Very cool to see the process of designing the cut and see it through to fruition. It made quite the sparkly stone, very pretty. Do you have more designs in the works? I am tempted to try the cut, would you say it brightens a stone? Maybe it would be good to boost a dark garnet (seems like I recall the RI being fairly close), if I don't have YAG hanging around? Thanks for sharing!
Since I only cut it in YAG I can't say how it will perform on other stones, but I compared it to another cut YAG and it didn't look any brighter. I made a square design specifically to try and brighten the green CTH:YAG and it turned out okay, but I think it needs some tweaking still.
Nice to see you Dr. Donahue, I have been enjoying the rock hounding community for the last couple of years. I recently noticed you on Kyle’s website. I have been enjoying some of your videos. I am enjoying this video but I will need to watch it tomorrow to finish it. I will need to take another view of your site or get a stone you put on Kyle’s. I often think of doing this fun stuff but I have found I am turning 70 this year and losing my eyesight to macular degeneration. So I will just watch! Thanks
Thanks for watching, Vicky. There's an old saying in the faceting world, where the worse your eyes get, the better your polish looks! But seriously, sorry to hear that. Getting old sucks, I can sometimes feel it in my fingers after too long at the machine. Take care!
That was a lot more interesting than I thought it was going to be! And what a beautiful, sparkly stone! I know you have an idea when it comes to designing your own stones, but that was the most confusing part for me, and I have a 20+ year optical background! And it still lost me! I'm going to have to rewatch the beginning again, and pay more attention this time. But the whole process is fascinating. I was going to try faceting but with only one hand, I don't think I can do it. But the more I watch it, the more I absorb the knowledge and that is the important part for me! Understanding the theory of light and knowing the material you are cutting is the key! Thanks for this! I love the voice over, and the baby breaks! You daughter is so cute! And I'm getting in some material that I may want cut. If it's good enough to facet. We will see. And I went to your Etsy store to get the aquamarine square cut and the two trillions and they were gone! I'm glad that I got the one sunstone from you! I am still thinking of that gorgeous trillion too but I know I can't afford it right now! So I liked the video and I'm going to rewatch the beginning to understand how you create a cut with the material you have. That cut is really gorgeous in that material! Thanks Patrick!
Thanks for the comments, Lisa! I should do a more focused design video. This one I was flying by the seat of my pants, trying to justify my random decisions later, to show you can design a stone relatively quickly once you learn the basics. The small aqua and a few other inexpensive stones I sent to Kyle to sell as part of his artisan corner sales. I think one of them sold.
You can download the program and try it free for thirty days with full functionality, and then after that it's $99 for an activation license that does not expire (I think you can use the license on multiple computers).
How to contact you Patrick for Fixing chipped stones and removing surface inclusions ect.. ? Is that something you have done before repairs and re-cuts?
Thank you for posting the step by step. I was wondering when you cut each angle on pavilion or the crown, how do you know you have cut enough? there could be 16 pavillion cuts but then how do you know when to stop? or do you do an outline cut first?
Almost every diagram I use is designed as a meetpoint cut. That means you cut the facets until they reach a certain mark, like the girdle or the intersection of two other facets.
I don't understand sir i used 600 next cooper with 3000 P or 600 next 1200 grid toper and cooper 3000 with POLYCRYSTALLINE, thx have a nice day. My english so bad i don't understand u:)))
