are offenders that work tirelessly to steal our joy, so we have to work just as hard to talk to those thoughts. They don't belong to us. God has not destined me to wallow in defeat. I know who I am Bc I have relationship with him and I know his promises do not come back void! The beautiful thing about growing older is the realization of value in waking up, connecting with people, seeing the smile on your love one's face and feeling the breath in your very own body! Its refreshing to see you making videos and sharing again. Like many others you were one of the one first few Natural hair channels that I subscribed to when I was transitioning...... I went through a period of depression, trying to figure out what my next steps would be and how I would get there ... which only made me sink further into a rabbit hole of sadness. feeling like there was no way out. I was not living in the moment at all.I was trapped by my own negative thoughts and fear of failing again. This year I am in a better space mentally and sometimes its a challenge but I fight it every day. I am also on a journey to figure out who I really am to ME and part of that journey means taking the time to give my natural hair some TLC and then you popped up In my suggestions I instantly lit up like one would when they see an old friend haha Welcome back Mae!!! Thanks so much for your transparency. I graduated college last year, and my life is FAR from what I thought it would be. I try not to compare myself to others, but it can be hard when you expected to be doing so much more. Hearing that someone else is struggling with finding contentment helps me know that I am normal and it'll be ok.

Wow. How you feel is what I'm going through in my life right. It started at the end of December. I felt the need to disconnect from Facebook and Instagram (and no I don't miss it at all.) I decided I wanted more authentic meaningful relationships than a bunch of "likes." I also wanted to live in the moment instead of living behind a camera lens. I enjoy my time with my family in a more genuine way then when I found the need to find the perfect angled shot to share on Facebook. Now I am in the phase of decluttering my home. I've gotten rid of so much stuff! Why did I have the need to accumulate so much stuff. It feels great to donate the books, clothes, shoes, etc that were collecting dust. I realized I am happier with less. I treasure the value and not the quantities of people, objects, etc. I also realize that TIME is one of the most precious commodities I own and I have to spend it wisely and with those I love.

This is an amazing, amazing "prophetic WORD" -- I am so there. Not really appropriate for social media, but it's why I do what "I DO" in leaving my truth. A Holistic Peace followed this -- #There is nothing like living your truth! I struggle with social media and thus, I decided that I didn't want to struggle - so I tap into those areas that empower my strength. An awesome video.

I totally get this. Being in my forties I never thought I would be praying for "real friends". I am kinda ass backwards in society's terms. I finished school (BS, MBA, PhD), have a son who is 25 and a I am a grandmother of two ..traveled the world blah blah blah all by the time I was 40 ( ok 41). But I lived my life so much for my kid.. to attain degrees ...to have that perfect career to survive in the way I wanted to ..to "prove" people wrong that I wouldnt be a "statistic". but even after attaining all of that my drive is supper low. looking at what others who "appear" to have it made you will feel like you are NOT living up to what is considered "success"" but your success can only be dictated by you. I totally shut that outside movement to focus on me. Right now I could literally move to a tiny house in the wilderness or an island where I can truly get into me. I left social media (i.e FB, IG, never did twitter and I even left LinkedIn) in 2012 I dont feel like I have missed anything, I have learned when I travel when I am invloved in a some activity I will not film or have 1,000 pictures to show for it. My company in which i work the theme is BE HERE NOW and I am really trying to grasp that and enjoy the life I have. Time is not flying by we are just so consumed with all the crap that goes on we dont cherish the time. Best wishes with you and your journey. Finding a great kinship is sooooo hard and I think it is harder when you get older where you are not in the circles of the norm when you are younger. Peace!

There is no way she could really not feel like a huge success. Wow you have such an accomplishment life and your insight was good. It made me think and love the theme, Be Here Now. I live so much in the future I rarely focus on the present. Great reminder. If you dont mind me asking-How did you find your kinship group? I always wonder how that happens or what that looks like..

You are so much more accomplished than most people both younger and older than you. There comes a time in life when we have to sit down and ask God what's the purpose of it all. "Unless the Lord builds the house they labor in vain that build it". You may find that God will lead you to a path that is totally unlike anything you've ever imagined and it usually involves giving your time or talent to His purpose and helping others in need. That's where true fulfillment come from. Getting quiet inside, fasting, and prayer and just listening reveals so many unanswered questions about ones destiny. A lot of times these emotional turbulences is Gods way of getting our attention and rerouting us to his will.

@NaturalChica I know EXACTLY where you are! I was/am there as well. It really hard to lose who your are and then have to battle the guilt in not "enjoying" your success. Im also in the process of "evolving". Married with children.....and there is not road map or class. I had to DECIDE to build a village. Sometimes the next step is acknowledging that you need the space and time to breath and re-establish stability in YOURSELF. There is not shame. No one tell us as black woman what to expect or the landmines that waits us.

I do this myself and i didn't get like this until i hit 30.I'm 35 now and i still have times when i get confused about life in general.You may be suffering from depression also.Mines come and goes.You are so beautiful and vibrant! You have such a beautiful spirit.Mae i have a very similar personality as you.We are always taking care our family and making sure everyone is happy but then we look around and wonder who is going to check on me? People be thinking I'm so happy because i smile alot but they don't understand we carry alot of pain behind the smiles sometimes.

That's why I don't like social media. I think it's a beautiful platform but also dangerous. I like my privacy and space. I definitely understand where your coming from. I've never been a fan of titles. Like you said they fade away. It's like followers on IG, I never knew why people get caught up in that because it doesn't mean anything to me. I'm glad your back.

His word says His grace is sufficient for you and me and His strength is made perfect in our weakness. He has begun a good work in you and me and can be trusted to complete it. Mae! I have been wondering where you've been, but also noticed the major changes in your life (mexico, baby, wedding, phd). Good for you for being tuned in enough to take a step back and work on you. I have been seeing your journey through yoga and started following your channel way back when from big chop to now. You motivated me to do my own hair channel. I loved the transparency of the video and looking forward to whatever you wish to share. As far as ideas, maybe you can talk about motherhood, what you are learning from your experiences in moving to a new country, marriage, you dont have to get too personal, though. Such an open, honest, soul releasing and relatable video. A couple of years ago I saw you with your family in a Target in St. Augustine, Florida. I didn't say anything because you were vacationing with family and like you stated you need your time. I can tell this video was extremely emotional and cathartic for you. You are me, I am there. I totally understand where you are coming from with the feeling of "what's next" and "what about me". It breaks you down but I am looking forward to the pick up being indescribably amazing. I can relate to everything you've stated in this video. I've recently felt the need to just detox away from a lot and time to heal all the way along with restoring the precious jewels within myself. The beginning of last year, I had met so many people that I didn't realize how good it felt to meet them all at once and being around them altogether. As time went by, I realized that some of them were really taking advantage of me- for simple things such as who I hang around, thinking that I wouldn't realize it until I realized how much of my energy was draining from them & that gut instinct feeling that I shouldn't continue being around them. Once I noticed that it was the universe's way of telling me to get rid of all the low frequencies around me, my vibrations raised higher than ever. Being that I'm 21, still young, developing and growing in to the person I'm meant to become, I've learned that its only a phase in life and shouldn't be around people who make me feel less about myself, don't see my worth or place negative labels on me. Comparison has been something that I've dealt with for the longest & hurts a lot to get that feeling. I'd feel down upon myself bc I'd see some of my friends receive modeling opportunities including traveling while I'll be forever wondering when my moment will come. Now, I'm doing 2 shows in July, working with some photographers I know, working with some of my friend's clothing lines, and traveling. It feels good to embrace how phenomenal you are as a person, beautiful, and working on your growth journey. Reading daily affirmations and having high self confidence & loving yourself to the fullest is very important to always have. Thank you for making this video! ☺💕

After grad school, I went through the same exact thing. I was so hard on myself trying to be who everyone else expected me to be, intelligent and always doing the right thing. You lose yourself doing that. Growth is about finding yourself. I'm not a blogger or anything but the pressure and confusion happens. Your honesty has helped so much. Hey Mae, I am so happy I choose this video to listen to first thing in the morning. You are not alone! I struggle constantly with this comparison game and while I tell myself not to do it, sometimes it cannot be helped. I have had to take a step back just to prevent it. I know I am blessed and that my journey may be different from Bob, Salley, and Joe but still sometimes we need a reminder. This was such a great video Mae and I'm glad you decided to post it! I feel the same way and that's the exact reason why I deleted all of my social media accounts and just kept my channel bc I love sharing my tips and helping people but as far as social media I was tired of feeling like I wasn't enough and comparing myself to others wasn't healthy! This was such an emotional video bc today's society do post facades on their social media as if they have everything together but in reality they don't have it all together and most of those people are depressed and miserable so we can't feel like we aren't enough bc we are enough! We are blessed to be in good health and alive bc life is short and that's why I chose to delete my social media bc I want to live in the present moment instead of trying to figure out what picture is good enough to post on Instagram and what app to use to make the picture look better and allow the number of likes to make you feel down, it's not worth it! I feel like living in the present moment has been such a breath of fresh air for me and I don't miss social media at all! Stay strong and continue to pray and ask God to give you strength to get pass those feelings bc you are awesome and you have done some amazing things in your life and we (your supporters) love you and are here for you! Testify Mae. Firstly thank you for sharing and lighting up my night with your beautiful face, voice and soul. You definitely resonated with me as someone in their 30's going through a transition. I know what it's like to be successful, to fail, to be depressed and to persevere and you hit the nail on the head. It's not about the titles my ego craves, it's about being present. I limit my time on Instagram because it gives me anxiety and awakens my comparison monster. One of my friends who is a published writer and artist that travels the world and has thousands of followers. I decided to compliment her on something I saw on her Instagram and she's like girl I'm just fronting. That's for publicity, my life is not that great. And that affirmed what I already know, nobody has their ish together, nobody and that's OK. The power of being present is celebrating where we are at this moment. So as much as my ego's jealousy wants to rear it's ugly head when I look at my friend's pics, I choose to be grateful and genuinely celebrate her for where she is in this moment then I barter with myself to do the same. Here's to not knowing and the journey that lies ahead.

Port Novella I was happy to know that social media is a facade for the lives we are trying to live and not the lives we are actually living which is much deeper than that. You're missing the point if you think external things like degrees and hair bring you happiness. It's discovering who you are which is why I celebrate my friend's journey by talking to her outside of social media and taking time to focus on myself. Btw happiness is not a fixed thing or a permanent state. It's a continuum and on the spectrum I will always be fluctuating and that's OK. The goal is not to be happy all the time because that's inauthentic. The goal is to live in the now. Now I switch off. Have a good day.
